I gave up all my ListServe memberships ages ago, because the traffic was uncontrolled, and I could no longer bear the signal/noise ratio.

I regard blogging as a better way of having conversations with other people, and of providing early exposure to new material.

Unlike many bloggers, I don't post material or links just for the sake of it - only if there is something I want to say.

How to Subscribe

My blogs are AtomEnabled. This means that the blogging software (I use Blogger to generate and edit my blogs) produces an XML file in Atom format, as well as the HTML files you see in your browser. An Atom-Enabled newsreader will monitor the XML file,.and notify you when there is new material on the blog. Most good newsreaders will accept feeds in Atom as well as several versions of RSS. But for those of you who need RSS, I have registered all my blogs with Feedburner, which has a SmartFeed service to convert Atom into RSS.

There are many newsreaders available. You can download a simple one for free, or you can buy one with some fancy features. Alternatively, you can use an online newsreading service. (I use Bloglines, which is a free service.) The AtomEnabled website has a list of available newreaders and newsreading services that support Atom.

Each of my blogs should have a link to the Atom file and to the Feedburner SmartFeed, which you can clock into your newsreader. Alternatively, there is a button that will set up your subscription automatically with Bloglines. (You will need to register with Bloglines if you want to use this service.)

Your subscriptions are then entirely under your control. You can subscribe to as many blogs and newsfeeds as you want. You can organize your subcriptions, and review material when you want. And it doesn't fill your mailbox.
