EPSCA U11 Finals
May 6 2000

It was a great disappointment to finish second after our overwhelming victory in the South East Zone. The main problem was losing our boards 3 and 4, Anton and Alexei Chernikov, due to chickenpox. We were also without a couple of other first choice players. As you will see from the results, although our boards 19 and 20 tried their hardest they just weren't quite strong enough.

Not for the first time we collapsed in rounds 2 and 3 after a strong first round. Sussex claimed on their web site that their success was due to banning Pokémon between rounds. I suspect there's an element of truth in this. We need to learn a lesson from this and look at the best ways to focus our players on chess and motivate them to play their best throught the competition, not just in the first round.

Still, many congratulations to Sussex on a well deserved success - achieved without David Howell. It's good to see a new name on the trophy.
