Just when you thought it was Summer again

Your ace reporting team of Softie, Steph, John(Mr Steph) and my good (will you accept indifferent?) self all sallied forth (or was it fifth) to Kingston Park to see the match vs Everton. Our first major shock was the weather which was unusually cleme nt for the first half of the game but this was illusory and the end of the match was greeted with much wailing and chattering of teeth as the thermometer sank to the more customary levels that we grew to know and hate last season.
The match was totally dominated by Newcastle for almost the entire 90 minutes. Everton had a brief period towards the end when they matched us and mounted a few attacks but the balance of play was heavily with the home side. The Resorves looked quite impressive, stringing together a number of good passing moves, getting good crosses into the box and raining in shots on the Everton goal which struck bodies on the line many times or the woodwork. We slaughtered them 0-3. Is this club completely jinxed? Everton mounted 3 attacks in the first half resulting in 2 goals and a save from Perez. Both goals were appalling errors in midfield, one a poor pass back, the other was Rob Lee being robbed in midfield and Cadamarteri being put clean through as a result. A lady stood next to us put into words what has been on my mind for many years now. "Someone up there doesn't like us" she sighed.
The team was :- Perez; Arnison, Steve Caldwell, Gary Caldwell, Griffin; Green, McClenn, Lee, Kerr; Robinson, McMahon (sub Coppinger during 2nd half) There were some great crosses from Arnison, Griffin, Kerr and Robinson. In fact a game in The Resorves might just restore some of Al's joie de vivre. Then again - perhaps not. I wish the first teamers could cross as well as this though. There were so me great creative midfield touches from McClenn and Stuart Green (who we had not seen before), although there was inconsistency and they are not yet the finished article. At the back, Steve Caldwell looks tall, strong and impressive but had his hands full dealing with Cadamarteri. He looked to me like a defender who can make the grade but there is work to be done. Sometimes I found him overcommited in challenges and although the 2 goals were the result of midfield errors, Caldwell was guilty of letting Cadamarteri get away from him. McMahon seemed fairly anonymous. He's a big lad and I'd have expected him to be on the end of some of those crosses but he seemed to be awol for large periods. Robinson was very busy, very hardworking, got a di sallowed goal and worryingly, missed a hatful of chances as well. Might well make the grade if his finishing is normally better than this. So there you have it. An extraordinary game - completely one sided and a ludicrous result, but you don't get points for possesion or shots on goal. You only get points for goals and only Everton scored any with a remarkable economy of effort. The ultimate kick in the teeth came as we left KP. The PA was blasting out a song which went, "In the beginning, When we were winning" The story of the season so far eh? (-; How long can Newcastle go without winning a match at first or second team level? Will any of these resorve players become Premier superstars? Was Keegan right all along in scrapping the resorves? Can Softie, Jonno and Steph survive another Winter in the appalling conditions at Kingston Park? Who could ever have imagined that Perez is a goalkeeper? Will any of these questions ever be answered in the next exciting episode of "THE RESORVES" (to be continued - ad infinitum I'm afraid)
