The 28th Richmond Rapidplay, organised by Richmond Junior Chess Club, was held at the White House Community Association, Hampton on Sunday 10 March.
The Open attracted three International Masters, Peter Large, James Sherwin (USA) and Simon Williams. They were joined in the battle for first place by 16-year-old Desmond Tan. Desmond had an outstanding tournament, beating Large and drawing with both Sherwin and Williams. But the decisive game proved to be Simon Williams's round 3 win over veteran US IM James Sherwin. A further win against Peter Large in Round 5 allowed the Richmond 4NCL star to coast home with a score of 5½/6.
The Major section was yet another success for 17-year-old Donny Muter, whose score of 5/6 left him half a point ahead of Michael Kobylka. 11-year-old Richmond Junior Club member Robert Heaton's shared third place was a personal best and a grading performance above 160.
Surrey Girls star Teresa Khoo, aged 14, continued her fine run of form by winning the Intermediate section with a score of 5½/6 when her rival Chris Kreuzer could only draw his last round game. Another Surrey girl, Sarah Hegarty, aged 11, shared third place and the grading prize with big brother Daniel.
Juniors took the first two places in the Minor section, with Surrey's Ben Hutter (11) just edging out Chris Smith (14) of Hertfordshire.
