Abraham, John.  Groom.  Case 32049

On the 6th July 1902, Wm.Gleeson got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Booterstown, Co.Dublin. Abraham, at great risk, swam out and succeeded in saving him in an unconscious state. Shortly after this Abraham also rescued another bather.

Alton, James.  Aged 14.  Case 31933

On the 16th February 1902, a girl fell through the ice on a pond at Ripley, Derbyshire. The break took place 10 yards from the bank, the depth being 6 feet. Alton went to her help and, at the third attempt, succeeded in rescuing her.

Anderson, Alexander.  Tramway Stoker.  Case 31869

On the 15th February 1902, four boys were sliding on the ice on the Grand Canal, Dublin, when a breakage took place and they all fell in. At great risk, Anderson went in and managed to effect their rescue. In order to reach the fourth boy Anderson had to swim, and at the same time break the ice in front of him.

On the 25th June 1902, Samuel Taylor fell into the Tyne at Newcastle. The water was very foul, 14 feet deep, and the tide running strong. At great risk, Appleby sprang in, fully clothed, and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Atkins, John.  Horse Driver.  Case 31889

On the 31st March 1902, Wm. Dadford, aged 6, accidentally fell into 10 feet of water in the Nene, at Northampton. Bertram Osbond, aged 9, and Dennis Petchell, aged 7, went in to try and save him, but were unable to do so. Atkins, at great risk, went in, and was successful in saving Dadford and Osbond, but Petchell was drowned.

On the 3rd February 1902, Edward Clough, aged 8, fell through the ice on a pond at Baildon, near Shipley, Yorks. The break took place 5 yards from the bank in deep water. At great risk, Badland went in and was successful in saving him.

Baikie, James.  Case 31856

On the 20th February 1902, a fisherman accidentally fell overboard from the fishing boat Clara off Cape Wrath. At great risk, Baikie went after him with a line and, after a swim of 50 yards, caught him, and they were hauled on board.

On the 9th July 1902, a youth fell from a canoe outside the harbour at Roundstone, Co.Galway. Barrett swam out and supported him till they were picked up.

Bartleman, W.A.R.  Corporal.  Case 31927

On the 28th January 1902, Trooper F.H.Sharpe, South African Constabulary, was bathing in the Tempe Dam, near Bloemfontein, when he became weak, and sank in 9 feet of water, 25 yards from the bank. Bartleman, at great risk, swam out, but was clutched, and had to release his hold, and Sharpe was drowned.

On the 28th July 1902, a woman fell into the dock basin at Limerick. The depth was 17 feet, and no means of getting out, the basin being walled. At great risk, Bee and Megson jumped in, and with much difficulty were able to keep her afloat till picked up by a boat.

On the 24th July 1902, C.J.Scarborough was bathing in a creek at Freiston, on the Lincolnshire coast, when he was carried away by the tide. Best, at great risk, swam out, but was clutched, and becoming exhausted failed to save him, and he was drowned.

On the 16th September 1901, two men went into a tank at Machin, Bombay, for the purpose of gathering flowers, and got into danger in 10 feet of water 20 yards from the side. At great risk, Bhikaji went in and succeeded in saving both men.

In February 1900, Inkupo, a native porter employed with the Daily Telegraph Cape to Cairo expedition, in trying to cross a swollen stream in Central Africa, was swept away and became entangled in the  bris of a broken bridge in mid-stream. bin Hamiss, at great risk, swam out and managed to effect his rescue.

On the 14th January 1902, three soldiers were on an ice sledge on the Peiho River, China, when the ice broke and all were immersed. Bollen, who was one of the three, at great risk succeeded in rescuing one of his comrades, the other being swept away and lost.

On the 2nd June 1902, a girl named Elspeth Hughes fell into a pond at Slinfold, Sussex. Her governess, Miss M.Hallett, went in to try and save her, but was unfortunately drowned. Miss Boniface then went in and, at great risk, was able to rescue the girl.

Bostan, Constable Lahore Police.  Case 31823

On the 21st September 1901, a man in trying to avoid being arrested jumped down a well 54 feet deep with 30 feet of water in it, at Mian Mir, India. At great risk, Bostan went down and, after a severe struggle, was able to rescue him.

Bowden, Wm.  Case 32410

On the 14th October 1902, John E.P.Bowden, while in a fit, fell overboard from his fishing-boat outside the harbour at Looe, Cornwall, the sea being rough at the time. Wm. Bowden, his brother, at once jumped after him and supported him till they were picked up five minutes after.

On the 11th February 1902, a youth named M’Geough fell through the ice on the lake at Ballybay, Co. Monaghan. The break took place 30 yards from the bank, the depth of water being 20 feet. At great risk, Boylan crawled out on the thin ice and held his coat out to the lad, who grasped it, and in this way was rescued from his perilous position.

