A warehouse is collection of assets, available or accessible,
on some terms, to some community of users. Thus a data warehouse
is a collection of information assets.
A warehouse may be centralized, physically distributed, or virtual. A virtual warehouse may be accessed though a portal and/or using grid computing. |
A data warehouse can be described from the outside as
a very large component offering a range of data services, through a number
of well-defined interfaces. Internally, the data warehouse may be implemented
through multiple heterogeneous mechanisms, and may even be distributed
across multiple platforms / locations, which suggests a component-based
internal architecture, but this complexity can be hidden from data users.
This approach separates two aspects of Data Warehousing:
