Adams, F.B., Lieut. S.Nigeria Regt. Case 33154Oyo, Pte. S.Nigeria Regt. On the 6th December 1903, Lieuts. F J Croly and F B Adams, with Pte Oyo, of the S.Nigeria Regt., were in a canoe which capsized on the Cross river at Unwana, West Africa. Lieut Adams and Pte Oyo swam to shore, and then saw that Lieut. Croly was in difficulty. Both men at once went back and found that one of his feet was caught in the bough of a submerged tree. At great risk, they liberated him and got him out in an unconscious state. |
Alli, Somir, Lascar. Case 33101Having been thrown from a capsizing boat into the river at Moulmein he supported his comrade until they were picked up, on the 10th August 1903. |
Alston, John, Engineer. Case 33363On the 1st June 1903, R B Payne was bathing from a boat in the Lanchow River, North China, when he got into difficulty. Alston, at great risk, went to his help and got him back to the boat in an unconscious state. |
Amiram, Vireshvar, Police Constable. Case 33639On the 4th March 1904, a woman, while drawing water, fell down a well at Pandoli, India. The well was 30 feet deep with 8 feet of water in it. At great risk, Amiram jumped down and supported her till they were got out with a rope. |
Ansett, Samuel, Case 33133Saved a boy named McCarthy from the Thames at North Woolwich, on the 18th March 1904. |
Ayres, Richard A.M., 2nd Officer SS Obra. Case 33182Saved a Lascar who fell overboard from the Obra in the Gulf of Lyons, on the 8th July 1903. |
Baker, John C., Assistant Paymaster RN. Case 33092Saved a boy who fell from the tender to the Impregnable at night into the sea at Devonport, on the 15th January 1904. |
Baker, R., Gunner RHA. Case 33358On the 16th July 1904, Gunner Gore RHA became exhausted while swimming in the military pond at Woolwich. Baker, who was also in the pond, at great risk, went to his help, but being clutched was unable to save him, and he was drowned. |
Balaji, Dada, Police Constable. Case 33183Saved a man attempting suicide who threw himself into a tank 16 feet deep at Bombay, on the 16th January 1904. |

Beaver, H.A., Doctor MD. Case 33623On the 2nd October 1904, Miss V W Ellis, while bathing in the sea at Bournemouth, was carried out 40 or 50 yards into 15 feet of water. W Waddington swam out and caught her, but then sank and was drowned. Doctor Beaver then went out, and, at great risk, succeeded in saving her. |
bin-Muini, J., Askarie. Case 33096Saved a Syce from the crocodile infested Thirka River, British East Africa, on the 3rd September 1903. |
Bolitho, F.J., Petty Officer 2nd Class HMS Resolution. Case 33113On the 7th February 1904, a cutter from HMS Resolution capsized in Vigo Bay about 1200 yds from shore in a rough sea. Most of the crew got on the keel of the boat but a seaman was seen drifting away. Bolitho, who was on the keel, went after him but failed to bring him back, he and two others being drowned. |
Boothby, F.L.M., Lieut.RN. Case 33490On the 6th June 1904, a petty officer of HMS Bramble was accidentally knocked overboard from a boat in the Yangtse-Kiang River, China, the water being muddy and 5 fathoms deep. At great risk, Boothby jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat. |
Botha, Miss Annie, of Bloemfontein. Case 33135On the 11th January 1904, a party were fishing with a net at the Begha Mouth of the Great Fish River, Cape Colony, when four of their number were swept off their feet by the rising tide. At great risk Miss Botha went in three times, and after a heroic struggle saved all four. |

Brehout, Thos., Commd. Boatman, HM Coastguard. Case 33456On the 5th August 1904, J W Ward, shipwright, fell overboard from HMS Swiftsure at sea off Penzance. At great risk, Brehout jumped after him, but he sank before being reached. |
Burns, John A.C., Case 33696On the 25th October 1904, John McLeod slipped and fell from a vessel into the James Watt Dock, Greenock, the night being dark and the depth 24 feet. At great risk, Burns jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat. |
Burton, H.E., Lieut. RE. Case 33514On the 19th August 1904, C R Gardner, while bathing in the sea at Tynemouth, was swept out 70 yds into 9 feet of water. G Hutchinson and G Claughton swam out, but were unable to save him. Burton then went out and managed to bring him in. Testimonials on vellum to Hutchinson and Claughton. Burton H.E. Calder, David, Clerk of the Peace, Durban. Case 33132Saved a native from the sea at Winkle Spruit, Natal, with a danger of sharks and a strong under tow, on the 28th February 1904. |
Callaghan, C., Lieut. Case 33159McGowan, S., On the 1st April 1904, W A Edwards, in passing from the pinnace to HMS Kent in Sheerness harbour, fell into the river and was soon carried 200 yds astern by the tide. Lieut Callaghan and Mc Gowan jumped in and rescued him. |

Caton, Percy D., Schoolboy. Case 33572On the 2nd August 1904, W J Mason, while bathing in the Crouch at Hockley, got into difficulty 20 yds out in a strong tide. At great risk, Caton swam out and succeeded in saving him. |
Chirgwin, Edwin, Schoolboy. Case 33209On the 12th May 1904, a boy named Barnes fell into deep water in the sea at Penzance. Chigwin, at great risk, went in and rescued him in an unconscious state. |
Clark, Thomas S., Case 33087Clark, who has only one arm, saved Philip Bell from the Tees at Middlesborough, on the 11th January 1904. |
Clowes, Alfred, Licensed Victualler. Case 33164On the 16th April 1904, a boy named Worthington fell into the Lune at Lancaster and was carried 25 yards out into a depth of 12 feet. Clowes jumped in, and after a swim of 60 yards got him out in an unconscious state, from which R Bleasdale successfully restored him. Certificate to Bleasdale. |

Coupe, Joseph, Case 33367Boyd, R., On the 17th July 1904, two youths were bathing in the Ribble at Preston and got into difficulty. Coupe and Boyd, at great risk, went in and succeeded in saving them. James Salthouse applied artificial respiration and restored them to consciousness. Certificate to Salthouse. |

Day, Rodick St George, Case 33112A man named Briggs fell overboard from a steam launch about 3 miles off East London on the 4th October 1903. The sea being very rough and there also being a danger of sharks, Day jumped in after him and kept him afloat until they were both picked up. |
de Beck, Edwin K., Case 33678On the 15th July 1904, three boys were in a small boat which capsized 300 yards from the shore in Seymour Narrows, British Columbia, the place being very dangerous. At great risk, de Beck got hold of the other two boys, and placing them on the keel of the boat supported them there for 15 minutes, when they were picked up by another boat. |
de Beer, W.J. See Smith, C.A., Case 33169Dickinson, J., Lance Corporal. Case 33631 On the 2nd August 1904, two men, while bathing in the sea at Towyn, got into difficulty, the sea being very rough. Private E Joyner, 2nd Vol. Bn. North Staffs. Regt., swam out to help one of them, but was himself drowned. Donaldson, J.M., Mess Steward SS America. Case 33127On the 18th February 1904, a youth named Campbell, in trying to jump on board a vessel, fell into the Imperial Dock at Leith. At great risk of being crushed against the quay wall Donaldson went down and supported him till they were got out by means of a ladder. |
Donovan, T.J., Boy. Case 33141On the 31st March 1904, Charles Horner, a boy on the Training Ship "Cornwall", accidentally fell overboard off Purfleet, the depth being 30 feet with a 4-knot tide running. At great risk Donovan, another boy, Jumped in from the main deck, but failed to find Horner, who was drowned. |

Drinkell, Arthur, Coal Heaver. Case 33227On the 23rd May 1904, a boy fell into the sewage outfall on the foreshore at Grimsby. Drinkell, at great risk, went in and rescued him. |

Ellwood, W.E., Clerk. Case 33353On the 19th July 1904, H E Slater, while bathing in the sea at Hartlepool, was carried out 70 yards into 12 feet of water. At great risk, Ellwood swam out, and after a struggle lasting 20 minutes, succeeded in saving him. |

Farren, Joseph, Labourer. Case 33478Hebron, J.H.A., Schoolmaster. On the 18th August 1904, a boy named Roberts fell into the sea at Portrush, the depth being 6 to 7 fathoms and no way of getting out without help. At great risk, Farren went in and supported him for some time, but, becoming exhausted, had to let go and the boy sank. Hebron, from Derby, then went in and kept Farren afloat till ropes were got and they were rescued. |
Fitch, Walter, Schoolboy. Case 33186On the 8th April 1904, Thomas Cove, aged 9, fell into the Regent's Canal, Hoxton, the depth at the place being 12 feet. Fitch, aged 12, at great risk, jumped in, fully clothed, and rescued him. |

Francis, George, Case 33083Geo. Rawlins was overcome by fumes in a gas purifier at Penrhwceiber, Glam. Thos. Tansey attempting a rescue also overcome. Geo. Francis went in and with assistance from Jehoiada Howells and Caroline Rawlins got both men out but they died some days later. On the 14th December 1903. Fry, William, Case 33498On the 6th August 1904, a boy named Gowers fell into the Regent's Canal, Hoxton. The canal is here 25 yards wide and 7 feet deep. Fry, aged 15, at great risk, jumped in and rescued him. Within a fortnight Fry succeeded in saving six other lads from the same canal. |
Gibbon, W., Clothier. Case 33491On the 24th August 1904, a woman, while bathing in the sea at Aberystwyth, got into danger 30 yards out in deep water. At great risk, Gibbon from Pontypridd, went in and succeeded in saving her. |
Gibbs,H., Schoolboy. Case 33360On the 20th July 1904, G Sleeman was bathing in a creek at Devonport and got into deep water. Gibbs, aged 14, at great risk, went in and was successful in saving him. Another boy who was bathing at the same time drowned. |
Glynn, Charles E., Case 33116On the 15th February 1904, two youths were in a small boat on the river at Kilrush, Co. Clare, when in shooting the rapids the boat was capsized 20 yards from the bank in a strong stream. At great risk Glynn twice plunged in and was able to save both lads. |
Govind, Dhaji, Police Constable. Case 33675On the 14th August 1904, a woman threw herself into a well at Bombay, the depth being 24 feet with 10 feet of water. Govind jumped in and, at great risk, kept her afloat until they were drawn up. |
Greening, Arthur, Police Constable. Case 33299On the 28th June 1904, an old man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into Duckett's Canal, Old Ford. Greening, at great risk, went in and got him to the bank, when F W Robinson assisted him out and also gave help in restoring him to consciousness. Certificate and pecuniary to Robinson. |
Greig, Donald, Midshipman HMS Leviathan. Case 33677Liddle, F.G., Master-at-Arms HMS Leviathan. On the 5th October 1904, J W Carter, OS on HMS Leviathan, fell overboard as the ship was entering the harbour at Wei-Hai-Wei. At great risk, Greig and Liddle went after him, but failed to find him and he was drowned. |
Hailwood, T.E., Greengrocer. Case 33352On the 16th July 1904, Joseph Byron, an old man of 64, threw himself into a mill reservoir at Bolton, there being a depth of 10 feet and the water very foul. Hailwood, at great risk, dived in many times and at last got him out, but he was dead. |
Hamilton, W., Gunner HMS Emerald. Case 33189On the 15th April 1904, a woman accidentally fell overboard from a launch at Queenstown, the depth being 60 feet, and the night dark. Hamilton jumped in from another launch, caught the woman, and swam with her to shore, 200 yds distant. |
Harris, Joseph, Schoolboy. Case 33215Harris, aged 13, saved Willie Chorley from 10 feet of water in the Lea at Homerton, on the 20th May 1904. |

