Geez, what a horrible story. Poor guy. I don't think this quite fits the bill of an "intellectual, skeptical" atheist who converted to Christianity--it sounds more like a hedonist who moved from physical indulgence to the warm blanket of Christian group-think as means to his "good feelings". I actually use the idea of evolution to further my morality: I try to be honest because I think it is harmful to society when people are not honest, I am the opposite of promiscuous because I do NOT want to procreate (there are enough people in the world without my adding to the population!). The author of that passage also mentioned that he would "assert dominance over others" representing survival of the fittest. I do not get pleasure out of hurting or dominating anyone, nor do I try to do so.
