THE STORY
On 17th June 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment came to Battery Wagner in hand to hand combat which was a key fortification protecting Charleston Harbour. The Regiment was filled with some 1,000 Black soldiers but it was commanded by a white man, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.
During and up to the end of the War more than 40% were killed, including Colonel Shaw. When he died the Southern Army stripped his body and threw it into a ditch with his Regiment including lots of Black people. This was intended to be an insult to people who know him. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw's father told reporters "We can imagine no holier place than which he is..... nor wish him better company- what a bodyguard he has!" The Southern Army won this Battle but lost the War.
WHY BLACK PEOPLE FOUGHT FOR THE NORTH
Black people fought for the North because they wanted to try and get their freedom instead of being slaves. But they weren't allowed to fight until 1863 because people still didn't think they were as good as them, even the North. When the U.S Government allowed them to fight. At first Black soldiers were only paid 7 dollars a month while the White soldiers were
getting 13 dollars because whites, even the ones who didn't like slavery still thought the Blacks weren't as good as them and even when they were fighting they were still dis-respected, they couldn't accept them as decent American like themselves. President Lincoln, for a time thought it would be a good idea to free the slaves and then send them to live in Central America.
WHY THE CIVIL WAR STARTED
The Civil War was about slavery because the English when they captured slaves from Africa they sold them to the West Indies, South America and North America and the South did agree with this and the North didn't so they were arguing and this started. Also another reason was because when these were arguing the South split up from the United States and called themselves the Confederate States of America (C.S.A) or the confederacy.
WHAT WHITE PEOPLE THOUGHT ABOUT THIS
We interviewed some White people from the North and the South to see what they thought about this, and this is what they
said. We interviewed a person from the South and he said "Why should we have these Black people in this country they weren't born there, so if they do come into the country they should be slaves because they are not as good as us." We then interviewed a man from the North and he said "Why should we have the right to capture them and make money off it. Okay they aren't as good as us but it isn't right to keep them as slaves so I'm fighting for their freedom."
HOW THE CONFEDERATES TREATED THE BLACKS
The Southern Army (Confederates) treated the Blacks really badly thinking they were very inferior to them when clearly they were clearly just as intelligent as them. Even when they were slaves they treated them bad, hitting them and whipping them sometimes even killing them. So they treated them really bad and it was no wonder a War started.
STATISTICS

INTERVIEWS
We interviewed a man from the North and the South and this is what the man from the South said " I'm disappointed that we lost but we shouldn't have Black people in this country or we should have rights over them, they are still not as good as us!" We then interviewed a man from the North and he said " I'm delighted with this, I wasn't so sure about them at first but I have trust in them now and even if they weren't as good as us they should still have their own rights.
MY OPINION
I think it was right to free the slaves because they should have their own rights no matter how inferior they are which they have proved that they are just as good as White people and as brave if not braver and I think they have earned their right to become real citizens their country which it is now and now they should be respected.
