On the 15^th September 1902, a youth, while bathing in the Herbadda River, Broach District, India, was swept out 50 yards into 20 feet of water. At great risk, Abdulla and Bechar swam out and managed to rescue him.

On the 30^th May 1903, Patrick Courtney, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the harbour at Queenstown, the depth being 8 fathoms with a strong tide. Ahern, at great risk, jumped in and got a line round him, by which he was pulled into a boat.

On the 24^th May 1903, a boat with three men on board was carried over the Town Weir in the Avon, at Bath. One man was drowned, the second managed to reach land, and Amery, at great risk, jumped in and rescued the third.

On the 20^th December 1902, Catherine Williamson, in the darkness of the night walked over the end of the pier at Lerwick into 25 feet of water. Anderson, at great risk, plunged in and rescued her.

On the 25^th May 1903, Agnes Gibson, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Surrey Canal at Deptford. At great risk, Barclay jumped in and, after being dragged under water, managed to rescue her.

On the 15^th July 1903, two ladies were in a boat which was run down by a launch on the Thames near Marlow. Barrett, at great risk, swam out from the bank and, with three other gentlemen (see    Case 32746), succeeded in saving them.

On the 20^th August 1903, J.O’Connor, while bathing in 30 feet of water at Kilkee, Co. Clare, got into danger, the sea being rough and a gale blowing. At great risk, Barry went to his help and succeeded in saving him.

On the 24^th July 1903, the second engineer of the same vessel fell into the harbour at New York, the depth being 35 feet and the night dark. At great risk, Beadle jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 19^th June 1903, Charles Flude fell into the Regent’s Canal, Hoxton. Bellamy jumped in and, after being clutched, succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 27^th May 1903, Sydney Cook, while bathing in the Nar at King’s Lynn, got into difficulty. Bettinson, at great risk, went in, but was clutched, and had difficulty in saving himself, Cook being drowned.

On the 3^rd August 1903, Charles Oke got into 12 feet of water while bathing at Trebarwith, Cornwall, there being a dangerous undertow. Blight, at great risk, swam out and was able to rescue him.

On the 19^th July 1903, a lady fell from the cliff at Laxey, Isle of Man, into the sea, 50 feet below, the depth being 30 feet and the sea rough. Boreland and Cowley, at great risk, climbed down the cliff and, plunging in, rescued her in an unconscious state.

On the 30^th October 1902, Miss C.T.W.Shanks was accidentally knocked overboard from a gondola on the Grand Union Canal, Venice. Bortolini, who is only a poor swimmer, plunged in and rescued her after going down twice.

On the 2^nd December 1902, Walter Band fell into a handhole at the Etherow Bleaching Company’s Works, Hollingworth, Cheshire. The hole was 3 feet wide, 9½ feet deep, with 3 feet of boiling water at the bottom. At great risk, Broadhurst went down and although severely scolded was successful in rescuing Band.

On the 1^st March 1903, a man of the RMA accidentally fell into the sea at Weymouth. Bromley at once jumped in, and was able to rescue him.

On the 25^th August 1903, two ladies, while bathing in the Solway at Powfoot, near Annan, were swept out 120 yards into 12 feet of water. Bryden, at great risk, swam out and supported them for 15 minutes, when they were got into a boat.

On the 11^th March 1903, the mail boat with six persons on board was capsized off Aranmore, Co. Donegal. Four of the men held on to the boat, the other two drifting away. At great risk, Byrne, who was one of the four, went after the others and managed to get them back to the boat, whence after some 30 minutes they were picked up.

On the 8^th May 1903, a boy fell from the quay into the sea at Queenstown, the depth being 18 feet with a strong current running. At great risk, Burke jumped in, and having caught him, both were got out with a rope.

On the 27^th October 1902, a trooper of the 4^th Hussars became exhausted when swimming his horse at Madaveram, India, and got off only to take cramp in 30 feet of water, 100 yards from the bank. Butler went to his help, and, at great risk, kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 15^th December 1902, a woman named Gallagher fell into the river at Glenealvy, Co. Mayo. The night was dark and the river in flood, running strong. At great risk, Calnan plunged in and was able to rescue her.

