A Different Drum
Stories to turn the world upside down
Directed by Paul Burbridge, designed by Sean Cavanagh, written by Bridget Foreman, musical director Fiona Timothy.
The framework for the play comes from the true story of the plague-stricken Derbyshire village of EYAM (pronounced "eem") in 1665, where, in order to prevent the spread of the plague beyond the boundaries of the village, the whole community agrees to seal itself off from the outside world and await its fate.
A group of these people, locked up in the village, entertain and encourage each other by retelling stories drawn from other cultures and different periods of history - stories of similar acts of resistance and sacrifice. Of remarkable love in action.
In a kaleidoscope which will move from the seventeenth century to the present, from France to El Salvador, Poland to Bristol, lives of ordinary men and women will focus - people who have dared to cross the boundaries of accepted self-interest by living out a truth as hard as nails, with revolutionary results.
