A short stroll along the
seafront takes you to the harbour, which is the hub of
Seahouses. In years
gone
by, an active fishing fleet worked from here but, more recently, most of the
boats run trips to the Farne Islands, once famous for Grace Darling’s rescue,
now a bird
sanctuary and home to a large seal colony.
Nature lovers can enjoy the
bird life in nearby Budle Bay or Druridge Country Park or you may be lucky
enough to see one of our red squirrels in local woodland.
For the more energetic,
Bamburgh Castle can be reached by walking along the white sand beach seen from
our windows. Pete and Jenni are happy to supply details of walks on the coast or
in the nearby Cheviot Hills or you can borrow one of our books of local walks.

The St. Aidan Hotel is an
ideal base for a visit to the “Secret Kingdom” of North Northumberland. Near
at hand, dotted along the coast with its miles of safe, sandy beaches, are
numerous castles, some still homes, others now ruined, but all evocative of a
colourful past. Further inland, but well within easy reach, are the stately
homes of Cragside, Wallington Hall, Belsay and Alnwick Castle itself, seat of
the Duke of Northumberland. Lindisfarne with its castle and priory and the
walled town of Berwick are also popular with our guests.
A wide variety of sports are available locally, from
golf (there are at least nine courses within thirty minutes drive…many of
which are links courses), and horse riding to diving, surfing and sea or river
fishing. The county has much to offer, but most of all it combines the peace and
tranquility of yesteryear with the comforts of today.