On the 8th April 1901, Miss R.C.Ellis, in trying to save some children from the Breede River at Worcester, Cape Colony, got into a hole in which there was 20 feet of water. Brinsley, at great risk, swam out and, after a severe struggle, was able to land her. Three children were drowned.

On the 3rd June 1902, Wm. Davis fell from the topsail-yard of his ship into the dock at Swansea. Seeing he was injured by the fall, Brooks swam to were he was and supported him till a boat came and picked them up. Davis died the same night.

On the 26th September 1902, Miss F.Adair, while bathing from the beach at casablanca, Morocco, was swept out by the strong under-current, the sea being very rough. At great risk, Broome swam out and, with much difficulty, effected her rescue.

Brown, William.  Boatman.  Case 32166

On the 25th July 1902, a man named Griffiths swam out 30 yards in the harbour at Torquay and sank. Another went out to try and save him, but also got into danger. At great risk, Brown, aged 62, swam out and got them back to the wall, where he supported them till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 17th March 1902, a little boy tripped over a rope and fell from the quay into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth at the time being 20 feet. Brown gallantly jumped in, and succeeded in swimming with him to the landing.

On the 15th February 1902, A.C. Layton, while at work, fell into 24 feet of water in the dock at Southampton, the night being very dark and very cold. Carmichael plunged in and, at great risk, was successful in rescuing him.

On the 10th August 1902, a boy named Anderson, while at play, fell into 18 feet of water in the Tyne at Newcastle. At great risk, Carr jumped in, fully clothed, caught the lad, and swam with him to the landing. This is the 27th life saved by Carr.

On the 8th July 1902, a youth named Fish fell into the Thames at Southwark, where he sank under a barge in 10 feet of water. Carter, at great risk, swam out and, diving, found the lad and rescued him.

Cave, Arthur.  Butcher.  Case 31945

On the 5th May 1902, Thos. Sewell fell into the Trent at Gainsborough. The tidal bore had just passed, and he was soon carried out 40 yards into 15 feet of water. At great risk, Cave swam out and supported him till they were picked up by a boat in an exhausted state.

Cheeseman, James.  Petty Officer HMS St.Vincent.  Case 31772

On the 1st December 1901, the whaler belonging to HMS St.Vincent was run down by a launch off Gosport. The night was dark and the depth 6 fathoms. Cheeseman caught the nurse who was on board and supported her till they were picked up by a boat from shore.

On the 30th March 1902, a Kaffir, in attempting to cross the Wilge River, Orange River Colony, was with his horse swept away by the strong current. Clifford, at great risk, went in and, with difficulty, succeeded in saving him.

On the 22nd January 1902, the landlord of an inn at Stourbridge on going into his cellar was struck down by carbolic acid gas given off by some fermenting beer. His wife went to look for him and was also struck down, as were four men who went in one after the other to give help. There now being six persons in a heap on the floor, Cooper and Fitzer were called, and they, at great risk, burst open the door and were able to rescue all the unconscious persons, and also adopted means for their restoration.

On the 18th July 1902, during the progress of a typhoon at Kowloon, Hong Kong, the sea being rough, Counsell was successful in rescuing five persons who were in imminent danger of drowning.

On the 25th July 1902, David Flett fell from the end of the east pier at Findochty, Banff, there being a strong tide running at the time. Craib, at great risk, jumped from the west pier, swam across the channel, and rescued the lad.

On the 9th May 1902, Reginald Ball fell from the quay into 12 feet of water at Kingsbridge, Devon. At great risk, Cruse plunged in and rescued him.

On the 27th January 1902, two men got into danger in the sea at East London, South Africa. There was a strong tide running out, and the sea rough. At great risk, Cumming swam out and succeeded in saving both men.

On the 26th December 1901, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into a tank at Dhobi Talao, Bombay. The depth of water was 10 feet, and the tank is enclosed by a wall 15 feet above the surface of the water, so that it was impossible to get out. Dr. Dàlal jumped in and, at great risk, kept her afloat till ropes were got, and they were drawn up.

On the 7th October 1901, a boy, aged 5, fell into the sea from the dangerous rocks at Fayal Azores. Hearing his cries, Mrs Dart ran to the place, and, at great risk, plunged in, brought him out, but he unfortunately did not recover.

On the 22nd March 1901, the SS Taber, in attempting to enter the harbour at Port Louis, Mauritius, was wrecked on Barkly Island. There was a tremendous sea running at the time. Davidson, Dawood, Ismail, Pandea, Mohedeen and Alfoo, at great risk, rendered service in saving or attempting to save life, while sixteen other men assisted in a lesser degree.

On the 18th August 1902, three men were bathing in the rough sea at Barmouth, North Wales, when they got into difficulty. At great risk, Hugh and Evan Davies went out and were successful in saving them.

On the 10th March 1902, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into 20 feet of water in the river at Yarmouth. Davies, whose vessel was lying near, plunged in and succeeded in saving her.

