WHAT'S NEW AT RHYL MINIATURE RAILWAY?

The railway reopened over Easter Sunday and Monday 1999. It is shown below in operation on Whit Sunday.

{Whit 1999 on crossing}  The railway now follows a slightly different alignment past the main entrance to the Marine Lake, where the train is seen here. The gradient here is slightly greater than before, but has not caused significant problems so far.
{Whit 1999 in station}  Since the reopening of the railway volunteers have played an ever greater role; indeed paid staff have been used on only a handful of occasions.

The arrival of new volunteers has been very encouraging, although more are always welcome.
{remaking curvr} .The railway contractors had to return just before Easter to relay one curve which was to tight for the steam locomotive. This, and the other essential work, was completed 'just in time'.

Since December 1998 work carried out has included:

  1. Complete relaying of the worst section of track.
  2. Painting the shed green (done by the contractors).
  3. Strimming and weedkilling to recover older sections of track.
  4. Reconnecting the water supply.
  5. Return of Joan from Windmill Farm.
  6. Stretching lengths of new track laid tight to gauge; complete relaying of one tight curve.
  7. Much spot resleepering work.
  8. Recommissioning Clara with recored radiator, replacing core plugs and air system, remaking pins in drive system.
  9. Full repaint of Clara into light blue livery.
  10. Rectifying an attack of vandalism that took place in June; subsequently strengtheing shed security.

Much remains still to do but we are still committed to keeping the wheels turning.
