Adams, William.  Bronze Clasp   Case 30791

On the 23rd July 1900, Henry Brown, while bathing in the sea at Gorleston, was seized with cramp and swept out 100 yards from shore. W.T.Sievey attempted to save him, but failed. At great risk, Adams swam out and succeeded in saving him.

Allistone, John.  Postman.  Bronze Clasp   Case 31074

On the 17th June 1900, a boy named Davis fell into the Lock cut at Teddington. He had gone under water, when Allistone, at great risk, jumped in, and diving, was able to effect his rescue.

Amilla, Emanuel.  Seaman of Martinique.  Case 30469

On the 16th November 1899, a seaman named Anslyn fell overboard from the schooner Belle Martinquaise, some 10 miles ESE of Balliceaux, West India Islands. There was a heavy squall blowing, and the waters are infested with sharks. At great risk, Amilla jumped after him and kept him afloat, but when picked up Anslyn was dead.

Andrews, Henry.    Case 30732

On the 18th July 1900, James Glynn, while bathing in the Thames at Horselydown, was caught by the current and carried away. At great risk, Andrews, who only has one arm, went in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Anstead, Leonard.  Boy 1st Class HMS Boscawen.  Case 30473

On the 9th December 1899, Frederick Pratt, boy, 2nd class, fell overboard from HMS Boscawen in Portland Roads. The depth was 28 feet, and it was bitterly cold at the time. At great risk, Anstead sprang from one of the ports and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Bacon, Fredk.  Petty Officer HMS Daphne.  Case 30515

On the 5th December 1899, a native boat was run down by HMS Daphne in the Yangtse-Kiang River, China, throwing her crew into the water. There was a strong current and the depth 12 fathoms. Bacon sprang in from the ship, and after being dragged under water succeeded in saving a Chinese boy, the rest of the crew being picked up by native boats.

Ballam, Thomas.  Prison Warder.  Case 30555

On the 24th February 1900, a boy accidentally fell into the Lee at Cork. Ballam, althouth unable to swim, at great risk, sprang in and succeeded in rescuing the lad.

Barnes, Joseph J.  Fireman.    Case 30602

On the 26th March 1900, while the transport Umbria was leaving Queenstown with troops, Private Thompson, Durham Light Infantry, fell overboard. A seaman from HMS Howe jumped in, but became exhausted, and could not save him. Barnes, fireman on the steamer, at great risk, sprang in and rescued both men.

Barrett, R.T.  Lieut.  Case 30645

On the 7th April 1900, Private Chester, Thornycroft’s Mounted Infantry, while watering his horse on the Modder Spruit River, South Africa, got in too far, and both horse and man sank in a deep hole. Barrett plunged in, and was successful in taking him to the bank and landing him.

Barrie, Alfred.  Aged 11.  Case 30467

On the 27th October 1899, Barrie and Wm. Milne, aged 10, were bathing in shallow water on the beach at Colombo, Ceylon, when they were caught by a huge wave and swept into the officers’ bathing place, where the depth was 7 feet. Milne, who could not swim, was supported by Barrie, and with much difficulty taken to the landing and placed in safety.

On the 18th August 1900, A.E.Hatch was bathing at Clacton-on-Sea, when he was carried out into deep water. F.C.Johnson tried to save him, but failed. Barrow then swam out and, at great risk, succeeded in landing him.

Bax, R.N.  Lieut. HMS Cambridge.  Case 31040

On the 21st August 1900, J.Brandon, petty officer of the same ship, owing to the darkness of the night, walked over the quay into the dock basin at Chatham where there was a depth of 30 feet. Bax, at great risk, jumped in and caught Brandon, when a rope was thrown, and they were hauled up.

On the 18th April 1900, T.W.Granger, while at play, fell into the Thames at North Woolwich, and there being a strong tide running he was soon carried out 20 yards from the bank. Bear sprang in and, at great risk, succeeded in landing him in safety.

Beatty, Richard T.  Student.    Case 30520

On the 5th February 1900, W.Devlin fell through the ice on Simmons Lake, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, the depth at the place being 12 feet. At great risk, Beatty crawled out on the thin ice and succeeded in saving the youth.

Beecher, Elsie.  Aged 13.  Case 30547

On the 6th March 1900, Agnes S. Reed, while at play, fell into the canal basin at Cardiff, the depth of water being 22 feet. Floating in the basin, secured by a chain, was a mast-shaped boom, and on to this insecure foothold Beecher went and, at great risk, caught the drowning girl, and kept her above water till further help was given and they were landed in safety.

On the 7th November 1900, Wm. Ivers, A.B. of the same ship, fell into the Hamoaze at Devonport. The tide was very strong, and the depth 50 feet. At great risk, Beer and O’Keefe jumped in, but were unable to effect the rescue, and Ivers was drowned.

Bevan, Wm. H.  Apprentice on Sailing Ship Laomene.  Case 30482

On the 2nd January 1900, a fireman belonging to the SS Duchess of Cornwall fell into the dock at Penarth. The depth was 27 feet and the night dark. At great risk, Bevan jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat came to their assistance.

