Paraguayan international defender is known as "the man in the middle at the back." In other words he is a sweeper? Well , more than a sweeper,he's a defender, a coordinator, an organizer and a playmaker all rolled into one. He signed for his latest club Atletico Madrid from Corinthians for a reported £4 million last year. Played all four games at France '98 without committing a foul and was voted a member of FIFA's All-Star squad there. Voted the best player of 1998 Brazilian championship. Gamarra is rated as one of the best defenders from South America, but with his current team Athletico struggling in the Spanish league, having conceded 14 goals in the first 8 games. It is believed that Atletico coach Claudio Ranieri is after fresh defenders to plug his leaky defence. Former Mallorca defender Elena Marcelino, now at Newcastle United is said to be unhappy with life in England and it is believed that the £5.5 million rated defender could be involved in a swap deal between Newcastle United and Athletico.
