APN5 is a short guide which introduces the reader to the subject of shade
produced by trees. It describes the many different factors at work such as tree height,
spread, latitude, bearing, duration etc and includes a number of useful mathematical
formulae. Shadow Length tables are also included which give shadow lengths for a tree of
1m height (multiply for actual tree size) for each month of the year at four
different latitudes in the UK being London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Inverness.
APN5 contains the following headings.
Where is the sun in the sky?
The effect of latitude.
The effect of topography.
Shadow length at different times and places.
Tree shape and foliage density.
Ghosts and shadows on T.V.
Appendix A: Formula for calculating the Solar Zenith Angle.
Appendix B: Formula for calculating the Length of a Shadow.
Appendix C: Formula for calculating the Direction of a Shadow.
Appendix D: Formula for calculating the Time and Direction of Sunrise and Sunset.
Appendix E: Formula for calculating the Duration of the Shading According to Crown
Diameter.
APN5. 8 pages including diagrams. Published in 1999 and available direct from the AAIS.