Harrison, W.C., Lieut. HMS Blonde. Case 33266Connell, J., Boatman. On the 15th June 1904, in an attempt to swim from the pier to his ship at Queenstown, Patrick Neville, stoker, HMS Russell, got into difficulty. Lieut. Harrison, J Connell and J Drummy, AB, went in, and, at great risk, attempted to save him, but failed. Testimonial on vellum to Drummy. |
Harvey, Charles, Boy. Case 33248On the 17th May 1904, W Heywood, aged 7, fell into the Surrey Canal, Canterbury Road. At great risk, Harvey, aged 10, jumped in and was successful in saving him. |
Heselton, H., Boy. Case 33267On the 21st June 1904, Harry Walker, while bathing in the Weaver at Frodsham, Cheshire, got into difficulty in deep water. At great risk, Heselton, aged 12, plunged in and rescued him. |
Hill, Frank, Gunner, Torpedo-Boat No 55. Case 33435On the 17th July 1904, owing to the capsizing of a boat belonging to HMS Forth in Skokes Bay, a woman was thrown into the sea. Hill, at great risk, sprang overboard and kept her afloat till they were picked up. |
Hobden, J.W., Pte. 10th Hussars. Case 33125Saved Bombardier Levi of the RHA from a lake at Mount Abu, India in 30 feet of water, on the 16th July 1903. |
Hodges, Herbert, Petty Officer 1st Class HMS Benbow. Case 33110Saved a man from HMS Revenge who fell overboard off Portland, on the 19th February 1904. |
Hodges, M.H., Commander HMS Hermes. Case 33653On the 2nd October 1904, Commander Melvill RN, was thrown into the sea by a sudden lurch of the pinnace by which he was being conveyed to his ship at Portland. The night was dark and the sea rough. At great risk, Commander Hodges plunged in with a line, but was unable to save him owing to the rough sea. |
Hortis, Stephen, Case 33166On the 20th April 1904, W Allen, while painting the Training Ship "Warspite", fell into the Thames off Greenhithe. Hortis, at great risk, jumped in from a height of 30 feet and supported him till they were picked up by a boat. |
Howgate, Richard, Police Constable. Case 33172On the 23rd April 1904, a man and woman fell from a gangway into the dock at Hull, the night being dark and the depth 20 feet. At great risk, Howgate jumped in and supported them till they were taken into a boat. |
Hunsworth, Lance Corporal. Case 33282Bateson, Private. Edwards, Private. Fox, Private. On the 28th May 1904, two men of the 2nd Bn. Yorkshire Light Infantry were swept away while bathing in a rough sea at Candia, Crete. Hunsworth went out and caught one of them, and Sergeants Moore and Sanderson, with Private Cox , formed a chain and he was got in, but the three men forming the chain were swept out by the backwash. Hunsworth, with Privates Bateson, Edwards and Fox, at great risk, tried to save them but failed, and they were drowned. |
Huntingford, W., 2nd Mate. Case 33320Bronze Clasp. On the 28th June 1904, G W Abbott fell overboard from the steamer Southend Belle when nearing the landing stage at Margate. At great risk, Huntingford jumped in and supported him till they were picked up. |
Hutchison, J.G., 1st Officer. Case 33638On the 23rd February 1904, B Richmond, 2nd officer of the SS Manhattan, was knocked overboard by a bale of cotton at Charleston, USA, rendering himself unconscious by striking a pile. At great risk, Hutchison dived and got him to the surface, when they were assisted from the water. |
James, David, Case 33502On the 18th July 1904, a youth, while bathing in 9 feet of water in the Yearl at Workington, got into difficulty. At great risk, James, who has a wooden leg, went in, but was unable to save him, and he was drowned. |

Jones, T.H., Bricklayer. Case 33337On the 19th June 1904, four men were in a boat which capsized in the canal at Aldershot, there being a depth of 12 feet at the place. Jones, at great risk, went in and rescued two of them, the others being drowned. |
Kader, Abdul, Police Havildar. Case 33064Shakh Mahmud Abdul Kader saved two boys from drowning in the Victoria Dock, Bombay, on the 10th September 1903. |
Keene, Edward, Petty Oficer 1st Class RN. Case 33062Saved a stoker from HMS Albion from drowning off Genson, on the 17th October 1903. |

Kelly, Adrian M., 2nd Officer. Case 33310On the 7th May 1904, the chief engineer of the SS Menantic fell from the wharf into the harbour at Vera Cruz, Mexico, the depth being 30 feet and the place infested with sharks. Kelly dived in with a rope and got him out, but life was extinct. |
Kershaw, Albert, Seaman. Case 33115Attempted to save Geo. Stow who fell from a small boat in the Victoria Lock at Goole on the 25th February 1904, but owing to the sluices being open failed to effect his rescue. |
Khan, Futteh, Lance Naik, Scinde Horse. Case 33512On the 20th March 1904, Kadir Baksh, in trying to recover some kit which had fallen from a raft, fell into an arm of the Pariun River near Jallalabad, India. At great risk, Khan plunged in and rescued him. |

Kyne, John, Schoolboy. Case 33342On the 13th July 1904, Thomas Boyle, while bathing in the sea at Dungarvan, became exhausted 20 yards out in deep water. Kyne, aged 13, at great risk, swam out and kept him afloat till he was picked up by a boat. |
Levy, Vincent, Case 33616On the 18th July 1904, Charles Morris was fishing from the wharf and fell into the harbour at Montego Bay, Jamaica. At great risk Levy, aged 12, jumped in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him. |

Lyndon, G.W., 2nd Officer, SS Albatross of London. Case 33459On the 14th July 1904, a woman fell into the Garonne (sic) at Bordeaux, the tide running strong and the night very dark. Lyndon jumped in, and, by the light of a lantern, found and rescued her. |
Macnamara, Patrick, Salmon Fisher. Case 33153Saved a lad from the river Barrow at New Ross, Co. Wexford, on the 25th March 1904. |
Mal, Dandoo, Contractor. Case 33061Seth Dandoo Mal saved Dad, a camel driver, from drowning in the Chakrali river Baluchistan, on the 23rd July 1903. |
Margerison, Frederick, of Bradford, Yorks. Case 33090Attempted to save Robert C Quin, who was swept from the pier at Ballywhoriskey, Co. Down on the 11th January 1904 and nearly lost his own life in the attempt. |
Marr, W., Driver 52nd Battery RFA. Case 33201Rescued Gunner W Williamson RFA from a tank while bathing at Camp Babina, India, on the 13th January 1904. |
Mawkirk, Jas., Case 33158On the 16th March 1904, a man named Beattie, while working on a ship, fell into the Lagan at Belfast. Samual Neil slid down a rope and pushed out a plank which Beattie failed to reach. At great risk, Mawkirk then jumped in from a height of 33 feet, and was successful in saving him. McVicar, Charles, Case 33359On the 17th July 1904, a boat with five persons on board was capsized on the Thames at Barnes. Four of them were picked up by boats, but the fifth, Charles Biglin, sank in 12 feet of water. McVicar, at great risk, swam out and dived, but was unable to find him and he was drowned. |
Mercer, R., Case 33234On the 23rd May 1904, Hugh Moran threw himself into the canal at Wigan. W Dowey and M Cassidy went to his assistance, but Cassidy took cramp and sank. Mohamad, Gheelam, Boatman. Case 33219On the 27th June 1903, a man, while bathing in the Sutlej at Nangal, India, was swept away by the current, the depth being 40 feet, Mohamad, at great risk, jumped in, and after being carried a mile down the river was able to rescue him. |

Morton, Victor G., Case 33450On the 1st April 1904, three persons were in a boat over which they lost control 300 to 400 yds out in rough sea at Woodstock, Cape Colony. Morton, who has only one arm, swam out and, at great risk, managed to bring them into safety. |
Muhammad, Wali, Syce. Case 33674On the 20th August 1904, a woman fell down a well at Khandiva, India, the well being 73 feet deep with 12 feet of water in it. At great risk, Muhammad let himself down by an old rope and supported her for half an hour, when further help came and they were got out. |

