Why me......How could I have possibly got this?

Every time I ask my consultant, 'how could I have possibly got this?', it's always the same answer, 'It's very difficult to say' , which I ultimately have to agree with him.

Although I could beat myself up trying to establish how and why I got this, after reading on the subject and analysing my lifestyle prior to the cancer striking, the following is purely my simple interpretation on how I possibly could have got this cancer.

Lets start with some scientific, medical facts......

Extract from the Cancergroup website:- Cells in the throat are subjected to lots of injury from heat and abrasion, and thus must divide frequently to replace those lost due to injury and old age. Normally, cells divide quickly as we develop in the womb and through infancy, and then the rate slows down considerably, just to replace cells that die. The division of cells in the throat and elsewhere is under very tight control, regulated by the genes within the cells. Cancer starts in a single, abnormal cell unable to control it's division processes. When this control is lost, the cell may start to divide in a haphazard, uncontrolled manner, creating many similar altered cells, and grow to form a swelling of abnormal cells, called a "tumor".

I have highlighted the section of text, which is a key statement and will come back to later.

Potentially Contributing Factors:

Conclusion:

Basically, I feel, a combination of a number or all of the factors above, contributed to the cancer starting. The cells in the throat are tightly managed and with all the issues I had at the time, with the headcold, regular travel (air conditioning), working long hours, throwing 'abrasive' alcohol based medicines and drinks down my throat, the throat cells didn't, in my opinion have a chance and something had to give. In my opinion, it was basically a lifestyle cancer, 'wear and tear on a weak throat' which on hindsight, I could have reduced the chances of it starting if I was a bit more careful and took stock of my current lifestyle and made some changes.

At the end of the day, who really knows how I got it, it happened, and I am not beating myself up about it and I have made some lifestyle changes now which should now help speed up the healing process and help me get cured. One day science should provide us with greater proof and knowledge on how these cancer's start and until them we should all be aware of what we are doing to our bodies and not get too complacent as the body is not as strong as some of us believe it to be..