On the 30^th March 1902, Trooper Currie, of the same battalion, while watering his horse in the Wilge River, Orange River Colony, was swept away by the current, the river being in high flood. Captain Calwell, at great risk, plunged in from the bank and effected his rescue.

On the 12^th July 1903, two youths, while bathing in the Wissey at Whitington, Norfolk, got into a dangerous hole 10 feet deep. Cater went in fully clothed and, at great risk, managed to save both lads.

On the 21^st March 1903, Sepoy Gunga, 2^nd Sikhs, was overcome by foul gas while cleaning out a well at Bera, Somaliland. Chand went to his rescue, but was also struck down unconscious. At great risk, Khan went down and succeeded in saving both men.

On the 26^th September 1903, Sidney W.Daniel took a fit and fell into the dock at Bristol just as steamer was coming up. Chapman, at great risk, jumped in from the steamer and was able to rescue him.

On the 23^rd March 1903, a man who was under the influence of drink fell into an old marl pit at Church Easton, Staffs. Chesterton, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 18^th September 1903, a boy fell from the end of the South Parade Pier into the sea at Southsea, there being a strong tide with a depth of 25 feet. At great risk, Clark plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 10^th August 1903, a boy named Giles fell from the groyne into the sea at St Leonards. The water was rough and 8 to 10 feet deep. Clarkson, at great risk, went in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 31^st July 1903, a boy named Pont was carried out a distance of 50 yards from shore into 8 feet of water in the Firth of Forth at Kirkcaldy, when he held on to the anchor rope of a boat. Seeing that he was becoming exhausted, Clunie, at great risk, swam out and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 24^th September 1903, seven natives were in danger of drowning in the Palar River, Vellore, India, they being on an island 300 yards from the bank, over which the flood was rapidly rising. At great risk, Colville swam out, pushing a light boat, and, after four journeys, was successful in saving them.

On the 2^nd September 1903, W.Hearfield fell into the ferry-boat dock at Hull. Commander went in and was able to rescue him.

On the 14^th August 1903, G.C.Cormack was accidentally knocked overboard from a fishing-boat about 500 yards outside the harbour at Banff. His father, at great risk, jumped after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a small boat ten minutes after.

On the 12^th June 1903, a boy fell into the Lee at Cork, the depth being 16 feet. Cotter, at great risk, jumped in, fully clothed, and succeeded in saving him.

On the 25^th November 1902, a boy named Earle fell from the wharf into the sea at St John’s, Newfoundland. It was very cold, a heavy sea running, and the depth 7 fathoms. At great risk, Cullen jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 1^st May 1903, the septic tanks at the sewage works at Sheringham exploded, injuring two men and throwing them into one of the tanks. Dack, at great risk, got them out, but one died shortly after.

On the 24^th September 1903, five men went down into the main sewer in Union Street Southwark, and were struck down by foul gas. The depth of the sewer was 16 feet. Dallimore, at great risk, went down with a rope and managed to rescue all the men.

On the 28^th June 1903, a child accidentally fell into the Lee at Cork, the depth being 15 feet with a fast tide running. Daly, at great risk, jumped in and managed to land her some distance lower down.

On the 2^nd May 1903, Richard Jones, in going to his vessel, fell into the dock at Portmadoc. The night was very dark, and the depth 9 feet. Davies, at great risk, plunged in and searched for 10 minutes, but failed to find him.

On the 17^th July 1903, T.E.Foulkes fell into the dock at Carnarvon, between a steamer and the quay wall, the depth being 14 feet. Davies, at great risk, jumped in and, having got a rope round him, both were pulled up.

On the 5^th October 1903, Patrick Quinn fell into the Foyle at Londonderry, the depth being 20 feet with a strong tide running. Dinsmore, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till a lifebuoy was got and they were pulled out.