Bicknell, W.H.T.    Schoolboy.  Case 31013

On the 25th August 1900, a boy named Higgs fell from the pier at East Cowes and was being quickly carried out by the tide. Bicknell, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Blanchard, Job.  Labourer.  Case 30530

On the 24th February 1900, Anna Moore, in an attempt to commit suicide, threw herself into the Itchen at Southampton, the depth being 10 feet and the night very dark. Hearing the splash, Blanchard, at great risk, jumped in and managed to bring her to the bank.

Bligh, William H.  Aged 13.  Case 30710

On the 4th July 1900, John T. Howell accidentally fell into the river Stour at Canterbury. At great risk, Bligh jumped in, and was successful in landing him. The depth at the place was 10 feet.

Brenton, J.  Colour-Sergt. 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.  Case 31011

On the 3rd September 1900, Private J.Hibbert, of the same battalion, was bathing at Candia, Crete, when the strong undercurrent carried him out. At great risk, Brenton swam out, and with difficulty effected his rescue.

Brookes, R.  Draper.  Case 30886

On the 3rd August 1900, W.H.Owen was in a boat which capsized in deep water, at Llandudno. Brookes, at great risk, swam out, and was successful in saving him.

Buckley, John.  Constable RIC.  Case 30508

On the 28th January 1900, Thos. McHale accidentally fell into the river at Balcarra, Co. Mayo, and was being swept away by the strong current. Buckley, at great risk, sprang in, and although both were carried down some 60 yards, succeeded in saving him.

Bury, Ernest.  Petty Officer HMS Victory.  Case 31041

On the 26th October 1900, Thos. E.Hooper accidentally fell into the harbour at Portsmouth, there being a strong tide running at the time. Bury, at great risk, plunged in and rescued him.

Cale, Thomas W.  Letter Carrier.  Case 30531

On the 16th February 1900, a boat, in trying to land from a wrecked vessel, was capsized 140 yards from the shore, at Little Haven, Pembrokeshire. Two of the occupants were carried towards the shore, but the third was being swept away. Cale, at great risk, swam out through the breakers and succeeded in landing him.

Carr, John J.  Fireman.    Case 30684

On the 31st May 1900, W.Gallagher, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Tyne at Gateshead, there being a strong ebb tide, and the depth 12 to 14 feet. At great risk, Carr jumped in from a boat, and having caught him, they were picked up some distance down the river.

On the 30th July 1900, a lad named Banks, while at play, fell from the quay into the Tyne at Newcastle. At great risk, Carr jumped in, caught the lad, and landed him at the steps.

Cartridge, W.C.    Schoolboy aged 13.  Case 30624

On the 25th May 1900, a lad named John Powell accidentally fell into the harbour at Poole, Dorset, the depth of water being 14 feet. At great risk, Cartridge plunged in, and held him up till a canoe came up and they were taken from the water.

Casey, Robert.  Schoolboy aged 11.  Case 30572

On the 17thApril 1900, a boy named Tompkins while fishing fell into the Regent’s Canal at Kingsland Road. Casey, at great risk, plunged in, and was successful in saving him.

Cassidy,    Private.  Case 30623

On the 1st April 1900, Lieut. Findlay, New Zealand Mounted Infantry, in trying to cross the Hartebeest River at Kenhardt, Cape Colony, was washed away by the current. At great risk, Cassidy went to his help, and with much difficulty succeeded in landing him.

On the 1st July 1900, a child fell from the rocks into the Liffey at the Poulaphouca Falls, Co. Wicklow, and was carried into the whirlpool. In order to reach the place, Chambers and Anderson entered the river 70 yards down, and managed to swim up to the pool, which Chambers entered, and recovered the body, but life was extinct. Both men got to a rock near the falls, where they remained for two hours, when Constable Finnegan was let down the cliff, a height of 100 feet, by a rope, and this enabled them to reach the top. Very special risk was incurred by both Chambers and Anderson.

Champion, M.  Constable RIC.  Case 30870

On the 24th July 1900, a boy fell from a boat into the canal at Killaloe, Co. Clare, and was carried into the lock, which was 17 feet deep, with 8 feet of water in it. At great risk, Champion jumped in, and later he was joined by Peter Malone, fisherman, and they succeeded in holding him above water till a boat came and took them up.

On the 29th October 1899, a native, in an attempt to recover a shot bird from the river near Kandia, Crete, became entangled in the weeds in 12 feet of water. Charlton, at great risk, swam out fully clothed and rescued the man.

Chilcott, Charles.  Constable Metropolitan Police.  Case 30730

On the 17th July 1900, Charles Carter fell into the Regent’s Canal at the Cat and Mutton Bridge. Chilcott jumped in and rescued him in an unconscious state, thereafter applying treatment for his restoration.

Chinasami,  Private 26th Madras Infantry.  Case 30668

On the 28th September 1899, a woman while drawing water from a well at Belgaum, Madras, accidentally fell in. The well was circular, 7 feet in diameter, and 29 feet deep, the depth of water being 14 feet. Chinasami jumped in and brought her to the surface, but on being drawn out she was dead.

