Steve arrived a few minutes after The Fitzy Witch Project started as an additional camera operator.
He was instructed to help with the supplies, but his inclusion of a huge toy Batman, and a Superman cap were probably what got him killed.
After an argument with one of the locals, Jim, Steve was never seen again. Until later on in the film, where you see him again...but apart from that...
