Anderson, F. Case 34157

On the 9th July 1905, H.Brook, while bathing in the sea at Morecambe, was swept away, the water being very rough and the depth 20 feet. Anderson was lowered from the pier by a rope and after swimming some distance he caught Brook, and, at great risk, succeeded in getting him into a boat.

Ashfordby-Trenchard, S. Case 33706

On the 7th November 1904, Jean Pady was washed off the groyne opposite the Norfolk Hotel on the sea front at Brighton, there being a strong backwash at the time. Ashfordby-Trenchard, at great risk, plunged in and caught him, but the rough sea swept them apart and Pady was drowned.

Banerji, Babu J.C. Civil Judge. Case 33901

On the 20th December 1904, a man was bathing in the Brahmaputra at Jamalpur, and was carried out into 22 feet of water. Banerji, at great risk, jumped in, and with much difficulty was able to rescue him.

Barton, W.J.J. Case 33889

On the 27th May 1905, G.F.Rogers was bathing in the river at Chelmsford and got into difficulty, the depth being nine to ten feet. Barton, who had been bathing, again went in, and at great risk, attempted to save him, but being clutched, failed, and Rogers was drowned.

Bathie, Herbert. Aged 13. Case 34123

On the 10th August 1905, a boy, while at play, fell into the Thames at the Adelphi Steps, there being an ebb tide and 8 feet of water. Bathie, at great risk, plunged in, fully clothed, and rescued him.

Bhattacharjee, H.C. Student. Case 33789

On the 3rd August 1904, two lads, when trying to swim in the Hugli River, India, were caught by the current and carried away. At great risk, Bhattacharjee went in and rescued one lad, and, again going in, got the other out in an unconscious state.

Biggs, Thomas. Deaf and Dumb. Case 34064

On the 3rd June 1905, Chas. Lloyd fell into the Avon at Bristol, the depth being about 20 feet. Walter Latham went in to try and save him but also got into difficulty. At great risk, Biggs plunged in and was successful in saving both.

Bowyer, Richard. Aged 13. Case 34102

On the 2nd August 1905, Thos. Church accidentally fell into the Thames at Wandsworth, the depth being 7 to 8 feet. At great risk, Bowyer went in and was successful in saving him.

Bridson, Walter. Aged 15. Case 34088

On the 1st August 1905, R.Clague, while bathing in the sea at Derbyhaven, Isle of Man, got into difficulty 25 yards from shore in deep water. Bridson, at great risk, went to his help and succeeded in saving him.

Buchan, Robert. Aged 12. Case 34125

On the 28th July 1905, G.Noble, while in a fit, fell from the pier into the harbour at Fraserburgh, there being a depth of 8 feet at the time. Buchan, at great risk, went in, and with some help from James May, succeeded in saving him.

On the 1st November 1905, a man of the RMLI fell overboard from HMS Canopus in Tetuan Bay. Lieut. Burn, at great risk, jumped in and, with the aid of a lifebuoy, succeeded in saving him.

On the 13th July 1905, Henry A.Smith, while bathing in the sea at Tynemouth, was carried out 80 yards, the sea being rough with a strong backwash. At great risk, Burton swam out and brought him to land.

Campbell, A.St.A. 4th Officer SS Rippingham Grange. Case 33730

On the 24th September 1904, J.Kavanagh, fireman of the same vessel, threw himself overboard shortly after the steamer left New York. Campbell, at great risk, jumped after him, and kept him afloat for 30 minutes, when they were picked up by a boat.

On the 1st June 1905, a landslip took place at Bellair, Natal, carrying a man and a woman with their house into the flooded river, whence they were thrown out on the opposite bank. Campbell crossed the river with a wire rope and conveyed them to a place of safety.

Chainey, G.B. Gunner. Case 34115

On the 23rd June 1905, a man accidentally fell overboard from HMS Vulcan in the Ionian Sea. A lifebuoy was thrown which he failed to reach. Chainey then went after him fully clothed, but he sank before being reached. Gunner Chainey holds the Society’s Stanhope and Silver Medals.

On the 12th June 1905, a woman accidentally fell into the dock at Hull, there being a depth of 20 feet. Chilton, at great risk, jumped in and got a rope round her, but on pulling her up the rope broke, and Chilton then supported her till they were picked up by a boat.

Clarke, Lancelot T. Case 34366

On the 1st June 1905, Alexander Jasson, with a team of six mules and a mail-cart, was trying to cross the Umgazi River, near St. John’s, Cape Colony, when they were swept away by the current, the river being in flood. Clarke, at great risk, went in from the bank and rescued him, afterwards getting all the mules out.

On the 16th July 1905, Claud Allen became exhausted while bathing in the Ouse at St.German’s, Kings Lynn. Clements and Hastings, at great risk, went in, and with considerable difficulty succeeded in bringing him out.

On the 26th June 1905, a stoker named Hughes accidentally fell overboard from HMS Montagu at Torbay. At great risk, Coafee jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 6th May 1905, John Fleming, in the course of his employment, went down a sewer at Dublin, when he was overcome by foul gas. Patrick Sheahan, P.C., went down to try and rescue him, but was also overcome. At great risk, Colman, Rochford, Fitzpatrick, Meier, Murphy, Lambert, Stuart, Whelan, O’Hara, Rush, Kelly, Blake and Jennings went down and attempted to save the two men, but were unsuccessful.