On the 9^th July 1903, Albert Auty fell into the canal at Leeds, the depth at the place being 12 feet. Dixon, at great risk, jumped in fully clothed and rescued him.

On the 7^th June 1903, W.Damms fell into the Witham at Boston. The river is some 150 feet wide, with a depth of 15 feet. Donnison, who was on the opposite bank at once swam across and, having caught Damms, got him into a boat. The lad ran great risk, as his arm was weak from being recently fractured.

On the 12^th June 1903, a boy named Peckham fell into the Thames at Greenwich, there being a strong current and 12 to 14 feet deep. At great risk, Donovan jumped in and tried to save him, but failed.

On the 24^th November 1902, Private J. Weaver, Connaught Rangers, while swimming his horse in the Mulla River, Poona, India, accidentally fell in and sank in the deep water 25 yards from the bank. Lieut. Drysdale swam out fully clothed, and at great risk dived several times, but failed to find him.

On the 23^rd September 1903, Charles Drew, in trying to pass from one boat to another, fell into the sea at Torpoint, Cornwall. This took place 70 yards out in 16 feet of water. At great risk, Ennor swam out and supported him till they were picked up.

On the 9^th September 1903, three persons were in danger of drowning at Dolgelly, owing to the rivers overflowing their banks. Evans went to their assistance and, with considerable difficulty and risk, succeeded in saving them.

On the 21^st November 1902, F Tunnicliffe, stoker, HMS Galatea, fell into the dock at Hull, the night being dark and very cold. At great risk, Findlay jumped in and supported him till a rope was got and they were drawn up.

On the 1^st July 1903, a boy named North fell into a mill reservoir at Ossett, Yorkshire, and sank to the bottom in 9 feet of water. Firth was called from a field near, and running to the place he at once dived in and, finding the boy at the second attempt, succeeded in saving him.

On the 16^th May 1903, John Wogan threw himself into the grand Canal, Dublin. The depth was 7 feet, with a quantity of weeds, and the time 2.30 a.m. Fox, at great risk, jumped in and after a struggle, got him near the bank, when Constable J.Kirby, Dublin Metropolitan Police, assisted in landing him.

On the 15^th December 1902, a girl accidentally fell into the Thames at Kingston, there being a strong stream running and the weather very cold. Fullick, at great risk, jumped in from the tug and rescued her.

On the 4^th August 1903, a man accidentally fell into the dock at Dover. Again Glinn jumped in and, at great risk, kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 7^th July 1903, Michel (sic) Bell, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself from the Queen’s Bridge into the Lagan at Belfast, there being a depth of some 20 feet. At great risk, Glover jumped after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat. Glover was accidentally killed a few days after the rescue.

On the 11^th July 1903, a man named Ferguson fell into the harbour at Leith, there being 10 feet of water and the landing 30 yards away. Gordon, at great risk, jumped in and was able to rescue him.

On the 7^th July 1903, a man named Lister fell into the canal lock at Naburn, Yorks, there being a depth of 17 feet of water. Grace ran from some distance and, at great risk, plunged in, but, after diving several times, was unable to find him.

On the 13^th April 1903, two men were bathing in the sea at East London, Cape Colony, and were unable to regain the shore. At great risk, Hains swam out and rescued them one at a time.

On the 28^th July 1903, a boy named Gadsby fell into the Tyne at South Shields, there being a depth of 23 feet and the water very foul. Harding, at great risk, jumped in and, having caught him, swam with him 30 yards to the landing.

On the 11^th July 1903, J.Crossin, while bathing in 10 feet of water in the Ouse at St Neot’s, was seized with cramp. Harding, who has an almost useless arm, went in and, at great risk, saved him.

On the 29^th October 1903, a little girl fell from the bridge into the River Perry at Ruyton Eleven Towns, Salop, and was being swept away by the stream, the river being in flood and 9 feet deep. At great risk, Harris plunged in and, having caught her, kept her up till help was given in landing them.

