| Les Ferdinand was snapped up by QPR for £15,000
in April 1987 after they had spotted him playing
for Hayes in the Vauxhall-Opel league. Although
given an early debut, coming on a substitute
against Coventry in August that year, he found
his chances few at Loftus road and was loaned to
Brentford before spending a year in the Turkish
league with Besiktas. after his return to Loftus
Road, he was kept out of the side by players like
Trevor Francis, Colin Clarke, Mark Falco and Roy
Wegerle, but when Rangers suffered a crop of
injuries "Sir Les" responed with some
vital goals in 1990/91 as QPR fought to get away
from the bottom of the first division. He began
1991/92 as first choice under new boss Gerry
Francis but then lost out to newcomer Gary
Thompson. Ferdinand fought his way back again and
in 1992/23 was selected for the full England side.
By the end of that season he had scored 46 goals
in 99 senior appearances fo Rangers, including 2
hat-tricks in three days over easter 1993. In the
summer of 1995 "Sir Les" was transfered
to Newcastle for £6 million after hitting 24
goals the previous season. |