Hornibrook, Murray.

On the 18th September 1900. Miss Sheill was bathing in the sea at Kilkee, when the current carried her out some 40 yards from shore. At great risk, Christy went out, but was clutched and could not save her. Hornibrook then went out, and at great risk, saved Miss Christy, while Miss Sheill was picked up by a boat.

On the 22nd August 1900, John Kay, an old man of 79, accidentally got into the canal at Skipton. It was midnight, and the depth 8 to 9 feet. At great risk, Clarke jumped in, and after a severe struggle succeeded in saving him.

Cockin, Maurice S.  Student.    Case 30753

On the 13th July 1900, a man, to avoid his boat being run down by a steamer in Rothesay Bay, jumped overboard. At great risk, Cockin sprang from the steamer and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Collier, James.  Master Steam Tug Ada.  Case 30836

On the 13th August 1900, the steam tug Ada was in danger of sinking in the Thames off Grays, through striking some object under water. At great risk, Collier jumped overboard and swam 300 yards to a small boat, with which he returned and rescued four men, the crew of the tug.

On the 24th May 1900, Edward G.Hellings, boatman, in pushing the boat off at Admiral’s Hard, Plymouth, fell overboard. There was a strong tide running, and the depth over 20 feet. Collins, who was on the boat, at once sprang in, and at great risk succeeded in saving him.

On the 4th November 1899, a boat was capsized off the Keyham dockyard extension works at Devonport. The night was dark with a choppy sea, and the depth 15 feet. At great risk, Collam succeeded in saving one man, while Daly made a gallant but unsuccessful attempt to save two others, who were drowned.

On the 28th November 1899, Private H.Figg, of the Royal Fusiliers, was bathing in the Bushman’s River, at Escourt, Natal, when he was carried away by the strong current. At great risk, Connolly plunged in fully clothed and rescued him.

Corkell, Wm.  Fireman.    Case 30599

On the 7th May 1900, W.Riggin, in trying to board a tug in the harbour at Plymouth, missed his footing and fell into water 30 feet deep 100 yards from shore. At great risk, Corkell jumped from the tug, and with great difficulty brought him back to the vessel.

On the 16th January 1900, Corpl. J Carr, of the same battalion, was carried away by the current while crossing the Tugela River in South Africa. At great risk, Cousins swam out and succeeded in saving him.

Craggs, Percy B.    Engineer.  Case 30617

On the 28th May 1900, a sailor fell overboard from his vessel in the Tees at Middlesbrough. The depth was 20 feet and a strong tide running. At great risk, Craggs swam out from the bank and succeeded in saving the man.

Craig, Geo.  Bronze Clasp   Case 31067

On the 16th November 1900, a woman named Jane Clift, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Tyne at Newcastle. The depth at the time was 17 feet. At great risk, Craig jumped in from a height of 20 feet, caught the woman, and succeeded in saving her, after which J.H.Walton used means for her restoration.

On the 18th May 1900, G.F.Mayo, while fishing, accidentally fell into the Firth of Tay at Broughty Ferry. There was a strong ebb tide, and the depth 14 feet. Darling, at great risk, jumped in and managed to save the lad.

David, Eugene C.    Case 31073

On the 8th December 1900, an English lady named Salusbury (sic), was swept into the Seine at Sahiers, France, by the rapidly rising tide. At great risk, David went in, and with great difficulty managed to bring her to the bank.

On the 10th October 1900, John Clark, while bathing at St Peter Port, Guernsey, could not regain the beach, owing to the heavy sea. At great risk, de Jausserand swam out, and after a struggle lasting 20 minutes, was able to bring him in much exhausted.

On the 4th March 1900, G.Perry fell into the Thames at Woolwich. At the risk of being crushed against the pier by the swaying barge, Dinniss plunged in and rescued him.

Tomlinson, Fred.

On the 22nd July 1900, Harold Brown, aged five years, fell into the canal at Burnley, and was carried into the Gannow Tunnel. At great risk, Draper and Tomlinson swam down the tunnel for 30 yards, found him, and brought him back, but life was extinct.

On the 26th February 1900, a man named Campling, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Ouse at Bedford. The river was in high flood and running strong. Duberly plunged in and, at great risk, succeeded in saving him.

Dugmore, E.V.F.R.  Lieut. HMS Pelorus.  Case 31053

On the 14th November 1900, Private G.H.Clarke, RMLI, fell into the South Basin at Keyham. The night was dark, the water bitterly cold, and 24 feet deep. At great risk, Dugmore jumped in, caught Clarke, and was successful in saving him.

Dumbleton, J.T.    Police Constable.    Case 31009

On the 23rd July 1900, Dumbleton, in going his rounds at Greet, near Birmingham, noticed an unusual smell of gas, and finding this came from a house, he placed his lamp in the roadway, and forcing the door, rescued a man and a woman who had been rendered unconscious. He then re-entered the house and found the gas had been left full on in a lower room, and this he at once put right, thereby averting what might have been a double fatality.

