MAIN PAGE WORLD LINKS CHAMPIONSHIPS (RD 2)
The second round of the World Links Championships at LS Tour saw the field whittled down to 16 golfers, and a few big names fall by the wayside.

The matches were played at Barton Creek, in reasonably easy scoring conditions. Even allowing for the conditions, world No 1 Anders Bernsveden's(1) score of 54 (-18) obviously scared his opponent off - Mr Stone(33) being a no-show. Showing this sort of form, can anyone stop the young Swede winning the title?

One player who won't be stopping him is 16th seed Steve Lawrence. He shot a respectable 64 (-8), but it wasn't good enough to stop his opponent, 48th seed Damon Bartling, from advancing to the last 16 courtesy of an excellent 60 (-12).

There was a tight match between Bjoern Klohs(45) and James Olorenshaw(13). 100% of fairways hit and eagle on the last hole wasn't enough for Olorenshaw as he lost with a 62 (-10) to Bjoern's 61(-11). Klohs now goes on to face 4th seed Simon Courcha.

5th seed Sal Dali was most impressive, returning a 58 (-14) which beat Don Edgar's 62 (-10). The match turned on the final five holes. 5 straight birdies won it for Dali as Edgar dropped a shot on the 14th and parred the final two holes.

The Schuetz(12) versus Timmerman(21) match provided the kind of scoring that would have been expected. But it was Schuetz that won through with an impressive 58 (-14).

Ernie Barnes(15) and Mike Burns(47) tied at 61 (-11) after their rounds. Both made one eagle - Burns on the par 4 12th, but Barnes won the tiebreaker thanks to his tally of birdies. Another tiebreak win came for Microbell(11) over Chuck Parkey(22). One extra birdie was all it took to give the game to Microbell.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the round came with the exit of one-time world no 1 Markus Drews. Markus, seeded 7th in this competition, has been playing a lot of powerstroke lately. His 2-click game was a little ragged, and Gary Best(26) won comfortably, 61 (-11) to 67 (-5).

Lloyd Scheidt(6) showed why he is now regarded as second favourite for this event by scoring 57 (-15). This was easily enough to beat the 65 (-7) of his opponent, Steve Ritenour(27).

There were too other no-shows in this round, Ian Downs(40) and Saunders(9) losing the chance to progress.

The third round sees the competition move to Harbour Town, where the wind will blow, but the greens will be soft and slow. This combination of conditions is likely to lead to a real mixture of scores. The flat and slow Harbour Town greens won't require many putts, but the narrow tree-lined course will produce plenty of dropped shots in windy conditions if a golfer's snap isn't working.

The standout match is Sal Dali(5) versus Mike Schuetz(12). Both of these world top 10 players are capable of great things - two sub 60s are not out of the question. It's a tough match to call, but Mike Schuetz is probably the slight favourite.

We predict that the following players will make it through to the quarterfinals:

Anders Bernsveden
Zac Iverson
Simon Courcha
Mike Schuetz
Steve Carmichael
Gary Quin
Paul Willey
Lloyd Scheidt
