Befallen
This guide to Befallen is comes from my own perceptions of my adventures in Befallen, starting around 15th level and now as a 19th level Warrior. You could have other perceptions, find outright mistakes, and whatnot. If you find mistakes or other inaccuracies, please feel free to email me (Zantaer). I take no responsibility from any deaths you incur from using this guide. I do, however, expect a 10 percent fee from any monies you make from using it (grin).
NOTE:
Also, if you like to adventure and finding things out on your own, you should not read this guide. It will completely spoil the dungeon for you. It lists mobs available, items available, some tips to each level, tips in general, traps, and mentions spawn rates as well. This is a spoiler, for those of you who like that term. It's intended to be a spoiler, and to keep people alive and safer when they go to Befallen.
Befallen is a undead dungeon located off of West Commons (commons). You will find all sorts of undead in this dungeon ranging from level 5 (or lower) decaying skeletons to mid-20s level Mummies (one named Mummy). The dungeon is a normal medieval 'dungeon' setting, with lots of doors, actual rooms made of stone, lots of debris and fallen beams and the like. The doors are medium height, everyone Human sized or smaller should have little trouble with them. Barbarians will have trouble in spots, having to duck under a beam or debris at some places, or kill a rat to be able to get through a doorway. Trolls and Ogres will have to actually duck to get through every door. The Ogre and female human Shadowknights are in an area where a beam has fallen, which is impassable to Ogres and Trolls (they cannot even get to this area).
Mobs available:
Rats (normal, giant, plague, levels 3ish - 10ish, guess on the upper end)
Assorted Skeletons (decaying, normal, greater, elf, and ice boned, levels 5 through 25ish).
Dread Bones (basically skeletons, levels 8ish-12ish)
Assorted Mummies (lesser, normal, and one named, levels 7ish-22ish)
Assorted ShadowKnights (5 in all, levels 15-20)
Assorted Necromancers with pets (initiates, acolytes, theurgists, level 10ish - 17ish)
Ghouls (levels 12ish - 16ish)
Will-O-Wisps (normal, levels 10-14ish)
Items Avaiable:
Bone Bladed Claymore (BBC - highly prized and high priced) - Troll SK on level 3
Magic 2H slashing, Dam 17, delay 45, -8 AGI, WAR, PAL, SHD, RAN, all races
Barbed Arm plates - On the Ogre SK on level 2, AC 8, +2 Dex
Raw Hide Leather Armor - various kinds available on mummies and upper level skeletons. Each piece sells for 2-8 gold.
Lightstones - Greater, normal, nosave. Found on the wisps
Bags, backpacks, boxes - found on various mobs, upper levels
Rusty Weapons - on skeletons, ghouls, mummies, and necros
Bronze Weapons - on upper level necros, ghouls and skeletons at times.
Robes, White and Brown - for mage types, on upper level Necros
Dagger of Marnek - Dam 3, delay 30, throwable, +3 INT, +15 mana, Necromancer only
Mallet items - Mallet Head and Hilt found on elf skeleton, quest items for Thex Mallet. I believe there is another piece you need from a level 25ish skeleton wizard somewhere.
Keys:
There are three levels in Befallen. Each level has a locked door going to the next level. Level one and two keys are normal items, and will rent out fine. Level 3 key is a NORENT key, and it DOES NOT say that in the description. If you log out with it on you, you will loose it. If you want to keep it, put it inside a container in your bank box. This works. I know of no other way to keep this key.
To clear up any confusion, I'll explain a bit where the keys are. Normally, if you have 3 levels, you will need two keys (one key from level 1 to level 2, and another key from level 2 to level 3). You need a key to get from level 1, to level 2. This is called the Level one key.
The keys can be found on Shadow Knight NPCs on each level. On level one, there is a Dark Elf Shadow Knight (looks more like a necromancer) which has the key to level two.
To get the key to the 3rd level, you have to do two things. There is an Ogre Shadowknight in a room, but you have to unlock a door to get to him. Across from the locked door, there is a female Shadowknight that spawns with a key to level one and a key to the level 2 door to get to the Ogre SK (ShadowKnight). Once you get this key, you can get to the Ogre SK. The Ogre SK will have 3 keys on him, level one (Splintered Wooden), level two (bone headed) and level three (smoked glass). Once you get to level three, there is a (highly prized, see below) Troll SK. He will also have keys to level three, and at least one other key which I believe is to level 2, possibly also a level one key. I haven't killed (and then looted) him enough (he's constantly camped if high levelers are in the dungeon) to remember how many keys he has.
