Bobby Robson was today welcomed at St James' park by hundreds of Newcastle fans, and dozens of journalists. On his appointment he said " I thought Barcelona was big - this has pipped it . I am proud and honored and thrilled, its great to be back" he went on to say "I realise I have a massive job ahead of me. It is a great challenge. I am up for it. I am not afraid of it, I don't underestimate it, I'd like to thank all of the fans for their support , especially Rik and his friends for all the encouragement and for putting a good word in for me to the board of the directors. I am going to enjoy working here. the priority is to bring about a change of fortune, stabalise the club and ensure that premiership status is maintained and that we have made progress. There is no panic. It is retrievable and I am confident that I can do it" He will be paid around a million pounds to keep Newcastle United in the premier league. He has only got a 9 month contract but this will be renewed in May as long as Newcastle United are showing signs of improvement. Bobby Robson will have limited funds this season, It is not expected that he will be delving into the transfer market for a few months as he says he wants to assess all the players at the club and give them all the chance to show him that they are good enough. Every one will start with a clean sheet and that includes Alex Pistone, Lionel Perez and Derrick Hamilton along with the technical staff that work with him. Steve Clarke will for now remain as assistant, and Shearer will remain as captain. Bobby Robson profile page here later.... Bobby Robson has been appointed as the next manager of Newcastle United . They have also taken the extraordinary step of advertising the assistant managers job in the local job shop. I have decided to go for the job and picked up an application form. All applicants will be voted for by season ticket holders at the next home game. Here is my manifesto. If I am elected I will satisfy the demands of the fans, the players and the shareholders. I will bring you exactly what you want, for if I am elected I will do the following. As I may not be the best tactician around I will leave the coaching and tactics to Mr Robson, although I recommend that he will employ the services of Peter Beardsley,(as attacking coach) Chris Waddle (midfield coach) and Stu pearce,(defensive coach). that should sort the team out. I will be concentrating on using my vast knowledge and judgement of players to bring in the most useful players to Newcastle, at an affordable price. Whilst continuing to produce home grown talent one or two initial changes will have to be made. Firstly I will raise funds by selling Silvio Maric and Nick the Greek to Sunderland. This will also ensure that they are relegated, I will swap back Gary Speed and Duncan Ferguson to Everton , I reckon I will be able to manage a Francis Jeffers and a Don Hutchinson as replacements. Next up I will offer a swap deal with Blackburn . Matt Jansen, Keith Gillespie and £5 million for Alan Shearer. Pistone, Hamilton and Serrant will be offered on a buy 2 get one free basis. That should give us a considerable amount of money with which the directors will be able to buy themselves another leer jet and a lifetimes membership of Estelle's massage parlour in Amsterdam. That should keep them happy and out of the way while I continue my transformation. now for the fans. To start with , I will offer a free Adidas raincoat to everyone who doesn't have a roof over there heads this season. I will reduce the price of Food and Ale within St James' park by 30%. I will increase the staff within the food / drink outlets at St James park so that no one has to wait more than 2 minutes to be served. Platinum club members will get their own lap dancer, and we will all have live entertainment by top bands provided both before and after the game free of charge. Players will be ordered to spend 15 minutes at the end of each game talking to the fans and signing autographs for the kids. These same players will get a hefty win bonus if they win, however if they lose then non of them will be paid a penny. If they do win a major trophy i will arrange for a weeks holiday for those players that have played the best, accompanied by a group of page 3 models to a Caribbean island. Those that don't perform , I will arrange a transfer to the MaKems. Back to the fans, and the new stand. Next year we will have 14,000 extra seats. All of the current Milburn stand ticket holders will be moved to the back of the new stand, for i will be creating an all singing stand . Those prepared to sing their hearts out for the lads will be given the best seats in the house as they in my opinion are the best fans. So..... Vote for me.... You know it makes sense. |

