Match report of all EnglandCounty Championship, played at The Redwell LeisureCentre Sunday 21-03-99
Kent sucessfully defended the title of English champions, when they met, and defeated, Staffordshire at the Redwell Centre, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire on Sunday 21st march. The victory marked two major achievements, 1] The first county to win the title three times (94/95 97/98 98/99). 2] The first county to win the title in consecutive seasons.
Match Report Session one The first session consisted of 4 games , 2 single, and 2 fours. This only produced a dissapointing 3 points, leaving Kent trailing by 5 points to 3, and a shot difference of -7. Session two Once again 4 teams competed, 2 pairs and 2 triples. The result was a little better on this occassion, both Kent and Staffs sharing 4 points each. But Kent managed to cut back the shot difference to -2. So, at this half way stage, Kent trailed by 9 points to 7, and by -2 shots overall. Session Three This session saw the return of the first session players, with different opposition, 2 singles and 2 fours. This session was, for Kent, a mini disaster as we only scored one win, 2 points, against Staffs 6. Our only success was that we reversed our minus shots total into a +6, thanks to a great win in the singles, by 22 - 5. At this stage Staffs were well in control and led by15 points to 9, but -6 shots. Session Four (Final session) This was the turn of the 2 pairs and 2 triples. To win the game, and the championship, Kent had to hold shot difference, and win 3 of the 4 games. Reflecting at the results of the sessions to date, not many gave Kent any chance of success. That is save Kent themselves. The word loose is not in their vocabulary. At the halfway stage of this session Kent were up on all of the mats, but only by the odd shot. As the game progressed Kent, spurred on by some very vocal support by the spectators, surged ahead, and completely outbowled Staffs to take all 8 points, and add to their shots difference total, a further 33 shots. Staffordshire were completely stunned, and could not believe what had happened to them. With victory in their sights they saw it stolen from under their noses, by one of the finest displays of sheer guts and determination ever seen in the final of this competition for many years, well done session 4. Final Score
