DEUTSCHE REICHSBAHN (DR)
FROM WEST TO EAST
5 MAY TO 10 MAY 1991
This DVD lasts just over the
hour with excellent film quality and stereo sound, and features
the railways of the former West Germany, and East Germany (where
time seems to have stood still), in 1991 prior to their
amalgamation and the German railway network much the same as it
was before re-unification.
On 5 May we arrive at Aachen and
see SNCB 1608 and DB110 448 and at Herzogenrath see two newly
painted 215s running round their coal train.
On 6 May we have a depot visit
to Dortmund 1 (the home of the class 110s) where we see some DR
143s recently transferred. The depot is very full of locos and
there is much activity with locos being moved to and fro on and
off the traversers inside and out.
Our next location is Nordhausen,
the terminus for the Harzquerbahn and the junction for Halle,
Erfurt and the recently re-opened line to Northeim.
At Nordhausen Hbf (before
electrification and still using manual signal boxes and
semaphores) there is much activity. We see passenger and freights
hauled by 132s to and from Halle and Erfurt, and DB 216s (with
steam heat) to and from Northeim. There are also plenty of
shunting movements with classes 106, 112 and 114. In the yards
stands 132s and a train full of Russian army vehicles awaiting
movement back home.
At Nordhausen Nord bf 99 7236
departs with its train to Eisfeld Talmuehle and Hasselfelde. 99
7245 arrives with its train and we then follow the loco on the Bw.
We see it watered and put away. and view the coaling plant and
turntable. We also visit the two road Bw.
We go to the road bridge over
the railway and view the Bw and the activity in and out of the Hbf
and the Nord Bw.
We see 99 7245 return to the bf
over the level crossing. 99 7246 is seen arriving and goes on
shed. From the signal box we see 99 7245 departing. We visit the
signal box. After another visit to the bridge, we see 99 7246
depart. Stored rollend wagons can be seen.
Outside in the banhofplatz a
tram is seen with people going about their daily business. We have
a piece of luck! A railwayman tells us of two dampf locos dumped
behind the shed. We get permission from a nice man who allows us
through his allotment to view them and see 442397 and 441378
dumped. We also see trains passing by on the line to Erfurt.
On 7 May we visit Ellrich, a bf
in the former East, on the line between Nordhausen and Welkenreid.
Here we view the Bf area and note that it is being refurbished. We
can also see a large amount of containers and watchtowers around
the Bf. DB 216 176 arrives with a train to Nordhausen from
Northeim. We see the zug personnel change over and then the train
depart.
Our final visit is to
Halberstadt Hbf. Halberstadt radiates lines to Ilsenburg, Halle,
Blankenburg, Osterwieck and Thale. Here we see passenger trains
hauled by classes 132, 112 and 110.