On the 19th May 1900, a woman, on landing from a steamer at Diamond Harbour, near Calcutta, fell into the river. The night was dark, an ebb tide running, and the river infested with crocodiles. At great risk, Dundas jumped in, and was able to rescue the woman.

On the 7th August 1900, E.S.F.Webb, while bathing in Poldhu Cove, Cornwall, was carried out by the rough sea. At great risk, Ellington swam out, and after a hard struggle succeeded in saving him.

On the 27th July 1900, F.H.Hemming, while bathing in the sea at Salterton, South Devon, was carried out some 30 yards by the current. Ellis, at great risk, swam out and rescued him in an unconscious state.

Evans, R.  Sapper Royal Monmouth R.E. (Mil.).  Case 30609

On the 21st May 1900, Sapper J.Barrett, of the same regiment, fell from the military bridge into the river Monnow at Monmouth. The night was dark and the depth 18 feet. At great risk, Evans jumped in, and succeeded in saving him.

On the 19th July 1900, W.Turner, while bathing in the Avon at Rugby, got into deep water. At great risk, Fawcett jumped in and succeeded in saving him after he had gone under twice.

Fayle, Robert.  Seaman.    Case 30490

On the 16th December 1899, Geo. Blackburn, in going ashore from the SS Snaefell, at Douglas, Isle of Man, walked over the end of the gangway, which had been partly drawn on board. The depth of water was 7 feet, with a strong ebb tide running. At great risk, Fayle jumped in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 4th May 1900, H.P.Fisher fell from the rocks into the sea at Maidencombe, Torquay. Fenton entered the water and succeeded in saving him.

Gallagher, John.    Chief Officer SS Mars.  Case 30481

On the 31st December 1899, Wm. Allan, in going ashore from the SS Mars, fell into the dock at Leith. The night was dark and stormy, and the depth 25 feet. Gallagher at once sprang in, and having caught Allan, a rope was sent down, which he got round him. On being pulled up the rope parted and Allan again fell down. Gallagher now supported him till a stronger rope was got and he was pulled up.

On the 16th August 1900, W.Cornfield accidentally fell into the river Thames near the free ferry at Woolwich. At great risk, Goss jumped in and succeeded in swimming with him to the landing.

Grant, D.H.  Labourer.  Case 30697

On the 11th June 1900, an engine and truck left the rails and fell into the canal in the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, Harry Cogger, the driver, being struck on the head and rendered unconscious. Canal 45 feet wide and 15 feet deep. At great risk, Grant jumped in, and after diving several times, succeeded in finding Cogger, and landing him.

Gregory, John.  Natal Ambulance Corps.  Case 30998

On the 11th October 1899, G.P.Dutton, while bathing in the sea at Durban, South Africa, became exhausted and was unable to land. There was a heavy surf, and the locality abounds with sharks. J.Hawksley tried to save him, but also got into difficulty. Gregory then went out, and at great risk rescued Hawksley, but Dutton drowned.

Gummersall, B.    Builder.  Case 30764

On the 12th July 1900, owing to heavy rain, some houses became flooded at Ilkley, Yorkshire. At great risk, Gummersall, with a rope round him, crossed the torrent, and rescued an old man and woman who were in danger of drowning in one of the houses.

Hadow, Ronald.    Cadet Royal Military College Camberley.  Case 30990

On the 6th August 1900, Mrs S. Surtees fell from a boat into 27 feet of water in the Thames at Maidenhead. At great risk, Hadow jumped in, and was able to get her on board a boat.

Hanlan, Joseph.    RNR.  Case 30928

On the 14th September 1900, Thomas Smith, labourer, while carrying coal on board a vessel, fell into the Boyne at Drogheda. The depth at the time was 20 feet. At great risk, Hanlan jumped in, and diving, caught Smith and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 29th April 1900, a boy named Stead accidentally fell into the moat at Sheerness, the depth being 12 feet and no means of landing. At great risk, Harper jumped in and with the boy managed to reach the wall, where he was assisted from the water.

On the 4th June 1900, W.C.Banbury, petty officer, HMS Europa, fell overboard at Albany, West Australia. At great personal risk, Hawksbee sprang in, and succeeded in saving him.

Haynes, Joseph G.  Nurseryman.  Case 30975

On the 29th July 1900, two men named Shore and Wakefield, while bathing in the Thames at Ham, got into a deep hole 10 yards from the bank. Haynes, at great risk, dived in, but was unable to find them in the weeds, and they were drowned.

Headlam, E.J.  Lieut. Royal Indian Marine.  Case 31078

On the 14th October 1900, Kan Singh, a sepoy, in trying to pass from one vessel to another at Taku, China, fell in between them, and was in danger of being crushed or drowned. At great risk, Headlam jumped in, and was able to save the man.

Hinks, H.  Private 2nd Bn. Royal Scots Fusiliers.  Case 30566

On the 28th November 1899, Private Dawson, of the same battalion, was bathing in the Bushmans River at Escort, Natal, and got into deep water. Hinks went in and, at great risk, attempted to save him but failed, and Dawson was drowned.