Dawson, James J.  The Rev. Father.  Case 31796

On the 23rd December 1901, Edgar Barfoot, aged 11, fell through the ice on the Black Loch at Oban. The accident took place 20 yards from the bank in deep water. Dawson crawled along the ice, which then gave way, and he also fell in, but holding on to the lad he managed to break his way to the bank, being then in an exhausted state.

On the 2nd June 1902, two men named Harding and Collier were in a small boat which capsized in the rough sea at Whitby. Doughty swam out to their help, but became exhausted and was also in danger. Howard, T.M.Wale and W.Affleck swam out, and in the end succeeded in saving all three.

On the 24th April 1902, Frank Walls fell into the Ouseburn at Newcastle, and was in danger of drowning. At great risk, Doyle, who is unable to swim, jumped in and, with the aid of some floating timber, rescued him.

On the 7th December 1901, a man fell from the quay into the Ouseburn at Newcastle, the depth being 10 feet with a strong ebb tide. At great risk, Drane jumped in from a height of 16 feet and succeeded in saving him.

On the 6th June 1902, a man named Murray threw himself into the sea at Buckie, the tide soon carrying him out into 12 feet of water 100 yards from shore. Duff, at great risk, swam out and rescued him.

Edney, John.  Private 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment.  Case 32082

On the 15th February 1902, Private Ryan, of the same battalion, became exhausted while swimming in the river at Kamptee, India, the depth being 15 to 18 feet and very dangerous. Edney made a gallant attempt to rescue him, but failed, and Ryan was drowned.

On the 8th January 1902, a woman, who had lost her way in the darkness, walked over the quay wall into Hedon Haven at Hull. The tide was out, but there was a depth of 6 to 8 feet of soft mud. Ellison, at great risk, went down and got her head clear, holding her in this position for half an hour, when further help came and they were got out.

On the 11th October 1901, Corpl. Anderson, of the same regiment, was bathing in the Sunday River, Transvaal, when he got into a deep hole and went under. At great risk, Emslie sprang in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 14th May 1902, J.Thompson accidentally fell into the Thames at London Bridge. At the risk of being crushed between a steamer and the quay wall Fabia jumped in and got him out in an unconscious state.

On the 5th September 1902, Edward North fell from the wharf into 20 feet of water in the Tees at Middlesborough. Falconer, at great risk, jumped in from the ferry-boat and rescued him.

On the 26th August 1902, the Hon. L.P.Tollemache was bathing in the estuary of the Conway, when he sank in 10 feet of water. Findlay went in and brought him out in an unconscious state.

On the 11th November 1902, a sailor, in an attempt to swim ashore from his ship in the Tyne at Pelaw Main, near Newcastle, took cramp and was in danger. Forster jumped in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 29th November 1902, a little boy named Meredith fell into the Wye near Ross, Herefordshire. The river was in high flood, 17 feet deep, and very dangerous. Fox, at great risk, plunged in and effected his rescue.

On the 26th February 1902, a youth got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Durban, South Africa. Another lad went to his help, but also got into danger, and both went under. Fuller, at great risk, swam out and was successful in rescuing both.

On the 27th June 1902, a boy fell from the quay into the river at Berwick-on-Tweed, where the current soon carried him out into 15 feet of water. Gardiner, at great risk, plunged in and was successful in saving him.

Gaydon, W.L.  Aged 65.  Case 31952

On the 19th May 1902, a boy fell into the Taw at Barnstable, and the tide soon carried him out into mid-stream. At great risk, Gaydon swam out, but failed to reach him, and he was drowned.

Gladding, Geo.  Master of a Steam Barge.  Case 32022

On the 27th June 1902, Sidney Coe accidentally fell into the Orwell at Ipswich, there being a depth of between 15 and 20 feet. Gladding plunged in and, after swimming 100 yards, caught the lad and took him to the bank.

On the 31st December 1901, a man of the same regiment got into 15 feet of water while crossing the Buffalo River in the Transvaal. Godfrey went in and, with difficulty, got him into shallow water, where further help was given in landing him.

On the 23rd July 1902, two boys, while fishing, fell into the Ouse at Kings Lynn. There was a strong tide and the depth 15 feet. At great risk, Goldsmith jumped in, fully clothed, and saved them, one at a time.

On the 1st September 1902, J.S.Hedges fell overboard from the SS Heather Bell in the Usk at Newport, Mon. Gould, at great risk, sprang in from the steamer and swam with him to land.

On the 23rd June 1902, W.T.Harfield was bathing from a boat in the sea at Shoeburyness when he was seized by the cramp. Greensmith plunged in from the boat and supported him till they were picked up.

Greenwell, Thomas.  Case 32404

On the 3rd November 1902, J.Darwood fell into the dock at West Hartlepool, there being a depth of 10 to 12 feet, and the night dark. Greenwell, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till ropes were got and they were got out.

