THE SITE OF THE BATTERY CAMP

The site of the battery camp.

Looking over from the top of the assault-course to the site of the battery camp below. The new rail-siding runs through where the billets for the 562nd Coast-Regiment, R.A. once were (No:18 on the graphic). A much-diminished dockland scene forms the backdrop, with a couple of cranes visible - minuscule versions of what used to be. A photograph from nearly the same location taken in 1978 shows how Workington's industrial scenery has altered.

The battery assault-course - where live ammunition was used during excercises at times - was in the cleft of the hollow between slag-banks. The engine-house for the searchlights was in the bottom of the hollow and slightly to the right of centre (WRT this photograph).