Hodgkinson, Geo.    Case 30872

On the 29th July 1900, J.F.Morrod, aged 60, fell into 20 feet of water in the harbour at Hull. Hodgkinson, at great risk, jumped in from a height of 20 feet, and succeeded in saving him in an unconscious state. G E Dack and G.Stone used artificial means, and he was successfully restored.

Hoggart, John.  Postman.  Case 31034

On the 10th October 1900, a girl, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Tay at Perth. There was a strong current running at the time. Hoggart, at great risk, jumped in, and with difficulty succeeded in saving her.

Holmes, Thomas.  SS Wazzen.  Case 30620

On the 10th May 1900, a fireman belonging to the same vessel fell into St Katherine’s Dock. The night was dark, depth 25 feet, and danger of being crushed against the quay wall. At great risk, Holmes jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 11th January 1900, Corporal Barkley, South African Light Horse, while trying to swim across the Tugela, took cramp, and was carried away by the strong current. At great risk, they being under fire at the time, Howell plunged in, and having caught him managed to reach the bank in safety.

Jackson, A.P.  3rd Officer.  Case 31021

On the 25th September 1900, while the hired transport Mohawk was at Shanghai, China, four men were overcome by foul gas, which had accumulated in the hold of the ship. Jackson went down and succeeded in sending up all the men; but three of them succumbed to the effects of the gas. F.J.Languedoc, A.H.Stapleton, and Charles Taylor, all belonging to the ship, at personal risk, attempted the rescue, but failed.

On the 11th August 1900, Thomas Jones, while bathing in the sea at Caister, got into difficulty and was unable to regain the beach. At great risk, Jaffrey swam out and was successful in saving him.

On the 16th September 1900, J.J.Le Roux, the son of a local burgher, by holding on to the tail of a horse, was carried out some 25 yards from the bank in a pond at Roodevval Spruit, Orange River Colony. Seeing his danger, Jones and Day, who were bathing near, at once swam out, and at great risk rescued him.

On the 12th August 1900, a boat with four men on board was capsized in the Shannon at Meelick, Co. Galway. One man reached the bank unaided. Kelleher took the second man from a rock in the river and then returned for the third man, who was sinking, and at great risk swam with him to the bank.

On the 6th September 1900, several youths were in a boat which capsized in the bay at Peterhead. One of them, named Walker, was held under water, his clothing having got entangled in one of the rowlocks. At great risk, Laing dived, and at the third attempt managed to liberate him, and he was saved.

On the 23rd August 1900, a boy named Walmsley fell overboard from the Training-ship Clio at Bangor, North Wales. There was a strong tide running at the time. Langdon was roused from his bed, and on going on deck, at once jumped after him, and held him up till they were taken on board a small boat.

On the 26th December 1899, two boys named Jacobs fell into the Trent at Nottingham, there being 20 feet of water and a strong tide running. At great risk, Langford sprang in and rescued the younger lad. Again going in, he managed with much difficulty to save the second boy

On the 3rd December 1899, while the SS Saxoliene of Newcastle was in mid-Atlantic, the second engineer entered the pump room, intending to pump out a quantity of crude petroleum which had leaked in, when he was rendered unconscious by the fumes and fell down into the oil. Larsen, seeing what had occurred at once went down, and, at great risk, managed to bring him on deck, when he himself became insensible from inhaling the deadly vapour.

On the 6th August 1900, Ah King, a Chinese, fell from a junk into the Peiho river, China. The night was dark and a strong tide running. At great risk, Layard jumped in, and after a struggle was able to rescue the man.

On the 30th June 1900, John Gore, aged 5, fell into the Holly Brook at Reading, and was carried under the bridge and down the stream a distance of 37 yards. At great risk, Loynes swam after him and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 22nd June 1900, a young lady, while bathing in the sea at Killinney, Co. Dublin, was seized with cramp some 30 yards from shore. At great risk, Lyon swam out and succeeded in saving her.

On the 27th November 1899, the 2nd engineer of the SS Joseph Scicluna fell into the harbour at Palermo. Magri, at great personal risk, jumped in, and after diving, was successful in saving him.

On the 23rd July 1900, C.Mattinson jumped from the ferry-boat when in mid-river in the Tyne at North Shields. Mansforth, who was on the boat, at great risk, followed him and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 19th April 1900, a woman fell from the ferry-boat into the Mahawilaganga River, near Kandy, Ceylon. The river is some 40 feet deep, and runs with a strong current. At great risk, Marikar swam out and was successful in rescuing her.

On the 20th April 1900, T.Conneely, stoker HMS Thetis, fell from the ship into Durban Harbour. The depth was 21 feet, and the locality abounds with sharks. Martin, at great risk, sprang overboard, and was able to support him till a rope was got, and he was pulled on board.

On the 18th December 1899, a boy named Griffin, belonging to the training ship Mercury, fell from a boat into the Hamble, at Southampton. There was a strong ebb tide, and the depth 3 fathoms. At great risk, Matthews, who was a patient on the hospital ship, sprang in, and caught Griffin, swam with him to the Mercury.