Griffiths, Harry.  Schoolmaster.  Case 32355

On the 10th October 1902, a woman threw herself into the harbour at Swansea, the depth being 15 feet, the tide strong, and the night dark. At great risk, Griffiths went in, but at first was unable to find her. On going in a second time he found her, but a drunken sailor then jumped in and much impeded him in his efforts, and when all were on board a tug the woman was dead.

On the 5th February 1902, a fire broke out at the oil engine at the Handon Hold Colliery, Durham. The fumes got into some part of the workings, rendering a miner named Bulman unconscious. Grundy, Humble and Johnson, at great risk, succeeded in bringing him out, and then successfully restored him.

On the 1st September 1902, a trooper of the 35th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry lost his horse in deep water and sank at Lennoxton Drift, Newcastle, Natal. Gwynne, at great risk, plunged in, fully clothed, and effected his rescue.

On the 8th January 1902, a soldier was seized with cramp while bathing in the Vaal River at Standerton and sunk in 10 feet of water. Hamer, at great risk, went in and, although being clutched, was able to save the man.

On the 28th June 1902, Arthur Fleet, while bathing in a pool at Sutton Coldfield, became exhausted 50 yards from the bank in 15 feet of water. Harcourt swam out and, at great risk, supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Harper, James.  Aged 12.  Case 32252

On the 31st July 1902, Robert Harper fell from the breakwater into the sea at Granton, there being a depth of 20 feet. His brother, James Harper, at great risk, plunged in and effected his rescue.

Harvey, Frank.  A.B. HMS Haughty.  Case 32115

On the 1st June 1902, Charles Olley fell overboard from a yacht in the harbour at Felixstowe. There was a depth of about 20 feet, and a thunderstorm with heavy rain at the time. Harvey jumped in and was successful in saving him.

Hayes, H.G.  Boatswain SS Albert of Hull.  Case 32407

On the 2nd November 1902, a Frenchman fell into the outer harbour at Calais, the depth being 25 feet, and the sea rough. At great risk, Hayes jumped in and supported him till further help came and they were got out.

On the 12th February 1902, Charles C. Saint fell through the ice on the Ouse at Godmanchester, Hunts. The river here is 35 yards wide and 15 to 20 feet deep. At great risk, Hendrey tried to reach him, but also got immersed, but he managed to support Saint till a lifebuoy was got and both were drawn out.

On the 5th November 1902, Albert Swain accidentally fell into the canal basin at Shardlow, Derbyshire, the night being very dark. Herrod, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till further help came and they were got out.

On the 20th January 1902, Clara Lines accidentally fell from the tow-path into the Thames at Hammersmith, the strong tide running soon carrying her out 50 yards from the bank into deep water. At great risk, Hierons swam out and kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Hill, William.  Aged 13.  Case 31939

On the 31st March 1902, Winifred Henry was bathing at Chaeachacre, Trinidad, when she got into deep water. The sea was rough and the place very dangerous. At great risk, Hill made a daring effort to effect her rescue, but unfortuntely failed, and she was drowned.

On the 3rd July 1902, F.Norrie fell into the Union Canal, Edinburgh, and sank in 9 feet of water. Hogg, at great risk, jumped in and, diving, was able to rescue him.

Holland, T.  Third Officer Telegraph Steamer Grappler.  Case 31940

On the 16th January 1902, the first officer of the Grappler fell overboard in the harbour at St.Thomas, W.I. Knowing the place to abound with sharks, Holland jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat. The Grappler with all on board, was lost in the volcanic eruption at St.Pierre, on May 8th.

On the 26th December 1901, as the SS Chusan was entering the harbour at Singapore, a seaman acidentally fell overboard. Well knowing the great risk from sharks, Hughes sprang in after him and succeeded in effecting his rescue.

Humphrey, R.W.C.  Insurance Agent.  Case 31835

On the 9th January 1902, Donald Derrick, aged 9, fell into the Taff at Llandaff. The river was in flood, 14 feet deep, running with a strong current and very dangerous. At great risk, Humphrey jumped in from a bridge, a height of 30 feet, and succeeded in saving the lad.

Inkle, Geo.  Case 31853

On the 1st February 1902, a youth named Stokes fell through the ice on a clay pond at Mexborough, Yorks, there being a depth of 10 to 12 feet of water. Allen Calladine tried to save him but failed. Inkle, at great risk, then went in and was successful in effecting the rescue.

On the 11th August 1902, Harold Hughes, while fishing at Hilbre Island, off West Kirby, fell from the cliff into the sea, 18 feet below. The tide was running in with great force at the time. Kemp, at great risk, jumped from the cliff and swam with him about 40 yards to where a landing could be effected.

On the 2nd May 1902, a gun coolie fell into the Drosh River, Chitral, and was swept away by the strong current, the river being in flood and very cold. At great risk, Khan plunged in, but was unable to effect the rescue, and the man was drowned.

