The information shown here is derived from a place name gazetteer of Suffolk. Although the three terms have similar meanings, it can be seen that they do have varying distributions. Greens are mainly concentrated on the boulder clay. Commons however are to be found mainly in the north-east, in the South Elmhams and Ilketshalls (where they overlap with greens) and along the east coast on light soils. Tyes have a restricted distribution in South Suffolk which suggests this area had particularly close links with Essex where tyes occur frequently.