On the 28^th July 1903, a boy, while fishing, fell into the sea at Kustendjie, Roumania, there being a depth of 10 feet of water. Harris, at great risk, went in and managed to save him.

On the 15^th July 1903, F.Richards got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Devonport. At great risk, Hatherley swam out nearly 100 yards and kept him afloat till they were taken into a boat.

On the 4^th December 1902, a lighter which was being towed in the Nile near Shellal struck on a rock and, the tow-rope parting, those on board were in great danger. Hicks swam out with a rope and, at great risk, secured the lighter, and all were saved.

On the 26^th May 1903, a man named Balme threw himself from the ferry boat into the Thames off Woolwich, the depth being 25 feet. At great risk, Hitchcox jumped after him, and, after a swim of 80 yards, caught him, both being afterwards picked up by a boat.

On the 7^th June 1903, a boat was smashed against the New Weir on the Thames, at Penton Hook, and a woman who was on board was carried through the sluice, the depth being 10 feet. Hobbs, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 9^th July 1903, four youths, none of whom could swim, were bathing in a dam 60 feet deep at Stanningley, Yorks. There was an old raft in the water, and to this the youths were holding on when it gave way, leaving them struggling in the water. Holder and Ormanroyd went in and managed, at great risk, to save three of them, the fourth being drowned.

On the 11^th September 1903, Jas.Collins tripped over a rope and fell into the Alexandria Dock at Bootle, there being a depth of 26 feet. Holding jumped in and, at great risk, succeeded in saving him.

On the 10^th July 1903, a Chinese coolie fell into the river at Shanghai, there being a very strong tide and the depth 28 feet. Holloway plunged in and kept him afloat till both were got out with a rope.

On the 28^th May 1903, Gilbert Carson fell into the Clyde at the entrance to the Albert Harbour, Greenock, there being a depth of 25 feet with an ebb tide. Holmes, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 4^th October 1903, C.E.Grenville, while bathing in the sea at Porthcurnow, Cornwall, got into difficulty and was being carried away by the tide. Hone, at great risk, swam out and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 16^th December 1902, a native gun carrier, while bathing in the sea at Bathurst, became exhausted and unable to land owing to the strong current then running. At great risk, Hoskyns and Sebi swam out and succeeded with much difficulty in effecting the rescue.

On the 18^th January 1903, Frank Martin fell through the ice into 8 feet of water at Partney, Lincolnshire. Hutchinson went to his help and also fell through, but succeeded, at great risk to himself, in keeping Martin afloat and getting him to the side.

On the 28^th November 1903, a man tripped over a rope and fell into the Queen’s Dock at Hull, the night being very dark. At great risk, Huxley plunged in and, after a hard struggle, managed to save him.

On the 9^th May 1903, two children, while at play, fell into the Avon at Bristol, the depth being 6 to 7 feet. At great risk, Jewell jumped in and rescued them one after the other.

On the 21^st July 1903, a man fell into the harbour at Stranraer, the night being dark and the depth 12 feet. Johnston, at great risk, jumped in and kept him afloat till they were taken into a boat.

On the 10^th June 1903, Harry Lloyd fell into the Regent’s Canal, Hoxton. The canal here is 15 yards wide and 6 feet deep. Jonas, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 1^st September 1903, James Regan walked over the quay at Holyhead into the harbour 20 feet below, the night being very dark. At great risk, Jones went in and, with the help of a lifebuoy, succeeded in saving him.

On the 21^st March 1903, A W Poplett, Petty Officer of the same ship, fell overboard into the Grand Harbour at Malta. Jones, at great risk, jumped after him, and with some difficulty got him to a boat.

On the 10^th July 1903, Matthew Dunn fell overboard from the SS Celtic in the Mersey off Egremont. There was a strong tide running at the time. Jones, at great risk, jumped from the ship, but failed to reach Dunn, who was drowned.

On the 10^th June 1903, a little boy fell into the Tamar at Saltash, Cornwall. Keith plunged in and, at great risk, rescued him from 10 feet of water.

