2nd XI Review 1999

I suppose this season was a great success, but a little frustrating, especially for Chris and myself. Knowing from the first fixture last season's selection was always going to be tricky, with seven new players to watch at indoor nets back in February. Richard and myself weren't surprised to see an abundance of names available again for the first five or six matches with many others standing in the wings so to speak.

With my inability to win the toss and most of the opposition electing to hat, this left the season short of attacking scores in which to show our full batting capabilities. When we actually run hat the opposition wickets were a little softer than first appeared and caused the team problems Oakham for example. With strength in depth and a talented howling line up we were able to claw ourselves out of trouble. i.e. Sleaford 96 all out Oakham 82 all out in the 54th over.

With Chris still at university Giles Goddard stepped in to cover as vice captain and didn't disgrace himself when in charge, a good win at newly promoted Branston and against Heckington, showed a more then capable substitute.

Division one seemed to he the tougher of the two leagues, with probably both fixtures against Moulton Harrox the finest matches to he played all season, with over 910 runs scored and one win apiece in the two matches. This should give an idea of the standard of cricket the seconds must face this coming season. Second place seemed to he all we were worth hut to miss out by the odd point possibly disappointing after a late rally at Spalding and Holbeach.

Premier A started off with seven wins on the trot, win number eight had to wait after a low scoring but battling defeat to local rivals Boston C.C. With this defeat Long Sutton and Market Deeping were bound to be on the receiving end, Sleaford only losing one wicket and scoring 360 runs from both fixtures. Our fourth Premier 'A' title and fifth trophy in four seasons was accomplished with style with at least three games to go and 13% ahead of second place. Way to go boys! Again many names and faces stand out for their achievements Luke, Adi, Trevor, Edward, Graham and Giles but keep your eyes open for the likes of J. Smith, D. Gollop, I. Wallis, j. Miles and D. Spearman.

What next for the second eleven in the new improved league, with the first eleven moving in to the new Lincolnshire League the second eleven will he playing in the top two divisions of the South Lincs. League.
