More InfoIntroduction
This garden was started in the summer of 2001 at which point it was entirely laid to lawn apart from a thin border down one side in which a few small trees and bushes, mostly laurel and hawthorn had been planted by the builders.
I wanted to try as many different types of planting as possible so divided the garden up into separate areas depending on the natural conditions. For example, the damp corner by the house has become the 'bog garden' and the opposite corner which gets full sun all day has become the 'sunny garden'. The links below will take you to each of the different areas.
There is also a 'Bits&Bobs' area where I'll put anything to do with the garden which doesn't fit naturally into one of the defined areas.
The Gardens

This area of the garden isn't actually boggy but is naturally wetter than the rest of the garden as the run off of rainwater is hindered by the house. I've made part of it more boggy by burying an old pond-liner to hold more water for plants such as the Gunnera Manicata (pictured) and the Zantedeschia.T h e W o o d l a n d G a r d e n
This corner is quite shady in the summer when the Oak tree just outside my boundary is in leaf. The feeling I've aimed for is the edge of a wood where there is dappled shade. It's planted with a variety of shade tolerant plants such as ferns and forget-me-nots.T h e S u n n y G a r d e n
This corner gets full sun for most of the day and is relatively sheltered so it gives me an opportunity to try out some more exotic plants although most are fully hardy anyway as I'm quite far north.T h e P a t i o G a r d e n
This is still under construction but it again gets full sun for most of the day so this is where I've placed the patio. I'm thinking of planting mostly blue flowers in this area and will also have plenty of exotic but tender plants in pots which can be moved into the greenhouse over winter.T h e P l a y G a r d e n
This is an area set aside for the kids so the planting needs to be safe and tough.T h e C u t t i n g G a r d e n
This is an area set aside for cut flowers. It's based on the book 'Grow your own cut flowers' by Sarah Raven.T h e V e g e t a b l e G a r d e n
This is an area outside the kitchen door, set aside for fruit, vegetables and herbs.T h e W i l d l i f e G a r d e n
This area which has been squeezed by the recent addition of a shed, is set aside as a wildflower area although the rest of the garden is designed to accomodate wildlife as much as possible as well. This is really to support any native species which need specific native plants or flowers.T h e B i t s I n - B e t w e e n
Finally, all the 'themed' areas above have other bits in-between where I just grow anything I want to smooth the transitions.
