Rangers will take a slender one goal lead back to Loftus Road after a hard fought 2-1 victory against Cardiff in the Worthington Cup First Round.Gerry Francis took his men to Ninian Park knowing they would get a difficult game from the Welsh side. Rangers almost found themselves a goal down after just 33 seconds when Danny Hill's long range effort was well held by Ludek Miklosko in the Rangers goal. Despite some neat possession Cardiff found it difficult to create chances and it was Rangers causing all the goalmouth incident. On 7 minutes Tim Breaker's diving header forced a spectacular save from Jon Hallworth and both Matthew Rose and Danny Maddix saw their headers fly inches wide. On 32 minutes Rangers took the lead with in spectacular fashion. Highly rated Richard Langley was left free in the box and from six yards out he let fly with a spectacular overhead kick which flew in off the crossbar.Cardiff almost drew level on the stroke of half-time when Jeff Eckhardt saw his header go just the wrong side of the upright, but it was Rangers who went into the break with a one goal lead. Cardiff came out after the break and began to dominate the match but after 65 minutes, against the run of play Gavin Peacock's angled drive flew in off Jason Fowler to give Rangers a two goal cushion. The lead was to last only two minutes as Jason Bowen's 67th minute diving header brought Cardiff back into the game in spectacular fashion. The Welsh side then had enough possession to grab an equaliser but couldn't turn it into chances and Gerry Francis' men held out for the win.
