On board, as second officer in a multi-national crew, was Roald Amundsen, the future conqueror of the South Pole, and it was this expedition that fired him with his ambition to explore the Polar Regions. They were the first to spend a winter in the Antarctic pack ice. Amundsen studied the personalites aboard and became acutely aware of the importance of morale and strong leadership in these circumstances.

Bernacchi, of Italian origin, was the first Australian to play a significate part in Antarctic exploration. The Southern Cross expedition, on which he was physicist, was the first party to winter on the Antarctic continent.

Auth: (DAVIS, John King) Ed by Louise Crossley. Title: Trial By Ice. The Antarctic Journals of John King Davis. Pub-1997 Bluntisham Books. JKD was arguably the greatest of the captains in the age of Antarctic exploration, and he was obsessed with the Antarctic. His seven voyages from 1907 to 1930 gave him unrivalled experience in ice navigation. He believed in stern discipline and that it was the captain, not the expedition leader, who was in charge of the ship. His caution and pessimism often brought him into conflict with expedition leaders such as Douglas Mawson.

Title: The Quiet Land. The Antarctic Diaries of Frank Debenham. Ed. By June Debenham. Pub: 1992 Bluntisham. Frank Debenham was a member of the Terra Nova expedition and the main instigator, and the first director, of the Scott Polar Research Institute. The book is based on his diaries and were not intended for publication they however retain all the freshness and enthusiasm of a young man embarking on a great adventure. Plenty of photographs and Frank's own sketches throughout the book. A good primary source but you need to read between the lines to spot the problems he had being an Australian on an essentially a 'British' expedition.

Gerald Doorly was then one of the junior officers on the Morning but it was not until 1915 that he wrote about his experiences and of his impressions of Scott and of the other members of that early British National Antarctic Expedition. This is a very lively and often very amusing account.

Auth: GERLACHE DE GOMERY,A. Title: Voyage of the Belgica- Fifteen Months in the Antarctic. Pub: Translation edition by Bluntisham. The Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-9 was the most cosmoplitan of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration. Led by Lt. Adrien de Gerlache of the Royal Belgian Navy it was underfunded from the start and ill-prepared to overwinter in the ice pack. despite being stuck in the ice for almost a year the ship survived without serious damage. The mixture of nationalities - Belgian, Polish, Norwegian, American, Rumanian, Russian - ensured that communication was always a problem and this was exacerbated when they were all trapped inside the cold damp, ship in winter. That it ended well was largely due to just four men, the American doctor Frederick Cook, the Norwegian second mate, Roald Amundsen, the Belgian first mate, George Lecointe and de Gerlache himself.
