What is not generally known is that Wainwright had kept a journal recording the journey from Ilala to the coast.  This was lost but a German translation survives.  Roy Bridges has translated the journal back into English and produced a fully-annotated version now printed in a Hakluyt Society volume – Four Travel Journals  published for the Society by Ashgate in 2007.
