Hello to you,

I'm A. E. Robert (Bobbie) Shergold born 1945 in Portsmouth and married to Dora who is my very best friend and soul mate.

We have lived in Wellingborough in the east Midlands of the UK for 10 years and do sometimes feel a little lonely, as apart from one of our daughters we believe we are the only Shergold's in this immediate area.

We've been researching our Shergold family since Nov. 1998, and like most other family researchers, we really wished we had started sooner.  Just so we could have captured more of the family history already lost.

My initial interest was to protect the many stories that all families have and ensure that my children's children have as much knowledge of the history of our family.

You are most welcome at our web site and if you are a Shergold or have an interest in our proud name then we would welcome an email with some knowledge of your own Shergold family, and who knows we may be related.

Assembled November 1999 by Robert (Bobbie) Shergold born Portsmouth 1945.

My special thanks to Jean Shergold, Philip Wall & June Page for their  most helpful contributions.

The  origins of the 'Shergold' name.

The earliest record of anything resembling the Shergold name was in 1377, with a William Shergot, by 1545 the name had developed to Shergall

In 1576 there is a record of a Robert Shergolld (two 'l's') which is the first time the name had progressed closely to its current form.

It is most unlikely that the name has ever been connected to anyone either producing coinage or working with it.  It is most likely that the name has developed from an unrecorded personal name, and is of English origin.
