Newcastle United's Stars of the new millennium

Michael Chopra

Question , Why is it that Asians are useless at football?

Answer . As soon as they get a corner they build a shop on it.

Ok so it's an old joke and probably considered politically incorrect in this day and age. In this case though that old joke seems quite appropriate. to dater there has never been an Asian player in the English Premier league. Indeed if you talk about Indians and Pakistani's in England, corner shops and take away restaurants spring to mind. When it comes to sport they all play cricket, Don't they?

No Corner Chopra for Michael.Well they did but things are changing and changing fast. At the recent youth tournament in Wembley a new English star was born. His name Michael Chopra. He is the 15 year old son of a Gateshead corner shop owner ,Minty Chopra, and there seems little likelihood that he will be following in his fathers footsteps into the family business for he has his sights set on the big time.

Michael and Minty have been going to Newcastle matches for as long as they can remember, they are part of the toon army's loyal fans and Michael has his heart set on following his hero Alan Shearer onto the hallowed turf of St James' park. He goes to the same Gosforth high school as Alan Shearer did. He wears the same number nine shirt that Alan wore for the school team. He already plays for the Newcastle youth team and unlike Alan Shearer it seems unlikely that they will try him in goal then let him join Southampton, which was the case with Shearer. England star of the future. His goalscoring talents have already been recognised and he hopes to take a step up to the full team when he leaves school. He has made a big impression in football circles, whilst playing against Scarborough he scored Seven goals in that game and also managed NINE in a 16-0 win for his local boys club.

These goal scoring skills did not go unnoticed and he was asked to represent England at the recent International schoolboys tournament at Wembley. He was one of the stars of the recent tournament scoring 4 goals in the tournament This included 2 against China, one against France and a winning goal in the last minute of the FINAL against the Argies . He was voted the man of the match. Will this young man be the next Alan Shearer or the first Michael Chopra? I'll keep you posted on his progress.