Traps:
There are two traps that I know of in this dungeon. Both will get a lower level killed and they will have a very tough time doing a corpse retrieve. They are both ways to get to level 3 in a hurry.
On level 1, there is a well. Skeleton Lord (level 14ish) spawns right next to it, and it's just around the corner from the room where the Dark Elf SK's bedroom is. If you go into the well (it's a dry well), you'll fall two stories to level 3. I don't know how much damage you'd take as I've never done it, but I'd guess 50 to 100 points of damage, maybe less. The room you fall into has random spawns. Could be willowisps, necromancers, ice boned or greater skeletons, or ghouls. Below 10th level your dead with a quickness.
On level 2, there is a hole in the floor that doesn't LOOK like a hole. It's obvious there is something there on the floor, and it IS a hole to level 3. It's in the room where the female SK spawns, right inside the door (this is the room directly across from the locked door that leads to the Ogre SK). If you walk slow and cafeully, you can go around it without a problem. I don't suggest Trolls or Ogres go into this room with their bulk. If you fall through the hole, you will end up in a room with some debris in it. Back up a bit away from the walls onto the debris (not too high or mobs will attack you from above), and shout for help. You'll need someone to escort you out of level 3. Two mobs spawn (random again) right outside the door. Could be ghouls, necromancers, ice boned or greater skeletons.
Level One:
The first level houses many low level mobs. Decaying and normal skeletons, lots of rats, Skeleton Lord and the dark elf Shadowknight. This level is good for players above 5th level up to around 10th, maybe a little less. 5th level players will likely have some difficulty unless they have some good equipment or are in a good party. Learn this level before you go on to level 2. You can get through the locked door easy by following someone else through when they open it, but I do not recommend this. This is a good way to get killed by a train, as you'll not be able to leave level 2 quickly without a key (although you can get one off the female human or Ogre SK). The key can be found on the dark elf SK (as well as an occasional rusty halberd).
Level Two:
The second level starts getting fun. Skeletons and greater skeletons, lesser mummies, some lower end necromancers (don't underestimate these guys, they can cast pretty good plus they have pets), plague rats, and the shadowknights. Level 2 of Befallen is great for characters up to about 15th level (above 9th at least), but I suggest being in at least a small party (2 to 4 characters). Loot is great for these levels of characters here. Creatures start dropping raw hide leather armor, which sells good to vendors and players if you can find people to buy it. Start getting some gold of creatures instead of copper and silver all the time as well. The Ogre SK on this level usually has barbed armplates, and an occasional bronze weapon (bronze halberd, for example). Do not leave level 2 to go to level 3 unless you or a party member has a key. Most of the time, if your on the third floor, you won't be running back to the zone. You'd often die by being hit from behind before you get there, but sometimes you might make a run for it. Have a key in the party before you go on.
Level Three:
Here is where the higher level characters need to be - grouped. Do NOT go to level 3 if your under 22nd or so level without a group of at least 4 people (unless you know exactly what you are doing). At level 22, most everything will be green to you, but alot of stuff will still attack you and call friends. You get 3 or 4 green guys here on yer ass, your probably dead. Also, magical weapons here are a must. Ghouls, ice boned skeletons and will-o-wisps here take no damage from normal weapons.
The Troll SK here drops the occasional Bone Bladed Claymore (BBC), which sells up to 350 plat (200 on the extreme lower end). There is a necro here that drops the necro robe (white robe, don't know what it's called, I believe it's AC 8 plus some mana, maybe int as well), plus the Dagger of Marnek. Ghouls and necros will sometimes drop a bronze weapon, and the Troll SK has a bronze claymore instead of the BBC sometimes. There is an elf SK somewhere on this level (supposedly very dangerous area) that drops barbed leggings (like the barbed armplates upstairs I believe).
