Loft Conversions
We have undertaken the structural design and detailing for many loft conversions, one of which was featured on the television programme "Better Homes". Many loft conversions are quite straightforward to design, but some have proven to be very complex, particularly where the roofs are of hipped construction. We are experienced in converting very complicated roof structures, practically and cost effectively.
Conversion of loft space into domestic accommodation provides invaluable additional accommodation which is cost effective. As long as enough headroom exists in the loft and it is possible to fit in a staircase which complies with the Building Regulations, then loft conversions are often viable. A loft conversion is certainly an option to be considered when there is a requirement for additional accommodation and should be weighed up against the cost and disruption of moving house.
It is essential for structural design to be undertaken to ensure the stability of the roof structure as well as the new floor. It is normally necessary to provide additional support to the roof, particularly if props and trusses are to be removed to form the room. Additional weight of plasterboard and insulation also has to be accounted for in the design. The floor needs to be designed to support domestic loadings where ceiling joists are rarely sufficient.