On the 2^nd July 1903, a woman fell overboard from the G.E.R.steamer Suffolk, 300 yards from shore at Harwich. Kendall, at great risk jumped after her and kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 31^st January 1903, Drummer M’Leod, of the Cameron Highlanders, in an endeavour to recover his cap, jumped from the bridge into the Ness at Inverness. The river was in high flood, running strong, and he soon got into difficulty. At great risk, Lamb jumped in, but was unable to save him, and also got into danger. Macrae then went in and saved M’Leod, while Marello plunged in and rescued Lamb.

On the 1^st January 1903, 1903 Sergt. A.Morris, of the same regiment, in returning to camp at Pretoria, fell into a well 20 feet deep with 10 to 12 feet of water in it. Latimer, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till further help came and they were got out. Latimer was severely lacerated by some of the barbed wire in the well.

On the 2^nd June 1903, John E. Seymour accidentally slipped into the sea from East Pier at Howth. Lattimer, at great risk, jumped in and supported him for 10 minutes, when a rope was got and they were drawn up.

On the 8^th May 1902, Corporal Black, of the 2^nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, when trying to cross the Orange River, Cape Colony, got into a hole and sank. The river was in flood, 10 to 15 feet deep, and very dangerous. At great risk, Leckie-Ewing plunged in and caught him, but, being twice dragged under, had to release his hold and Black was drowned.

On the 28^th June 1903, E.Mordle, while bathing in the the Rother at Middlehurst, Sussex, got into a dangerous hole, 15 feet deep, and sank. Lewis went in and, at the seventh dive, got him up, but life was extinct.

On the 12^th February 1903, Lieut. G.N.S.Keene and a native boatman were out duck shooting on a lake at Tilong, Burma, when their boat sank about 100 yards from the bank. The lake was very dangerous, being 6 to 10 feet deep and full of weeds. At great risk, Maung Shwe Lin swam out and, with much difficulty, managed to save both men.

On the 28^th July 1902, a rifleman of the 4^th Gurkhas fell into the Peiho River, in China. The night was dark, with a strong tide and heavy rain. At great risk, Lindesay plunged in, and was able to rescue him.

On the 9^th September 1903, Jas. Stevens fell from a coaldrop into the dock at Grimsby, the depth being 20 feet. At great risk, Lucas jumped in from a lighter and was able to rescue him.

On the 25^th January 1903, owing to the darkness of the night, a woman walked over the pier-head at Lerwick into 25 feet of water. At great risk, Martin jumped in and succeeded in rescuing her.

On the 21^st August 1903, two lads fell from a raft into a disused clay-pit at Tottenham, the depth of water being 35 feet. Maskelyne, from Romford, who was near at the time, went in twice and succeeded, at great risk, in saving both.

On the 4^th January 1903, a Russian sailor slipped from the quay and fell into the harbour at Poole, Dorset. The night was dark with heavy rain, and a gale blowing. Matthews, aged 60, at great risk, plunged in and kept him afloat till further help came and they were got out in safety.

On the 17^th July 1903, a boy named Burton fell into a pond in Bushey Park. The pond is walled and difficult to get out from. At great risk, May got down into the water and managed to rescue him.

On the 7^thAugust 1903, John Russell tripped over a mooring hook and fell into the Liffey at Dublin. McCormack, at great risk, jumped in from a height of 22 feet and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 22^nd July 1903, Daniel Ryan, while bathing at Kilkee, was unable to regain the landing, the sea being rough and the depth 8 to 12 feet. At great risk, Meers went in and was successful in saving him.

On the 1^st April 1903, a man fell into 24 feet of water in the Prince of Wales Dock, Swansea. At great risk, Meyrick jumped in and got a rope round him, but on being pulled up this broke and both had to be in the water till a second rope was got and they were drawn up.

On the 15^th April 1903, Private J.Flemming, 3^rd Battalion Warwickshire Regiment was in a transport cart which was backed over the wharf into the harbour at Hamilton, Bermuda, the sea being rough and 24 feet deep. At great risk, Mitchell jumped in, and was able to rescue him.