You need to be in a GOOD group on this level. What do I mean by a good group? I was camping the Troll SK with my group the other day, all day. We lost two party members all day in this group, out of about 6 or 7 hours. It consisted of this: 2 18th Warriors, 17th Paladin, 18th Cleric, 19th Mage, 18th Necromancer. We communicated well, warriors pulled creatures back to the party while we waited for SK to spawn, and we did extremely well. Up to 5 mobs at a time we could handle it. And, everyone was level headed, and communicated well. Warriors did not both pull creatures at the same time, we watched health and mana, everything a good group should do in my opinion. And, we lost two party members that time. At the least, do NOT go to level 3 without a good healer (preferably a Cleric as their offensive spells here rock). I also highly suggest a Paladin, and at least one other tank plus at least one burner (mage type). So, 2 tanks, 1 healer, 1 burner at the minimum. More if you wanna play it safe. I've been there with one 18th Cleric, 18th Warrior (me), 17th ShadowKnight, and 17th Cleric and we did fine, although we did loose a couple of members a couple of times and didn't do quite as many fights as the previous group I was in (but we DID get 3 BBCs inside of three hours!!). It's possible to make many many pp in a gaming session on level 3. All total (MINUS what I got for the BBC I sold), I made 120pp over Memorial Day Weekend in about 25 hours of gameplay, as well as gained a level and a half.
Trains:
Trains happen in Befallen just like most other dungeons. It's alot like Blackburrow, but with less people on to help. First time I entered Befallen (I was alone too), I entered and the elf skeleton started whacking away at me (he was red to me at the time, and I was 15ish level). Someone trained him up to the exit and he was playing havok on all the lower level players running around on one. I've seen Graynok (probably mispelled but he's the named Mummy, around level 25ish), an ice boned, an elf, and some greater skeletons all trained to the entrance all at once in one bug train. So, be careful, watch yer ass, and have the keys.
Spawns:
Most everything has a 10 minute spawn rate in EQ, from what I've seen. There are lots of exceptions to this, like those mobs that drop real nice equipment. Befallen seems to be no different. Everything has about a 10 minute spawn rate with the exceptions.
Dark Elf Necro is a 20 minute spawn on level 1.
Ogre and female human SKs are 20 minute spawns on level 2.
Troll SK on level 3 is completely erratic, totally sporadic, and very confusing. Sometimes, there will be 1 sighting in 10 hours. Then he spawns 4 times inside of 3 and a half hours and serves up 3 claymores. I can't figure it out. Some people say it's anti-camp in that room, and you have to be outside the room. I don't have a clue, and I've tried to figure it out. My roommate suggested that it could be a cycle thing. Some monsters only come out at certain times of the day, like the skeletons and mummies in Lake Rathe coming out at night and the gnolls spawning in the same spots during the day. The Troll SK could be on some game-month cycle. No one is sure that I've spoken with.
The Necromancer Thuergist - There is a necro that serves up the Dagger of Marnek and some necro robes on level 3. Anticamp room, which means he won't spawn if anyone is in it, but ghouls, ice boned and greater skeletons will. Seems like it's a cycle on this one. A ghoul, a skele, a necro acolyte (or some other necro without the robes), then maybe a robes necro. Maybe once an hour you'll see the robes/dagger necro.
HINT #1: Have the key for the door(s) UP from you in your inventory (if your on level 2, then the level one key; if your on 3, then both the level 3 and level 1 key). Not in a bag, not a box, or a backpack. Give it it's own inventory slot. Why? Easy access. I've run from trains from level 2 to the zone about 20 times. When you have 5 mobs whacking away at your backside, you DO NOT want to open a backpack to grab a key. Use your keypad as your running to the door, have your key ready in hand and click on that door when you get close, never stop running. This has saved my life before, as well as other party members. What's even worse is when your key is in ONE of your 4 or 5 backpacks, and your not sure which... Have the key(s) you need in your inventory.
HINT #2: When your maxed on weight, you need to unload some to a vendor. There is a vendor right outside the dungeon, about 10 seconds away. I suggest NOT going to this vendor, as it's right in the path of about 3 hill giants and you'll never see em coming, you'll just be dead. When you exit Befallen, go straight out the cave exit and go over the hill (watching for Hill Giants). Once over the hill, you'll see a set of cottages. There are at least 4 vendors here to sell your wares too. They might not like evil races, I'm not sure. Before you go into them, look around the area scouting for nasties. Lots of Griffons and Hill Giants, but it's much much safer than across the hill. Also, Giddeon Gix roams this area, a dark elf that likes to kill people. He is about 15th level, but I've heard he's much like Dorn and DVinn, killing people much higher level than himself. He sets up a bit off to the south side (I think, might be east) of the cottages. He doesn't wander, but people train him from time to time.