On the 20th December 1899, Angus McKay, in crossing the lake at Wilson Parry Sound District, Ontario, Canada, fell through the ice 50 yards from the bank, the depth of water being 20 feet. At great risk, McDonald crawled out on the insecure ice and managed to rescue McKay

On the 10th July 1900, W.H.Martin got into deep water while bathing at Kilkee, Co.Clare. At great risk, McLeod swam out and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 23rd September 1900, James Smart fell overboard from the SS Chevalier in the harbour at Oban. The night was pitch dark, and the water deep. McVean, who was in bed at the time, rushed on deck, and at great risk, jumped overboard and held him up till a rope was got and they were rescued.

On the 25th July 1900, while the steamer Bonnie Dundee was in the Firth of Tay, 800yards from shore, a man named Lowe and his infant son fell overboard. At great risk, Millan jumped from the steamer and saved the child, but the father was drowned.

On the 25th September 1900, a Chinese girl jumped from a boat into the Peiho River, at Tientsin, China. There was a strong current, and the night dark. Mockler, at great risk, jumped in, caught the girl, and swam with her to the bank.

On the 13th July 1900, two girls accidentally fell from a jetty into the Dee at Aberdeen. There was a strong current, and the depth 15 feet. At great risk, Morrice plunged in, and at considerable risk succeeded in saving them.

On the 13th December 1899, Private W.Cooper, Somerset Light Infantry, fell overboard from the SS Majestic, when leaving Liverpool for South Africa. Morris at once sprang in and, at great risk, supported Cooper till they were picked up.

On the 20th March 1900, Mr Gorton, in crossing the Fitzroy river in the Falkland Islands, was with his horse swept away by the stream. Morrison, who had crossed, swam his horse back into the river to render assistance, but Mr Gorton had gained the bank unaided.

On the 23rd May 1900, a boat with four persons on board was capsized in the Dee at Aberdeen. Two of these managed to hold on to the boat, one was carried away and drowned, while the fourth, Mary Bennett, sank in 12 to 15 feet of water. At great risk, Morrison jumped in from a boat, and diving was successful in finding and taking her to the bank.

On the 9th June 1900, Gunner F.J.White RGA, while trying to secure a rope which had been thrown him from the garrison launch, fell from the pier at Spike Island, Cork harbour. Morrison at once sprang in from the launch, and at great risk kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 20th December 1899, a boy named Hope fell through the ice on a pond at Moorside, near Swinton, Lancashire. At great risk, Morton went to his help, put was pulled in, and narrowly escaped with his own life, Hope was drowned.

On the 31st January 1900, Private F.Bartley, 16th Lancers, was bathing in the Modder River, South Africa, and got into difficulties. Private Bryant and Lance-Corporal Priest swam out, but were unable to save him. Mosley then swam out and managed to bring Bartley to the bank.

On the 15th September 1900, a man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Liffey at Dublin. Two other men then went in to try and save him, but failed, and themselves got into difficulties. Musgrave, at great risk, then jumped in and rescued the three men.

On the 7th May 1900, Richard Elliott accidentally fell into the Ribble at Walton-le-Dale, the depth being 9 feet with strong tide. At great risk, Naylor jumped in, and was successful in rescuing him.

On the 10th August 1900, Mrs O.M.Vicary, of Carrick-on-Suir, was bathing at Kilkee, Co. Clare, when she got into deep water. A friend tried to save her but failed. O’Callaghan, at great risk, swam out, and was successful in bringing her to shore in an unconscious state.

On the 8th November 1900, John Sherburn, while at work on a new jetty at Blackpool, fell into the sea, which was then very rough. At great risk, O’Connell jumped in, and after a swim of 30 yards reached him, and held his head above water; but the strong tide carried them a quarter of a mile from the jetty before the boat which is kept in attendance could pick them up, and Sherburn was then dead.

On the 28th November 1899, a private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers sank in 20 feet of water while bathing in the Bushman’s River, at Escourt, Natal. O’Connor made a daring attempt to save him but failed. On the same day Sergt. Bennett, of the Royal Fusiliers, also sank while bathing. Again O’Connor dived, but could not find him, and he also drowned.

On the 9th February 1900, J.Murphy fell through the ice on the Grand Canal, Dublin, near Harold’s Cross Bridge. He was 14 yards from the bank and the depth 12 feet. O’Donnell, at great risk, jumped in, and by breaking the ice was able to bring him to the bank.

On the 24th July 1900, a boy fell into the Melbourne Pool at Melbourne, Derbyshire. There was 8 feet of water, and 3 to 4 feet of mud. Parsons jumped in, and at great risk, rescued him in an unconscious state. Frank Parsons successfully restored him.

On the 17th September 1900, Private J.Cook, RMLI, in an attempt at suicide, jumped overboard from HMS Benbow in the Clyde off Greenock. There was a strong tide running at the time. Parsons, at great risk, went after him, and after a violent struggle, kept him afloat till further help was given, and they were taken on board.