Nana, Tukaram, Police Constable. Case 33640On the 22nd April 1904, a man accidentally fell down a well 35 feet deep with 20 feet of water in it at Junnar, India. At great risk, Nana jumped down and kept him afloat till they were got out with ropes. |
Newcomer, Robert, Labourer. Case 33207On the 5th May 1904, a boy, in going on board a steamer, fell into the Huskisson Dock, Liverpool, and his father, although unable to swim, jumped in after him. At great risk, Newcomer jumped in and kept both afloat till they were picked up. |

Nuttall, J.R., Captain 8th Gurkhas. Case 33124On the 21st June 1903, three officers of the 8th Gurkhas were in a boat on a tank at Manipur, India, when the boat sank 20 yards out, the tank being full of weeds and very dangerous. Nuttall at great risk managed to get Capt. Cassels clear and save him. He then tried to find Lieut. Prior, who had sunk, but was too late to rescue him. |
Oates, John, Constable RIC. Case 33587On the 31st July 1904, J Mullins was bathing in the sea at Ballybunion and got into difficulty. At great risk, Oates swam out, but failed to reach him and also got into danger. A boat with four men now put off, but was capsized in the rough sea. Two of the boat's crew swam ashore, and the Rev. C E Fry, who was also in the boat rescued the fourth man. Oates got in unaided, but Mullins drowned. Testimonial on vellum to Rev. C E Fry. |
O'Brien, F.J., Ordinary Seaman, HMS Venerable. Case 33566On the 4th September 1904, J McDonough was accidentally knocked overboard from the cutter of HMS Venerable off Mitylene, the sea being short and choppy at the time. On the 26th November 1903, four white men and sixteen natives were struck down by the fumes following a blast of nitro-glycerine in a mine at Germiston in the Transvaal. Pettit, Wilson and Bramwell, at great risk, went into the place and succeeded in saving all the white men and thirteen of the natives, the other three being suffocated. |

Smith, C.A., Case 33169de Beer, W.J., On the 18th January 1904, fourteen persons in a wagon drawn by twelve oxen, in trying to cross the Riet River, Griqualand West, South Africa, were swept away by the current. Smith and de Beer, at great risk, succeeded in rescuing six persons, the others, with the team, being drowned. |

Smith, W.J., Constable RIC Case 33593Kiernan, P., Constable RIC. On the 4th September 1904, a boat with four men on board was capsized on Lough Neagh, Co. Tyrone. Two of the men were swept away and drowned. The third man named Coleman, was carried near the shore and saved by John Devlin. Case 33526On the 13th February 1904, John Groat, in trying to repair a damaged ventilator on board the SS Roman while at sea off Ushant, was washed into the hold, where he was overcome by sulphate of ammonia fumes. F G Clench went to his help but was also struck down. Stanford then went down and got Groat out, but he did not recover. Clench also succumbed before being got out. Still, James, Police Sergeant. Case 33206On the 6th May 1904, David Preston entered the hold of a vessel in the Victoria Dock, Leith, and was struck down by foul gas. Peter Brown and Thos. McLaughlin went to his assistance, but were also rendered unconscious. Police Sgt. Still then went down with a rope, which he got round McLaughlin, but was himself overcome, and they were drawn up. The other two men were got out with boat hooks, but only Still recovered. |

Fox with the Rev. T J Garniss, chaplain, were in a boat which capsized in a rough sea off Candia, Crete. Both officers, at great risk, supported the chaplain for some time, and Capt. Barker, of the same Battalion, swam off from the shore, a distance of a quater of a mile, with a life buoy, and with this they kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat. |

Williamson, J., Case 33621On the 30th September 1904, J Coates was struck down by foul gas in a beer vat at the brewery, Kirby Stephen. The vat is 7 feet 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet deep. At great risk, Williamson went to his help, but was also overcome by the fumes. Geo. Marr and Isaac Steel then went in with ropes and got both out, but Coates did not recover.
