Marine Research : news    (updated 1 Dec 99)

recordings press/radio/tv our other bands

Almost at the end of 1999, and the fast-moving world of Marine Research is beginning to slow down a bit. After a couple of last gigs in December, we will be going into hiding to work on a new album. This could be a slow process, since we want to make the next album really good. It means we won't have too much news for you for a few months. But then, hopefully, we will be back, back, back!

Marine Research : recordings

Robert Llewellyn listens to the Research Our first album, Sounds from the Gulf Stream has now been out for a while (on K/Elefant/Flavour of Sound). For details of what's included on the album, plus how to get hold of a copy, press the nose of the eager listener on the right (listening to the album at a listening post in the Virgin Megastore, Oxford Street, London) or click here.

We still have a few postcards to promote the album, with a photo of us on the front, so if anyone would like one or two of these, just email us.

We will soon start work on a new album for your future delectation. Any inspirational ideas for songs would be very welcome.

Marine Research : press/radio/tv

by Annabel Wright The best thing that's happened recently press-wise was having our picture painted for the New Yorker (as shown on the right). The picture is by Annabel Wright (aka Aggi from the Pastels) and we like it a lot. An honour.

If anyone wants to know what its like talking to Marine Research when they are drunk, seek out Shredding Paper fanzine. It contains a long and highly drivelsome interview with Amelia, Cathy and Peter. They think it is very entertaining. Others are not so sure.

More generally, we seem to be doing really well press-wise, and our press page is getting pretty full. We are sure there are still gaps, though, so if you spot anything that is missing, do let us know, and we'll add it.

On the radio front, we are apparently supposed to be embarrassing ourselves by taking part in an indie carol concert on Wednesday 8th December. This is being organised for the John Peel show on BBC Radio One (97-99FM), which runs from 10pm-midnight. You can hear this via the Radio One website if you like, but we cannot guarantee the quality of our performances.

Every year, John Peel also does a 'Festive 50' on his programmes, which is a chart based on votes from his listeners. If you would like to vote in the John Peel Festive 50 for this year, email your 3 favourite tracks of 1999, and your 3 favourite tracks of this century, to john.peel@bbc.co.uk. (See what we voted for).

On the TV front, on our short trip to Spain in November, we recorded two TV programmes for Spanish TV. We don't yet have details of the broadcast dates, but we'll post details here when we get them (and also send out a mailing to Spanish members of our email news list).

The video for Parallel horizontal also continues to get played on various TV stations, most recently on Swedish TV. The video was created by our friend Giles Borg (Lo-fi productions) and is - as usual with Giles's vids - a little bit odd, but also good. You can also see it (if you have the necessary technology) on the Southern Marine Research site, alongside the video for Queen B. You can also see an excellent short film by Giles called "The Spaceman" at the excellent MediaTrip website.

Marine Research : our other bands

Finally, despite the fact that Marine Research are fairly busy at the moment, several of the band are finding time to do other music too.