On the 22nd February 1900, a boy named Brooks fell into the Avon at Bath. The river was in high flood and very dangerous. At great risk, Payton jumped in, and after a hard struggle succeeded in landing the lad.

On the 3rd August 1900, a man went down a well 48 feet deep at Cretingham, Suffolk, when he was overcome by foul gas, which had accumulated. Several men were present, but none would venture down. Pretty, therefore, went down and tried to rouse him, but life was extinct. Great risk of being suffocated was incurred.

On the 29th July 1900, A.Patterson was bathing in the sea at Roker, Sunderland, when the strong backwash prevented him from reaching the shore. At great risk, Punshon swam out, but in spite of his utmost efforts could not effect the rescue, and Patterson drowned.

On the 15th August 1900, Clifford and Ethel Hobson, in trying to land from a small boat, fell into the harbour at Bridlington. The night was dark, and the depth 9 feet. Raddings, at great risk, jumped in, and succeeded in saving both, the girl being unconscious.

On the 18th August 1900, Miss E.Bennetts got out of her depth while bathing in the Gatineau river near Ottawa, Canada. H.W.Lothrop went to her help, but also got into difficulty. Routh then went in, and at great risk saved the girl. Again going in, he caught Lothrop, and with some assistance from Miss Nellie Hayes, rescued him.

On the 14th May 1900, Sapper Munkley fell from the military bridge into the Monnow at Monmouth. The night was dark and the depth 18 feet. At great risk, Ryan jumped in, and was able to bring him to the bank.

On the 24th January 1900, a little boy fell into a deep and dangerous pond at Sunderland, the water being in a very foul and poisonous state. At great risk, Sanderson dived in, and finding the lad landed him in an unconscious state.

On the 19th October 1900, F.W.Wright, while at work on HMS Implacable, fell into 40 feet of water at Devonport. Sargeant, at great risk, jumped in from a height of 30 feet, and a rope being thrown they were taken on board a launch.

On the 15th December 1899, a woman named Emma Renkin, a refugee from Johannesburg, threw herself into the sea from the jetty at Port Elizabeth. There was a gale blowing and the water infested with sharks. Searle, at great risk, plunged in, and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 23rd December 1899, the whale-boat belonging to HMS Dwarf was capsized at the entrance to the Limpopo River, East Africa. They were three miles from the ship, the surf being heavy and numerous sharks in the locality. All but one got on the keel of the boat, the exception being a seaman named Harradon, who seemed to loose his head. Shakespear and Clemesha three times brought him back to the boat after being washed off, but in spite of their efforts he was dead when they were picked up.

On the 7th September 1900, Ernest M.Grover, while fishing from the rocks at Ilfracombe, fell into 12 feet of water. Shapland, at great risk, swam out, and with considerable difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 9th June 1900, a small boat was capsized in mid-channel in the Firth of Clyde off Gourock. Sharp was on a passenger steamer coming up the river, and he at great risk sprang overboard and rescued a man named Kay, keeping him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 17th August 1900, Ellen Hogan fell overboard from a boat in the Shannon at Limerick. There was an ebb tide, the depth 12 feet, and 100 yards from the bank. Sheedy jumped in from the bank, swam out, caught the girl, and at great risk succeeded in bringing her in.

On the 14th August 1900, Henry Havens, while bathing in the sea at Mudeford, Hants, was swept out by the current, and could not regain the beach. At great risk, Shelton swam out, and was successful in saving him.

On the 27th October 1900, a man named Crowley, in attempting to go on board the SS Granuiale at Killybegs, Co. Donegal, fell in between the vessel and the quay. At great risk, Sherlock went in and supported him till ropes were got and they were hauled up.

On the 22nd December 1899, two men went down into an underground chamber at Bolton for the purpose of removing an electrical transformer, when the wrong switch was accidentally turned, and the place became alive with electricity and filled with poisonous fumes, rendering both men unconscious. At great risk, Sides was lowered down, and managed to take both men to the surface, where they died soon after.

On the 18th October 1899, a native boat, with two men on board, was overturned in the Brahmapootra River at Sadiya in Assam, the depth being 15 feet, with a strong current. Singh remained by his comrade, a sepoy, who could not swim, and after a hard struggle succeeded in landing him.

On the 20th August 1900, Stanley Hooper, while bathing in the sea at Sidmouth, was carried out and went under water. At great risk, Solomon went to his help, and was successful in effecting his rescue.

On the 19th September 1900, W.Ellerington was accidentally knocked overboard from a small yacht about three quarters of a mile from shore at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. At great risk, Southern jumped from the yacht, and supported him till they were picked up by a small boat.

On the 13th August 1900, a little girl accidentally fell into the river at Tullamore, and was carried away by the strong current then running. At great risk, Spillane jumped in, swam across, ran 50 yards, and again jumping in, was successful in saving her.

On the 30th December 1899, a woman named Joyce stumbled over some loose stones and fell into the harbour at Fraserburgh. The night was dark and the depth of water 9 feet. Stewart, although unable to swim, took a lifebuoy and jumping in kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat, but on being landed life was extinct.