On the 4^th June 1903, a boat with four youths on board was capsized on the River Bann at Portadown, the depth being 10 to 12 feet. One lad swam to the bank, but Moneypenny, at great risk, got Richard Reid to the upturned boat, and also tried to save W.Reid, who was drowned.

On the 8^th July 1903, a boy named Clancy fell into the Shannon at Limerick, there being a depth of some 9 feet at the place. At great risk, Mrs Murphy jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 13^th March 1903, in an attempt at suicide a man threw himself into the dock at Barry. The night was dark and stormy. Murphy, at great risk, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 24^th October 1902, a woman and child, in landing from the ferry steamer Tara, at Sakrighat, were accidentally pushed into the Ganges. The night was dark and the current strong. At great risk, Musan, employed on the vessel, plunged in and was able to rescue both.

On the 17^th January 1903, two lads were bathing in the sea at Durban when they were swept out by the strong tide. Newsham jumped in from a boat and was able to save one, the other being drowned.

On the 15^th July 1903, two ladies were in a boat which was run down by a launch on the Thames near Marlow. Norris, Cocks and Hicks jumped from the launch and, with aid of another gentleman (see    Case 32936), succeeded in saving them.

On the 25^th September 1902, a Sower of the Hyderabad Lancers was stunned while swimming his horse in a tank at Bolarum, India. Nursoo, at great risk, went in from the bank and rescued him.

On the 12^th July 1903, a lad named Duggan, who had gone out a long distance at Ballydehob, Co. Cork, became exhausted in 12 feet of water. O’Sullivan swam out 300 yards and, at great risk, rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 2^nd August 1903, owing to the capsizing of a boat, F.W.Ryall, Petty Officer, Torpedo Boat No.87, was thrown into the sea in Loch Ryan, the night being dark with a rough wind and sea. Ormsby at once jumped in and supported him till they were picked up ten minutes after.

On the 27^th June 1903, a boy fell into the Boyne at Drogheda, and was carried 200 yards down by the strong current. Owens, at great risk, went in and rescued him, thereafter restoring him to consciousness.

On the 1^st July 1903, Thomas Dartnell fell into the Thames from the promenade landing-stage at Gravesend. Pattinson, at great risk, jumped in and caught him, when they were got into a boat.

On the 10^th July 1903, a boy had fallen into the Tay at Perth. There was a depth of 10 feet and a strong stream running. At great risk, Peters plunged in and was successful in saving him.

On the 30^th September 1902, a lady, in an attempt to land from a barge, fell into the sea at St Johns, Newfoundland. Pratt, clad in oilskins and heavy sea boots, jumped in and supported her till ropes were got and they were pulled out

On the 20^th April 1903, two men of the 7^th Bombay Pioneers fell into a well at Galadi, Somaliland. At great risk, Prissick went down, but was unable to find the men, he himself being got out in an unconscious state.

On the 21^st July 1903, a man fell overboard from HMS Good Hope in Dublin Bay, the sea being rough at the time. Pye, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 21^st May 1903, Percy Calvesbert fell from a tree into the Colne at Colchester, the depth of water being 10 feet, and the river 50 to 60 feet wide. At great risk, Rabett jumped in from the opposite bank, and succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 19^th May 1903, W.Nesbitt, when at work on a swinging stage fell into the Abercorn Basin at Belfast. There was a running tide and the depth 20 feet. At great risk, Ravenscroft dived in, but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 1^st September 1902, a fearful storm raged along the South African coast, a number of vessels being wrecked. Richards distinguished himself in his gallant attempts to save life.

On the 3^rd August 1903, P.Callaghan fell from a barge into the East India Dock at Blackwall, where the depth is 30 feet. Ritchie, at great risk and, after a hard struggle, succeeded in saving him.