On the 22nd August 1901, a Sepoy of the same regiment was swept away while bathing at Hanku, China, the river being in flood and 20 feet deep. Ahmed Khan, at great risk, plunged in, but was not successful in effecting the rescue.

On the 18th August 1901, Private Roda Khan, of the same regiment, accidentally fell into the Peiho River, China. There was a strong tide, the water muddy and 14 feet deep. At great risk, Sher Khan jumped in fully clothed, but after searching for 20 minutes failed to find him and he was drowned.

On the 21st July 1902, two boys were on the slipway at Bridlington, when they were carried away by the heavy sea then running. Edwin Peel went in to try and reach them, but was swept away and drowned. Kirkland then went in and caught one of the lads and, with some help from Tom Burdell, saved him. The second lad was rescued by a boat.

On the 21st September 1901, two men got into 20 feet of water in an old quarry at Bombay, India. At great risk, Ladoo jumped in and was able to rescue both men.

On the 27th April 1902, two men were in a small boat, which capsized in the Thames opposite the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The accident took place about 30 yards from the bank in 20 feet of water. At great risk, Little swam out and got the men to hold on to the boat, but as soon as they became exhausted, Davies swam out and gave assistance till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 15th May 1902, Wing Chee fell into the sea at Kowloon, China. There was a strong tide running and the depth 21 feet. Love, at great risk, jumped in fully clothed, and was able to support him till they were picked up.

On the 21st January 1902, a woman named Packham, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Thames in front of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. It was midnight, and there was 12 feet of water with an ebb tide. At great risk, Ludford, who heard the splash, plunged in and brought her to safety.

On the 8th July 1902, Lieut. and Quartermaster J.Cameron, of the same battalion, was bathing in the sea at Kandia, Crete, when he was swept out 70 yards and, owing to the heavy sea, could not return. Lumsden swam out and, with much difficulty, succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 21st January 1902, Private E.O’Farrell, of the same battalion, was bathing in the Vaal River at Schmidt’s Drift when he took cramp and called for help. M’Caig plunged in and, at great risk, rescued him in an exhausted state.

On the 18th June 1902, a boy fell into the river Fergus at Bunnow, Co.Clare, and was carried by the tide into 12 to 14 feet of water. M’Gillan, at great risk, jumped in, fully clothed, and was able to rescue him.

On the 18th March 1902, a boy named Craig fell into deep water in the Clyde at Gourock. M’Lay went in and, at great risk, succeeded in effecting his rescue.

On the 21st February 1902, a passenger named M’Donald accidentally fell overboard from the steamer Princess Olga off the Mull of Galloway. The vessel was going 10½ knots, and there was a choppy sea. At great risk, M’Lennan went over with a line, but was unsuccessful in his endeavour to save him.

On the 15th July 1901, a youth named Stewart was bathing in the sea at Vancouver, British Columbia, when he got into deep water 100 yards from shore, and, being unable to swim, was in danger of drowning. M’Millan, at great risk, went out and succeeded in saving him.

On the 7th August 1902, a boy named Carpenter fell from the pier into the sea at Blackpool. The night was dark, the sea rough, and the depth 15 feet. At great risk, Macmillan jumped in from a height of 25 feet, and, having caught the lad, held him till a line was got and he was pulled up.

On the 25th February 1902, three children accidentally fell into 12 feet of water in the river Cart, at Paisley. Martin, at great risk, jumped in twice, and was successful in saving them.

On the 8th January 1902, a boy fell from a boat into the river at Belize, British Honduras. Melhado took a boat, and going some way out he then plunged in and, at great risk, was able to save the lad.

On the 18th May 1902, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into 25 feet of water in a lake at Crediton. Mesney, at great personal risk, plunged in and rescued her in an unconscious state.

On the 28th June 1902, A.Grosvenor, who is a lunatic, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Regent’s Canal, Shoreditch, there being a depth of 12 feet, and the water very foul. Mills, at great risk, went in and got him near the side, when Police-Sergt. Gibson rendered assistance in landing him.

On the 18th September 1901, Trooper South, of the same regiment, got into difficulty while crossing the Oliphants River at Arnold’s Drift, in the Transvaal. Milne, at great risk, went to his help and managed to land him in safety.

On the 5th June 1902, a lad fell into the Foss Dyke at Lincoln. At great personal risk, Milner, on hearing the alarm, rose from a sick bed, and rushing out, plunged into the stream and managed to rescue him.

On the 9th July 1902, R.A.Pearce, A.B. HMS Hannibal, fell overboard outside Torbay, the sea being choppy at the time. Milverton jumped from the ship, but Pearce sank before being reached.

