"I need a good, long drink," said Shadow to no one in particular. He was sitting in the changing room back at the Assassin's Guild headquarters, cleaning the last drops of blood from his ghostsuit. Looking around the room at the exhausted faces of the younger assassins, he could see the night's adrenaline and combat drugs draining out of them leaving only exhaustion in its wake.

"You look like you need a good, long sleep, old man!" laughed Skiv, the oldest of them, and the one they looked to for guidance. A quiet laugh went around the room, but there was no hiding their tired eyes, and stifled yawns.

After the last of them had left for their dormitories, Shadow made a quick circuit of the room ensuring that their gear was properly cleaned and stowed away. He lingered slightly at each person's locker, wondering how many of them would be left when this was all over, wanting to remember as much as possible to guard against the day when memories would be all that was left of them.

"I hope I'm up to this" he muttered quietly as he took a last glance around the room, turned the lights off, and left. Walking out the front of the non-descript building in the manufacturing district that houses the Assassin's Guild, he used his thought-commo to call his car round the front. It might have been expensive getting that AI installed in the car, but on nights like tonight it was worth it, just so that he didn't have to drive. Besides, since his recent gains, he could afford it.

Getting in the car, he sank into the soft leather seat and said, "I need a drink, car."

"No problem Shad, I know just the place" replied the car, gliding of into the empty street. You pay for what you get when it comes to AI's, and he was glad he'd plumped for the best in semi-sentient AI's that he could possibly afford.

"Oh yeah Shad, I nearly forgot," continued the car "Cathy phoned a couple of times while you were away. She wouldn't leave a message, or somewhere to contact her, but she seemed pretty worried. Personally I think she's a bit strange, but you gotta do what ya gotta do choomba. Oh, and one more thing...I was looking through some brochures and I saw this really nice car you could put me in, a classic McLaren F1 from 1996, titanium alloy chassis..."

Unfortunately for the car, Shadow's mind was elsewhere. "I hope Cathy hasn't gone over the edge" though Shadow worriedly. "When Patriarch told me to help her, he said she had some problems, but in this psychotic world the slightest thing can flip anyone upside-down and inside-out without warning." He was about to tell car to get Patriarch on the phone when he changed his mind. "That's just my paranoia talking, " he thought, "if she's got real problems she'll call me again... Now I really need a drink"
