Produced at the N.C.C.A. this piece was an experiment in combining  2d and 3d techniques to create a distinctive style which was economic to render and visually cohesive.

Software

The characters were modelled in Softimage and textures were created in Photoshop  Metal Ray’s Toon Shader was then applied.Houdini was used for compositing.

 Notes

* The look of the piece was influenced by Manga animation and Comic book styles

* The toon shader was applied to the models but only to give a black outline, around Lambert shading.

* To add to the toon effect simple textures were create using back lines

* As with 2d animation the primary characters were rendered separately and overlayed on to still backgrounds

* The characters were rendered on the twos

* Costly effects such as shadows were only used when they would have a high impact
