Otters are increasing throughout the County and can now be found on all the major river systems. Their comeback from extinction in the mid to late 1970s has been greatly aided by releases at a number of sites of captive bred animals by the Otter Trust. Most of the records shown on the map are from spraints left by otters beneath bridges and on river banks rather than actual sightings of the animals themselves. There is still a lot more work to be done before this species recovers to its former population levels and details of this work can be found in the Suffolk Biodiversity Action Plan.