John Gregory seems to have thrown his hat into the ring as a likely candidate for the Newcastle United's job. Why ? Why would a man who has taken a struggling premiership team and transformed them into a respected top side, want to quit? some believe that deadly Doug Ellis doesn't want to spend the necessary millions to take Villa all the way to the top, and he is happy the way things are. Gregory wants to challenge for the title, but has been blocked from going for certain players by Ellis. He doesn't have a long record like Bobby Robson, but looking at his achievements with Villa I think he may be a worthy contender. When I first heard his name mentioned I thought , no chance, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea. He has just about all the right qualities to please all parties. He is British , which will go down well with the fans who see foreigners as not always as committed as their British counterpart. 2 He has passion, deep down the thing we loved most about Keegan was his passion , Gregory certainly has that. 3 He has the players on his side, Other than Collymore al the players at Villa seem to like him and give their all. 4 He has an eye for good and bad players, he weeded out those that were not pulling their weight and those that wanted to move on and replaced them with some fine players, whatever their reputations, who would have thought that Dion Dublin and David James would have been such good purchases. Mind you he did buy Merson. 5 He might not be a geordie, but he seems to like geordies, with Alan Thompson, Steve Stone and Steve Watson he has more geordies than Newcastle, would he want to bring them back home? might not be a good Idea. On the downside, he seems to prefer British players to foreigners so may have a problem coping with the fact that Newcastle have 12 foreigners on the books, Then again he could learn French...... Spanish ....Italian ..... Dutch ....Croatian , Georgian and Geordie And what of Alan Shearer, unlike Gullit , Gregory seems to like Shearer, he tried to buy him for Villa last year, only for the cheeky £10 million offer for him to be politely refused. Then again he looks like the kind of manager that would be strong enough to spring a surprise by selling Shearer if he thought it would benefit the team. If he or whoever does become the next manager did want to sell Shearer, who would want him on current form? Blackburn Rovers ... Would be hot favorites , they are becoming increasingly concerned about the poor performances of their multi million pound team and Brian Kidd's job is on the line. Jack Walker would pay well over the odds to bring Alan Shearer in as Blackburn player manager . Indeed Shearer last year was touted as the Blackburn player manager , he was said to be very flattered at the offer, but thought it was too early, They chose Brian Kidd, who has failed to keep them up . Things may be different this year with a growing minority of Newcastle fans starting to question Shearers ability, he may just fancy a move. |

The far eastern refereeing betting scam gets the better of Newcastle United. They lose 5 - 1 to Manchester United. Although Andy Cole got 4 and won the battle on the pitch, the geordies won the battle off it. READ MY REPORT HERE (it might just cheer you up?) |

Bobby Robson, says he is waiting for the phone call from the Directors of the Newcastle United about becoming the new manager boss. If asked he will jump at the chance to manage the club that he supported as a lad. He feels still fit enough to take on a coaching role at Newcastle and believes that he is strong enough to put up with the pressures of the job After managing England he went on to coach porto , sporting Lisbon , Barcelona and Eindhoven. he had been asked to manage Newcastle after Keegan left , but was still contracted to Barcelona, so had to turn it down. He insists that so far there has been no approach by the Newcastle United board, which scoffs rumours that he had already accepted the job . there were strong rumours that not only had he accepted the job in principle but had instructed the Newcastle directors to check on the availability of Don Hutchinson at Everton and Steve Stone at Villa. The focus now switches to Old Trafford for tomorrows game in which Newcastle united are 8 - 1 to win the game. Robert lee is expected to be back in the team after being given the number 37 shirt by Steve Clarke yesterday. When Shearer and lee arrived at training yesterday, the other players game them a round of applause , suggesting that they already new who the winners of the political battle in the dressing room were. It seems that none of the players liked Gullit and even the newer foreign recruits seemed happy that he has gone. The final straw for Gullit was when Ferguson , one of Gullits allies, barged into managers office demanding an explanation to the comment that "Newcastle wee winning before Ferguson and Shearer came on as subs". observers thought Ferguson was going to hit Gullit. With injury problems Clarke is expected to play:- Barton ......2 from Hughes, Dabizas, Goma ... Domi Dyer..............Lee ...............Speed............. Solano .....................Shearer ................ Ferguson Subs , Robinson and McClen... As well as the "who will be next manager" The fans are asking themselves, "Are we better off now than 12 months ago?" |

Ruud Gullit has resigned as the Newcastle manager. Steve Clarke will take charge of the next game against Manchester United on Monday Whoever gets this job will have a very hard task. I think that he will be told that he has to make do with virtually the same players , selling off the likes of Serrant, Pistone and Hamilton will be his only source of income. I also believe that the job should be until the end of this season. Put the next man on trial using the current tools at his disposal. If he gets us into a reasonable position then at the end of the season give him a longer contract and the funds to improve the team. I think the worst thing would be to tear the team apart and start from scratch. The next man has got to be able to get the best out of the current players. As for who it is? I would not mind a "Geordie dream team" of Robson (manager) Beardsley (attacking coach),Pearce (defensive coach) Waddle( assistant manager) with coaching roles for Shearer and Lee, so they all feel part of it. I think we could use a Geordie dream team. If not then martin O'Neill or Gordon strachan have the passion and ability . I don't think Venables or Howard Wilkinson or another foreign coach would be a good idea at the moment. |

Newcastle get to play Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia in the UEFA cup. The first match is on 16th September in Bulgaria., The second leg at St James park on the 30th September. between now and then we have a couple of easy warm up games against man U and Chelsea, both away. 36 hours after the game and I am just about calm enough to reflect on Wednesday nights game. It looks like Shearer will get his way, still captain of England and soon to have a new boss, expect an announcement on the future of Ruud Gullit sometime later today (Friday). It seems that Man U fans are not the only Glory hunters around , wanting to be on the winning side. It now seems quite trendy to slag off Gullit and praise Shearer... looks like I'm in the minority, We are all entitled to our opinions, but Don't you have a conscience? |