On the 23^rd July 1902, a boat with six men on board was capsized on Lake Darling, Nova Scotia; two of the men swam to land, two clung to the boat, the other two going down in 15 feet of water. Hearing the cry for help, the Rev. Rose got into an old punt, and, paddling with his hand, reached the place, and diving brought up the two men one at a time, and getting them into the old boat, was able to get them to the shore. He also succeeded in saving the two men who were clinging to the boat.

On the 19^th July 1903, a woman threw herself into the Surrey Canal at Peckham, the night being dark. Russell dived in and rescued her in an unconscious state, and thereafter succeeded in restoring her.

On the 25^th January 1903, five persons were thrown into the Bela Tank at Demoh, India, owing to the bullocks in their wagon running away, there being a depth of 12 feet of water. Sahai went in and was able to save four lives.

On the 15^th January 1903, a lad named Gardner fell through the ice on the lake at Witham, Essex. Sainty crawled along the ice, which again broke and let him in, but, at great risk to himself, he kept the lad afloat for 20 minutes, and was then obliged to let go, and Gardner was drowned.

On the 10^th August 1903, Vivian Comins, while bathing in the sea at Marske, got into a deep hole about 50 yards out, the wind being off shore and the sea rather rough. At great risk, Sanderson swam out and was able to rescue her in an unconscious state.

On the 28^th June 1903, John Peterson fell into the Albert Edward Dock at North Shields, the depth being 30 feet. Scott plunged in and, at great risk, effected the rescue.

On the 7^th May 1903, a little boy fell into the canal at Ebley, near Stroud, the depth of water being 7 feet. At great risk, Shipway, who is unable to swim, jumped in and caught him, when help was given in landing them.

On the 29^th August 1903, a girl fell into the weir at Sunderland, there being a depth of some 30 feet. At great risk, Simpson jumped in and supported her till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 11^th August 1902, a woman in a fit of temper threw herself into a well 40 feet deep at Goona, India. At great risk, Singh jumped in and kept her afloat till a rope was got and they were hauled up.

On the 25^th September 1902, Kanaya Singh was accidentally struck by his horse while swimming in a tank at Bolarum, India, and sank in 7 feet of water. At great risk, Zalem Singh and Sital went to his help and got him to the bank, but he was dead when landed.

On the 28^th August 1903, W.Ward and J.Burrows were bathing outside the harbour at Ramsgate when they were carried into 9 feet of water. Sloan at great risk, went in and saved Ward, but Burrows was drowned.

On the 21^st May 1903, a little boy fell into the Thames at Westminster. There was a strong tide and the depth 14 feet. Smith, at great risk, went in and got hold of him, both being picked up by a boat.

On the 20^th July 1903, James Fox fell from the wharf into the Tees at Middlesborough, there being a strong ebb tide and the depth 10 feet. Smith, at great risk, jumped in fully clothed and succeeded in saving the youth.

On the 12^th August 1903, two men who were bathing in the sea at Bedruthan, Cornwall, got into difficulty, and were swept out 60 to 70 yards by the strong tide. Spicer, at great risk, swam out and saved them, a third man who was in the water drowned.

On the 9^th March 1903, a seaman fell overboard from HMS Arethusa, off Sheerness. Startin, at great risk, jumped from the ship and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 17^th January 1903, F.Mather, while skating on the Mill Lodge at Birkacre, near Chorley, fell through the ice some 20 yards from the bank. At great risk, Stowell went to his help but also fell in. He, however, managed to keep Mather above water till ladders were got, and they were rescued.

On the 8^th May 1903, a seaman belonging to HMS Glory fell overboard from a sampan at Hankow. There was a rapid stream running, and the river very dangerous. Talbot, at great risk, jumped in and brought him to the gangway, when he was taken on board.

On the 5^th December 1903, a labourer fell into the Thames at Wapping, the depth being 20 feet and a dense fog prevailing at the time. Talmage, at great risk, jumped in and, after swimming 100 yards, caught him and landed him in safety.