On the 5th August 1902, F.C.Grosser fell from a barge into the Thames at Silvertown. There was a strong ebb tide with 15 feet of water. Morgan jumped in, fully clothed, and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 14th June 1902, three girls were surrounded by the tide on some rocks at Drigg, Cumberland. The distance from the shore was about 40 yards, and the current runs with great force. Musgrave, at great risk, swam out and brought one girl to land. Again going out he saved a second, but on going out the third time took cramp and nearly lost his life, the third girl drowned.

On the 17th August 1902, W.G.Balls fell into the Thames at Tower Bridge. The place is very dangerous, and there was a strong ebb tide. Nash jumped in and made a gallant attempt to reach him, but failed, and he was drowned.

On the 1st March 1902, Harold Nix, aged 2½ years, fell down a well at Windlesham, Surrey. The depth of the well was 24 feet, with 4 feet of water in it. His sister Mabel, at great risk, went down the well pipe and held him up till further help came and they were drawn up.

On the 6th April 1900, Lieut. W.T.Walker, 3rd New Zealand Contingent, was bathing in the sea at East London, Natal, when he became exhausted outside the breakers. O’Farrell and Cross, at great risk, swam out and brought him in much nearer to the shore and into shallow water, when others assisted in taking him to land.

On the 18th July 1902, Private T.J.O’Brien RMLI, while bathing in Jennycliffe Bay, Plymouth Sound, was siezed with cramp 100 yards from shore. Owen, at great risk, swam out and brought him in for about 70 yards, when Lieut. W.Young swam out, and assisted for the remainder of the distance.

On the 25th November 1902, John M’Cready fell from the pier into the sea at Bangor, Co.Down, the depth being 18 feet, and the night dark. Palfrey, at great risk, jumped in and was able to effect the rescue.

On the 16th February 1902, Private Royle RAMC was bathing in Fish Hoek Bay, Cape Colony, when the rough sea carried him out some 400 yards from the shore. Parker and Fraser swam out and made a gallant effort to save him, but, becoming exhausted, had to desist, and he was drowned.

On the 16th June 1902, about twenty persons were thrown into the sea at Limassol, Cyprus, through the capsizing of a boat. At great risk, Patragas went in and succeeded in saving two persons, he being in the water nearly an hour.

On the 24th April 1902, G.Blackie, while at work on a staging suspended from the side of a ship, fell into the river at Walker-on-Tyne, the suction carrying him under the vessel. At great risk, Pendrigh jumped from a boat, and diving, was able to effect his rescue.

On the 16th August 1902, Alice Davey fell into the River Yeo at Barnstable, there being about 9 feet of water at the place. Her brother Hubert, aged 10, at once jumped in to try and save her, but also got into danger. Penhale then went in and rescued the boy, and again going in saved the girl.

On the 10th April 1902, a man named Stafford fell overboard from a tug in the harbour at Bahia, Brazil. There was a strong tide running, and the night very dark. Percy, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 21st June 1902, R.W.Pope was knocked out of his boat by the wash from the SS Duchess of Albany in Portsmouth Harbour. Perry sprang in from the steamer and, at great risk, held him above water till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 19th November 1901, Captain Bretherton, of the SS Colestrup fell from the jetty into the sea at Alderney. The night was dark and very cold, the depth being 10 feet. Petit, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 26th July 1902, Mary A.Sagus, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Regent’s Canal, Cambridge Heath. The night was dark, the water 9 feet deep, and very foul. At great risk, Plackett jumped in and succeeded in finding and rescuing her, afterwards restoring her to consciousness.

On the 6th March 1902, a railway guard, while bathing in the Zand River, South Africa, got into a deep hole in the river bed. Seeing his danger, Pond, at great risk, went in, and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 25th March 1902, while the 20th Hussars were crossing the Liebenbergs Vlei, Orange River Colony, De Soussa, a native cook, was swept away by the current. At great risk, Pretsell plunged in from the bank and rescued him.

On the 20th August 1902, E.J.Cosham, A.B. HMS Victory, was knocked overboard into the harbour at Portsmouth, owing to the premature bursting of a powder charge. At great risk, Pusey jumped in, but did not succeed in effecting his rescue.

On the 17th October 1901, a canoe with three natives on board was upset on the River Niger at Burutu, in Northern Nigeria. The accident took place some 300 yards from the bank, and the river is infested with alligators. At great risk, Ray swam out and supported them till they were all picked up by a boat which was put out from the bank.

On the 2nd December 1901, Trooper Gifford, 7th Dragoon Guards, in attempting to cross the river at Kroonstad, was with his horse swept away by the current. Reed, at great risk, after a swim of 200 yards managed to rescue him.

On the 21st November 1901, Neil Gunn, after landing from the SS St.Clair at Portnacon, Loch Eriboll, walked over the quay into 12 feet of water. The night was dark and very cold. At great risk Rennie jumped in from a height of 20 feet and was able to rescue him.

On the 31st January 1900, Bombardier Buzzard RFA, in trying to swim the Orange River, Cape Colony, was seized with cramp. At great risk, Richardson jumped in and rescued him after being carried a quarter of a mile down the stream.