On the 10th August 1900, three men were in a boat which capsized on Lake Victoria, Nyassa, Central Africa. The lake abounds with crocodiles. One of the men held on to the upturned boat; the second man, Hassan, tried to swim to land, but became exhausted; the third man, Sugulye, went to his help and took him to land; he then returned in a leaky canoe, and saved the man from the bottom of the boat.

Swinburne, John.  Fruit Grower.  Case 30883

On the 7th August 1900, the Rev. R.Spittal was bathing in Vazon Bay, Guernsey, and could not regain the beach. At great risk, Swinburne went out, but was unable to bring him in; both men, after being washed about for some time, were thrown on shore by the waves and saved.

On the 14th August 1900, Anna Streicher, governess, became exhausted 50 yards from shore in the sea at North Berwick. Thorburn, at great risk, swam out, and was successful in landing her in safety.

On the 19th July 1900, a boy, while at play, fell into the sea at Cromer. Thorne, at great risk, jumped in, and with some difficulty rescued him.

On the 30th July 1900, two lads were on a raft which sank about 100 yards from shore at Blackness, Linlithgow. At great risk, Tomney swam out to where they were, and supported them till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 23rd January 1900, Private J.Bannard, of the Hampshire regiment, fell overboard from the SS Assaye in the harbour at Cape Town. Townshead plunged in, but although he dived several times Bannard could not be found and was drowned.

Turner, G.T.  Constable.  Case 30861

On the 21st August 1900, Constable Meadows, Metropolitan Police, was in a boat on the Thames at Putney. When some 50 yards from the bank the boat capsized. Turner, who was also in a boat, jumped into the river, caught Meadows, and swam with him to the bank.

Voase, Alfred E.      Case 30832

On the 8th August 1900, a boat with three persons on board was swept over the weir in the river Wharfe at Wetherby. The river was in flood, with a strong and dangerous current running. At great risk, Voase went in and succeeded in saving a woman. Joseph Lister, at personal risk, rescued a boy. Robert Wilson, police constable, at personal risk, attempted to assist in these rescues. Henry Stubbs recovered the body of the third person, who was drowned.

On the 20th May 1900, John Good threw himself into the Clyde at Glasgow. The depth was 16 feet 50 yards from the bank, and the water very foul. Edward McKenna, at great risk, went in, but was clutched by Good and became exhausted. Walsh went in at very great risk and rescued McKenna, but Good was drowned.

On the 27th August 1900, a German waiter, while bathing in the sea at Cromer, could not regain the shore, and called for help. At great risk, Wansbrough swam out with a line, which he placed round the man, and he was drawn in.

On the 1st September 1900, Tom Bryant fell from the rocks into the sea at Ilfracombe, and the strong current was quickly carrying him out. At great risk, Warren swam out, and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 16th April 1900, Peter Haslin, boy, 2nd class, HMS Caledonia, fell overboard in the Forth at So, Queensferry. There was a heavy sea, and the depth 12 to 16 fathoms. Wendt sprang in, but could not effect the rescue. Hopkins then jumped in, and between them they, at great risk, managed to save the boy.

On the 27th February 1900, an old, mentally afflicted women fell into the river at Ebley, near Stroud, and was seen floating down in mid-stream. Whitmore sprang in and was successful in bringing her to the bank, where he at once used his knowledge of resuscitation and restored her.

Williams, W.  Private.  Case 30892

On the 8th September 1900, Private B.Flewitt, of the Rifle Brigade, was bathing at Southsea, when he threw up his arms and sank 50 to 60 yards from shore. The place is dangerous owing to a strong undercurrent. At great risk, Williams swam out and dived three times, but failed to find him.

On the 24th July 1900, Miss L.L.Green, who cannot swim, got into 8 to 10 feet of water while bathing in the sea at Goodrington. At great risk, Wilson swam out to her help, and was able to effect her rescue.

On the 6th January 1900, 2nd Lieut. A.R.Harman, Rifle Brigade, in an attempt to cross the Klip River at Ladysmith, was swept away by the current. Wilson plunged in and managed to effect the rescue.

On the 29th July 1900, a girl fell from the rocks into the sea at Kinsale, and was carried into deep water. At great risk, Wood swam out and succeeded in bringing her in, in an unconscious state.

On the 2nd May 1900, Private W.Russell, of the same battalion, while washing at Elandslaagte, Natal, slipped and fell into the stream, which was muddy and full of weeds with steep banks. Woodley, at great risk, dived in, and at the third attempt caught him and rescued him.

On the 4th September 1900, Harold Spencer fell into the harbour at Scarborough. Worth, J.T.Blewitt, and T.Matthews, Cornish fishermen, jumped in from their boats, and Worth, reaching the lad first, succeeded in saving him.

On the 15th August 1900, two children named Wells were paddling on the marsh, and stepped over the river wall into the Colne at Alresford, near Colchester. At great risk, Wringe went in and succeeded in saving both children in an exhausted state.

On the 1st September 1900, Mrs Allison accidentally fell into the Forth at Granton. The night was dark, and the depth 20 feet. Young, at great risk, jumped in, and succeeded in saving her.
