Saftey and Peace of Mind
South Africa, being a newly-developed democracy,
has many valuable lessons to offer and our programme offers the
youth a unique, poignant and exhilarating three weeks,
culminating in a visit to Robben Island. There are however a few
things to consider: although many regions are comparable with the
developed first world, there are vast areas that are undergoing
processes of renewal and development. Therefore extra care has
been taken to ensure the safety of the participants. We believe
that we have taken more than the necessary steps to offer this
developmental experience in a safe and secure environment. These
are some of the measures we have taken:
- The participants are escorted to and from South Africa by
reliable, responsible counselors who also serve as the
group mentors during the programme. The high counselor to
participant ratio of 1:8 is one of the steps we take to
ensure safety.
- Extensive and thorough local knowledge has gone into
planning each kilometre of our route. All precautions
have been taken to avoid risky or potentially dangerous
areas.
- Our tour leaders, managers and local counselors have
extensive experience of the route, roads and local
conditions. While following a fixed pre-determined
itinerary, our staff are trained to adapt these plans to
the day-to-day needs of the participants, or any other
eventuality.
- Throughout the programme, we have a qualified nurse on
duty and doctor on call 24 hours a day, maintaining
medical support services of the highest standard.
- There are open lines of communication with the Cape Town
head office at all times. This is achieved by telephone,
fax and email at the resident camps, and by mobile phone
during all touring stages of the programme.
Parallel Parent Tour
Parents are also encouraged to visit South Africa on a parallel,
yet separate tour of the country. They will be able to join the
camp on Sundays, which will be open for religious services and
parent visits. Please inquire through your representative or
directly to Camp iAfrika for further information about these
accompanying tours.