On the 6th July 1902, Robert Smith fell from the quay a height of 18 feet into the Tyne at Newcastle. At great risk, Rind jumped in and swam with him to a wherry, on to which he was taken in an unconscious state. Police Constable F.Wormald succeeded in restoring him.

On the 17th February 1902, a lady fell through the ice on a lake at Sherborne, Dorset. At great risk, Ross jumped in and was successful in bringing her to the bank.

On the 27th January 1902, a canoe was upset in the rapids on the Tano River, Gold Coast Colony, throwing its occupants into the water. One of the men, named Biney, was unable to swim, and Ross made a gallant attempt to save him, but failed through being clutched, and the man was drowned.

On the 19th May 1902, a boy fell into the Thames at the Irongate Stairs, Tower Bridge. There was a very strong and dangerous tide running at the time. At great risk Ross jumped in from his vessel, while M’Intosh jumped from the parapet of the bridge, and together they were able to hold the boy till a rope was got and they were taken on board a vessel.

On the 26th January 1902, a boy, while at play on the beach at Saltburn, was swept away by a huge wave, and was in danger of being carried out to sea. At great risk, Russell plunged in and was successful in rescuing him, and thereafter restoring him to consciousness.

On the 23rd April 1902, Gunner Reeve RGA, was washed from the breakwater at Jersey by the heavy sea running. The place is very dangerous owing to the sharp rocks all round. At great risk, Shannon plunged in and tried hard to rescue him, but failed.

On the 7th August 1902, three ladies were bathing in the sea at Bonmahon, Co.Waterford, when they were swept out 50 yards from shore into 10 feet of water. Shaw swam out and rescued one of them, and on going out a second time was carried away and drowned. Holmes then went in and brought the second lady in, but she was dead when landed. Sarsfield succeeded in saving the third lady.

On the 3rd January 1902, a boy, while at play, fell from the bridge into the Trent at Burton, and the river being in flood was quickly carrying him away. Shelly, who was passing at the time, threw off his coat and, at great risk, plunging in, managed to save him.

On the 3rd September 1902, two lads were in a small boat which capsized at Heysham. One of the lads was swept away and drowned, but the other held on to the boat, which drifted under the cliff. At great risk, Shepherd was lowered down from a height of 40 feet and, swimming out to the lad, succeeded in effecting his rescue.

On the 30th June 1902, a lad named Conquest fell into the sea at the Hot Walls, Southsea, and was carried out 20 yards by the strong tide. Simpson, at great risk, swam out, and was successful in saving him.

On the 4th December 1901, the cook belonging to the 7th Bengal Infantry fell down a well at Lucknow. The well was 40 feet deep with 12 feet of water in it. At great risk, Jagesar Singh and Sultan Singh went down by an old rope and supported him till a stronger line was got and they were pulled up.

On the 15th February 1902, two boys were sliding on a mill reservoir at Shaw, near Oldham, when the ice gave way 6 yards from the bank and both fell in. Smethurst, who cannot swim, went out to their help but also fell in. He in some way managed to support them till further help came and all were got out in safety.

On the 24th June 1902, a child fell into the Avon at Littlehampton, there being 12 feet of water and a strong tide running. Sole, at great risk, plunged in and effected the rescue.

On the 27th August 1902, a stoker of the same ship fell into 12 feet of water in the dock at Grimsby. Sparkes jumped in and managed, at great risk, to keep him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 27th July 1902, Thomas Palmer, in trying to recover a stick, fell into the Thames at Vauxhall. There was 12 feet of water with a strong flood tide. At great risk, Stephens jumped from a temporary bridge and rescued the lad.

On the 4th April 1902, a boy named Ashley fell into the Regent’s Canal at Haggerston. At great risk, Swindell jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 16th February 1902, a youth named Simpson fell through the ice on the Cavendish Dock at Barrow. A comrade named O’Dell tried to save him but also got in. At great risk, Taylor went in with a rope and got Simpson out, and again going in, he also rescued the other lad.

On the 1st February 1902, owing to the capsizing of a boat in which he was leaving his wrecked smack, Thomas Foster was thrown into the sea at Ramsgate. It was very cold and rough at the time. Taylor, at great risk, jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 24th August 1901, a soldier belonging to the same battalion fell into a stream at Anshan, North China. Thapa made a gallant attempt to save him, but failed, and the man was drowned.

On the 23rd February 1902, a lad named Carberry got on a detached piece of ice on the Tyne at Heddon, and was being carried rapidly down the river. At great risk, Tulley swam out and, with much difficulty, guided the piece of ice to the bank and thus saved the boy.

On the 20th October 1902, W.Valentine, aged 61, accidentally fell into the Yare at Yarmouth. There was a strong tide, and the night dark. Turrell heard the splash and, at great risk, jumped in, and was able to save him.

