At some point in the proceedings, it must have been decided that the old slag-bank alone was not strong enough to take the brunt of No:1 gun's load. Down below, a yawning cavity in the slag has been filled in with a wall constructed from the ubiquitous concrete-filled sand bags.
Close inspection reveals the pattern of the hessian sacking still present, despite sixty years of being licked ferociously by high tides. A smaller cave nearby has had a wall constructed within from yellow refractory bricks and back-filled - no doubt for the same reason.
