Newcastle United EIGHT ... the other lot NIL

Where were you when we were great?

It's the first time in ions that I have either not been at the match, been watching it on TV or as a last resort got live commentary from Metro radio.

The thing is , a couple of weeks ago I asked my son what he wanted to do on his seventh birthday. A party at our house? Bouncy castle on the lawn? Soft play area in a Pub?

"No dad I want to go to Flamingo land." was the reply.

Ah well that will be Ok thought I , Newcastle playing on the 18th according to my Daily Star fixtures list wallchart dated June 25th, his birthday on the 19th. Only thing is I forgot about Europe and the fact that there are no more Saturday games at home this year.

Last week when I realised, it was too late, I couldn't disappoint him. I can always get a tranny and an ear piece to take with me. As long as I wear my lucky clothes It would be OK.

So today, I got kitted out in Toon army dodgy away shirt , Toon coat plus tatty Toon shoes, along with lucky B/ W telly tubby socks . Before we set off , I nipped down to this little electrical shop that's open all hours to me and nicked a radio / batteries and set of headphones.(those who know me will know what I mean when I say ) I got to Flamingo land, put in the headphones only to find that they didn't damn well work. Indeed the volume control was dodgy as well, it was either full on or full off. Bollocks... Oh and I forgot to mention that the radio was a novelty Coca Cola tin. I don't know why I picked it, I just did.. Any way I had a smashing day on all the rides with my bairns, I would just like to point out the reason that I lost on the go carts to a seven year old is that the car was defective, and I wasn't really scared to go on the bullet, the queue was too long.

OK 3 o'clock approaches and I get myself nicely positioned just outside one of the pubs. Luckily there is a ride with a " 30 minute waiting from this sign" board nearby and the queue is well past that. hehehehee, "get yersells in the queue lads, I'll wait here for you," was my message to the boys.

A bit of tuning with my ear up to this coke tin got a few strange looks , but I'm used to funny looks off people. Eventually I get Radio Five live or was it talk radio, The ******* aren't doing a live commentary its a "and over to St James' for the latest..".. type of thing. DOUBLE BOLLOCKS, Well what a start ..... what a game..... what the hell was I doing 100 miles away.

By half time the volume was full blast ,"proud to be a geordie" was going through my mind "wish I was there" was another, as I walked through the park with a huge grin on my face .

The second half was spent walking a bit of a distance from the rest of the family who for some strange reason didn't want to be associated with a geek with a Coke tin next to is ear , shouting "YESSSSSSSS" every 10 minutes. Leeds fans kept coming up and saying "wats the scer?" talking about their game with the smoggies. As if I was interested . "EIGHT NIL" was my reply, "TO NEWCASTLE....".

Eight nil, what a score, wish I'd been there. Now it looks like I will have to spend every game at Flamingo land with my family, for it is obvious to me that that I was the reason for the toons success today. I have stumbled upon a new superstition lads and lasses , and this one works.

We are on the bottom step of the stairway to heaven.....