On the 1st February 1902, John F.Crust, in going to his ship, fell into the Barge Dock at Goole, the depth of water being 12 feet. Ullathorne, at great risk, jumped in, but, being clutched and dragged under water, was unable to effect the rescue, and Crust was drowned.

On the 14th November 1902, Arthur Underwood, aged 3, fell down a well 20 feet deep with 6 to 7 feet of water in it, at Street, Somerset. His mother, Mrs Underwood, got down by the chain and, at great risk, was able to keep him above water till further help came and they were got out.

On the 24th December 1901, while a convoy was crossing Bosman’s Spruit in the Transvaal, the bridge being 2 feet under water, a soldier was swept off into the river where the depth was 9 to 10 feet. Hereward plunged in from the bank and, at great risk, effected the rescue.

On the 13th April 1902, a youth named Turnbull waded out to a wreck at the entrance of the river Tyne, and being caught by a wave, was swept out into deep water. At great risk, there being a heavy backwash at the time, Walker swam out fully clothed, and was successful in bringing him to land.

On the 2nd January 1902, a man fell overboard from HMS Implacable in the harbour at Malta. The depth was 7 fathoms, and the night dark and cold. At great risk, Waymark jumped in and managed to bring him to the gangway, where they were taken on board.

On the 26th February 1902, Corpl. J.Miller RE fell from the pontoon into the Vaal River at Coal Mine Drift, Transvaal. Webb-Bowen, at great risk, plunged in fully clothed and brought him back in safety.

On the 31st July 1902, R.Heymer, while bathing in the Thames at Purfleet, got into deep water. West, at great risk, dropped from a height of 10 feet, jumped in, and rescued him.

On the 16th February 1902, a boy fell through the ice on the Nene, at Northampton. At great risk, Wharf went out on the ice which again broke and let him in, but he succeeded in saving the lad.

On the 4th January 1902, a woman named Smith, while seeing a friend off by the steamer, walked over the pier at Lerwick. The night was dark, and the depth 20 feet. At great risk, White jumped in from a height of 10 feet, and succeeded in swimming with her to the landing.

On the 25th February 1902, Percy and Ernest Powell, aged 12 and 9, fell through the ice on a pond at Stroud, Glos. Whittaker, at great risk, succeeded in saving them.

On the 8th March 1902, William Morton, in the darkness of the night, walked into the canal at Pontypridd. There was a depth of 7 feet and a walled bank. At great risk, Williams jumped in and managed to land him on the opposite bank.

On the 6th June 1902, Gunner Mangan RGA became exhausted while bathing in the Ganges Canal at Roorkee, India. The depth was 9 feet, and the place very weedy. Williams gallantly sprang in, fully clothed, and, at great risk, rescued him.

On the 24th July 1902, Margt. Kavanagh, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Liffey at Ormand Quay, Dublin. Constables Williams, Murphy and J.Kirk jumped in and, with difficulty, succeeded in saving her.

On the 2nd January 1902, the SS Walla Walla sank after a collision in the North Pacific. Miss Williams, one of the passengers, by her calm courage did much to reassure the passengers, and thus contributed to the saving of life.

On the 9th April 1902, two men, while at work on the pier at Rhyl, fell into the sea below and were quickly carried away by the tide. Both men got hold of small planks, with which they tried to keep afloat, but one of them, named Hollingworth, was seen to become exhausted. Williams, at great risk, swam out for three quarters of a mile, and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 6th July 1902, a little boy fell into harbour at Poole, Dorset, the depth at the time being 20 feet. William Clarke, aged 15, jumped in to try and save him, but got into difficulty. Wills then went in and succeeded in saving both.

On the 22nd August 1902, Miss Kate Clegg, while bathing from the beach at Rhosnigr, Anglesey, was caught by the current and carried out 150 yards, the sea being very rough. At great risk, Wilson swam out and succeeded in rescuing her.

On the 14th July 1902, the son of the American Ambassador at Constantinople was bathing in the Bosphorus, when he became exhausted in the strong tide running. At great risk, Windham went to his help and, with difficulty, succeeded in saving him.

On the 3rd September 1902, the cook of the SS Masspequa accidentally fell into the dock at Leith, the depth being 30 feet, the night dark, and a gale blowing. Windows, at great risk, jumped in, and having got a line round him, he was pulled up.

Woodward, Charles.  Aged 14.  Case 32208

On the 10th August 1902, A.H.Tyler, in trying to jump on to a barge at the entrance of the West India Docks, fell into the Thames. There was a flood tide with 21 feet of water. At great risk, Woodward jumped in and made a gallant attempt to rescue him, but failed, and Tyler was drowned.

On the 28th December 1901, a soldier of the 14th Soudanese Battalion, while assisting to refloat a steamer on the Blue Nile, Central Africa, was swept into deep water. At great risk, Yussef went in and succeeded in effecting his rescue.
