On November 1993, Southwark Playhouse
opened its doors to the public.

Five months earlier Juliet Alderdice, Mehmet Ergen and Tom Wilson had seen the potential of this characterful building only 5 minutes walk from the Globe.

The area is rich in history. Dickens would have passed this building when it was a tea and coffee warehouse. It became an engineering workshop and latterly a Filipino church. With their limited resources they set about creating a sixty seat theatre and bar in an area which promised exciting things.

Just over three years later, with the help of the National Lottery they have reopened a warm and welcoming, fully accessible, 90 seater theatre ready to take its place in the new revitalised area of Bankside.