On the 30^th July 1903, Frederick Hall got out of his depth while bathing at Kilkee, Co. Clare. Toppin, at great risk, went to his assistance and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

On the 25^th September 1903, a man named Mitchell was struck down by foul gas in the hold of a steamer at Falmouth. Toye, at great risk, went down with a rope and was successful in saving him.

On the 27^th June 1903, a girl, while wading on the shore at Lytham, suddenly got into deep water. Trenell, at great risk, plunged in and was successful in saving her.

On the 29^th June 1903, a woman fell into the Thames at East Molesey, the depth being 9 feet with a strong stream running. Trevor, at great risk, jumped in and was successful in saving her.

On the 28^th July 1903, Mrs M.Twiss, aged 62, fell from a houseboat into the Sind River, Kashmir, India, the night being dark and the current strong. Her son, Lieut. Twiss, hearing the splash but not knowing who had fallen in, at once jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 6^th August 1903, a boy named Williams fell into the harbour at Dungarvan, the depth being 12 feet with a strong tide. At great risk, Tyndall jumped in fully clothed and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 3^rd December 1902, a seaman belonging to HMS Rattler fell from his ship at Zanzibar. The ship was about half a mile from the shore, and the locality abounds with sharks. Upsidedown and Crow at once jumped in and managed to bring him to the ship’s ladder, and they were got on board.

On the 14^th February 1903, a little girl fell into a crevice in the rocks near Lower St Elmo, Malta. The crevice is 2½ feet wide at the top and 5 feet at the bottom, 15 feet deep, with 10 feet of water in it. Vassallo, at great risk, jumped in and managed to save her.

On the 26^th September 1903, C.W.Baker tripped and fell into the dock in HM Dockyard at Portsmouth, the depth being 26 feet. Waight, at great risk, jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 7^th February 1903, Jas. Waddell, in going on board his ship in the darkness, fell into Millwall Dock. Ward, at great risk, jumped in and was able to get a rope round him, and he was pulled out.

On the 9^th September 1903, a lady got into difficulty while bathing in 15 feet of water 50 yards out at Mundesley. Ward, at great risk, swam out and, after a hard struggle, succeeded in saving her.

On the 11^th July 1903, Fredk. Currier was seized with cramp while bathing in 8 feet of water in a reservoir at St Georges, Shropshire. At great risk, Watkis went to his aid and, with much difficulty, managed to save him.

On the 1^st June 1903, a boy fell into the Thames at Vauxhall, the depth being 12 feet. Watts, at great risk, dived in from the bridge and swam with him to the side.

On the 30^th November 1902, a native named Abantu was washing horses in the sea at Isipingo, Natal, when he was carried out by the current, the sea being rough. Webb and Morkel, at great risk, went out and were successful in saving him.

On the 10^th August 1903, Walter West fell from the rocks into the pool below the Pecca Falls at Ingleton, Yorks. At great risk, his father jumped in from a height of 30 feet and, with much difficulty, was able to rescue him.

On the 25^th June 1903, F.Payne, Chief Stoker, HMS Formidable, fell into the harbour at Malta. At great risk, Whiles jumped overboard and effected his rescue.

On the 24^th May 1903, Ruth Mosely fell into the river Wandle at Wandsworth. Wightman, who is only 4 feet in height, at great risk, jumped in and was able to rescue her.

On the 15^th January 1903, a youth fell into the Thames from the temporary bridge at Vauxhall. It was flood tide and very cold at the time. Wilkins, at great risk, jumped in, caught the lad with his teeth, and swam with him to a barge.

On the 1^st August 1903, a boy named Starkey fell into a clay-pit at Latchford, near Warrington. At great risk, Wilson jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 28^th January 1903, a girl named Sharples in some way fell into the river Ribble at Walton-le-dale. The river was in flood, 7 feet deep, and running strong. At great risk, Winstanley dived in and endeavoured to find her, but failed, and she was drowned.

On the 21^st November 1903, T.Hamilton accidentally fell into the graving dock at Govan, the depth being 15 feet and the water very foul. Wright, at great risk, plunged in and rescued him.
