H.C. "HERBIE" MOORE
With the death of Herbie Moore on the 19th of January at 77 years
of age, we have sadly lost one of our longest serving members.
Herbert joined the North End in April 1937 - no surprise in that
as his father had previously saved the club from extinction.
Apprenticed at Cammel Lairds, Herbie later became a Bevin
Boy and following the war joined the familys photographic
business in Dale Street, where talk was as much about cycling as
cameras.
In 1946 Herbie set up a purple patch for the North End when he
won the LTTCA Championship by virtue of a 238-mile 12
- an outstanding ride in those days. The following year he again
won the LTTCA championship. In 1950 he broke club record at 100
miles with 4-30-20, another quality ride.
Of later years he joined in the "BNE and Friends"
holidays in the Algarve and then Majorca. He may just as well be
remembered for such acts as attempting to ride down the Horseshoe
Pass on a fixed wheel, feet on the handlebars and carrying a
brolly. And also for the camaraderie he shared with long-distance
riders and the enjoying of a pint with the lads.

TRACK NIGHT
The penultimate monthly track night of the winter took place
early in February, with a good-sized attendance, including
several velodrome virgins! If you fancy a spin on the
boards, the last club winter session will be on Thursday the 4th
of March, from 8pm to 10pm. Pictures from the track night are
visible on the club photo
gallery.
LETTER FROM DOWN UNDER
(exclusive to the online newsletter!)
Dear Ruaraidh,
Please give my regards to all club members - and my best wishes
for a successful New Year.
Sorry to hear about Herb Moore - a great guy, and he will be
sadly missed. Well, I am sweltering in the heat here - 90 - 100º
most days.
I rode on the track in Perth (same as the one in Manchester) and
did 45 seconds for the 500 metres (a flying start) then I got
knocked off bby a 13-year old lad. Was taken to hospital by
ambulance, and had a dislocated shoulder and bruising. Don't get
knocked off here - $315 charge for the ambulance (roughly £125)
for a couple of miles. I think that hurt the most!
I rode in the triathlon on Australia Day (26th January) which is
a public holiday here. About 4,000 took part, and I finished in
3rd team. I was the oldest vet, and did 31 minutes for the 16km,
on a borrowed bike on quite a hilly course. Got a standing
ovation at the finish - bigger clap than the winner.
Cycling is very popular here, both road and track. They are very
sport-orientated. We will have to send a team!
Yours in sport,
Doug Phillips
I got this letter from Doug too late to include in the paper copy, but I thought I should publish it now. It'll go in the March edition of the standard newsletter.
THE NEW KIT
As promised last month, here are the details of our extra kit
order to come from Impsport. Note that this order does not
include any jerseys: The Bike Factory have placed another order
of short and long-sleeve jerseys, which are expected to arrive
much quicker than the last lot!
Whereas, in the past, a stock of kit has been bought to be sold
on to members, this time you must order each item beforehand.
There are (currently) no plans to repeat this order this year, so
take this opportunity to make yourself look more
professional. Please return all forms to Les
Kennedy no later than 28th February. Delivery is expected
approximately 6 weeks from order date.
These are the available items:
Further details on the items can be found in the Impsport catalogue, which Les will be bringing to club nights throughout February.
Please enclose £10 cheque made payable to BNECC for each item of kit you require as a deposit (£5 for mitts or bandanna and £3 for cap). These prices may be subject to a 10% reduction, dependent upon our order reaching a certain level. If this is the case, then all items will be reduced accordingly, and the correct price calculated upon receipt of items.

(Sorry - my HTML ability doesn't yet extend to

your phone line!)
