Summary
Principles of Tree Hazard
Assessment and Management
by David Lonsdale
'Principles of Tree Hazard Assessment and Management' is the latest
handbook produced by the DETR in the series 'Research for Amenity Trees'. It completes a
series of three essential research books with the other titles being 'Diagnosis of
ill-health in trees' and 'The body language of trees'. As the title suggests the content
of this book addresses the subject of tree hazard identification, assessment and
management.
- Chapter 1 Introduction. This chapter introduces the subject of hazard and risk.
- Chapter 2 Potential Causes of Hazard. Chapter 2 includes sections on tree design,
reaction wood, fork failure, grafts, uniform stress, root anchorage & injury, splits,
decay as a hazard factor.
- Chapter 3 Decay: its development within trees. This chapter describes the
characteristics of the different types of decay found within trees. Subjects discussed
include dysfunctional wood, rates of decay, methods of entry etc.
- Chapter 4 Principle Decay Fungi. The characteristics and significance of the main
tree decay causing fungi are described in detail (includes colour photographs and
diagrams).
- Chapter 5 Tree Inspection Procedures and Reporting. This chapter describes the
different methods of inspecting and assessing tree hazards. It describes and explains many
of the common defects found on trees. Other subjects include assessment of decay, decay
detection devices, recording and reporting.
- Chapter 6 Remedial Action. This chapter discusses the different types of action
available to the consultant during the process of tree hazard management. Subjects include
load lightening, crown reduction, topping, sail area, thinning, bracing principles &
systems, propping, guying and treatment of decayed wood & cavities.
- Chapter 7 Prevention of Hazards. Chapter 7 describes the ways and means of hazard
prevention. Subjects include planning, nursery and pre-planting practices, tree
establishment, vandalism, construction works, formative pruning, target pruning, pruning
times, wound dressings and pollarding.
- Chapter 8 Environmental Implications of Hazard and Disease Management. This
chapter discusses the relationship between environmental issues and tree hazard
management. Subjects include deadwood, diseases and veteran tree management.
- Appendices. Appendix 2 contains a listing of common tree genera with information
for each on the fungi causing decay, diseases leading to decay and mechanical
characteristics. Appendix 3 contains examples of forms for the carrying out of tree risk
assessments.
As with the other books in this series the 'Principles of Tree Hazard Assessment and
Management' is another must for the arboriculturist. David Lonsdale has produced an
excellent source of up to date arboricultural information for both the consultant and
arborist.