On the 17th July 1905, a boy named Hiller was wading in the Thames at Nine Elms when he got out of his depth and was carried out 30 to 40 yards. Cook, at great risk, swam out, and was successful in saving him.

On the 20th January 1905, six persons fell through the ice on a brick-pond at Parkgate, near Rotherham, the depth being 20 feet and 30 yards from the bank. At great risk, Cooke and France went in and rescued two persons, the others being drowned.

On the 29th August 1904, Agar Singh, while swimming mules in the river at Nowshera, India, took cramp and was being swept away by the dangerous current. Cooper, at great risk, went in and got him to the bank, but efforts at restoration failed.

Cottingham, Jessie P. Aged 15. Case 33734

On the 3rd January 1905, Gertrude Miller, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into an ice-covered pond at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. Cottingham, at great risk, went in and succeeded in rescuing her.

On the 11th June 1905, two boys were thrown into the harbour at Portsmouth, owing to the capsizing of a boat, there eing at the time a strong flood tide. Cousins, Baker and Cousins jumped in, and at great risk succeeded in saving the boys

On the 11th August 1905, Capt. E.S.Carey, Inniskilling Fusiliers, was bathing in the sea at Ramleh, Egypt, and could not regain the shore owing to the strong current. Capt. Crawley swam out and, at great risk, attempted to save him but failed, and he was drowned.

On the 10th December 1904, T.McCarthy, Petty Officer HMS Ariadne, fell overboard from the pinnace at Bermuda. W.F.Owens, OS, and Daly, at great risk, went in and attempted to rescue him, but failed.

Davey, Arthur. Case 33934

On the 25th June 1905, two young women accidentally fell into the canal at Selly Oak, Birmingham, the canal being 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Davey, at great risk, went in and got one of them near the side, when C.Martin assisted in landing her. J.Grice and H.Thompson succeeded in getting the second one out, but she did not recover.

On the 4th January 1905, a boy named Tudor, while at play, fell into the harbour at Solva, Pembrokeshire, there being 16 feet of water, the night dark, and danger of being crushed between a steamer and the quay. At great risk, Davies jumped in and rescued him.

On the 11th September 1905, an unknown man fell into the sea at Southend, the night being dark with a strong tide running. Davis of the SS Yarmouth Belle, which was approaching the pier, at great risk, sprang in and rescued him.

On the 11th September 1905, Emily Firman threw herself into the Lea at Edmonton and sank in 9 feet of water, there being also danger from growth of weeds. Dawson, at great risk, dived in several times, but failed to find her.

On the 19th August 1905, a young lady was bathing at Kilkee, Co. Clare, and was carried out by the current 80 to 100 yards into 20 feet of water. Dawson, at great risk, swam out and rescued her in an exhausted state.

Day, Daniel Junr. Case 33740

On the 16th January 1905, a French ketch was driven on shore at Bonchurch, Isle of Wight. Her crew of five left her in a boat, which was capsized in the heavy sea. At great risk, Day went out with a rope and attempted to save them, but was himself much knocked about, and pulled out in an unconscious state.

On the 15th July 1905, George Bird, while bathing in the Usk at Newport, Mon., was carried away by the strong ebb tide. Dennis, at great risk, went in and brought him some way back, when John V.Powell went in and was able to land him.

On the 26th June 1905, J.Lowden, while trying to swim in a reservoir at Broughton Moor, got into deep water. At great risk, Doggart swam out and was successful in rescuing him.

On the 10th November 1905, Gunner F.A.North, RGA, while fishing from the rocks at Gibralter, was knocked into the sea by a falling stone, the depth being 25 feet. At great risk, Doidge went in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 5th July 1905, Alexander Cameron fell overboard from the SS Waverley in Loch Long. Dougall, at great risk, jumped after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 12th November 1905, George Quinlan was thrown into the harbour at New York owing to the capsizing of a boat. At great risk, Dymock jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Edwards, A. Lance-Corporal R.E. Case 34367

On the 18th June 1905, a Tamil boy was in a boat which was upset 25 yards from shore at Trincomali, Ceylon, the sea being rough and infested with sharks. Edwards swam out and, at great risk, rescued him in an exhausted state.

On the 12th December 1904, an escaped lunatic got into the dock at Dundee, the night being dark and stormy. At great risk, Edwards plunged in and swam with him to a barge, where he hung on till further help came and they were got out.

On the 7th November 1904, a gunner belonging to the Egyptian Gunboat Melik fell into the Nile at Mongalla. Edwards, at great risk, jumped in, but was unable to reach him, and he was drowned.

On the 9th January 1905, Private H.Berry, the Carabineers, was accidentally thrown from his horse into a deep tank at Vadiganhalli, India. At great risk, Emmerson jumped in, fully clothed, and succeeded in saving him.

On the 25th June 1905, Pte.G.A.Mitchell, 1st Royal Fusiliers, got into difficulty while bathing in Stokes Bay, he being in 15 feet of water 50 yards from shore. At great risk, Farnall and Lumley swam out and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 16th July 1905, a French sailor accidentally fell into the sea at Brest. Finch jumped in from a height of 30 feet and rescued him.

Fitch, Walter. Aged 13. Case 33735

On the 7th January 1905, Sydney Peck was pushed into the Regent’s Canal, Hoxton, there being at the place a depth of 8 feet. At great risk, W.Gardiner, aged 11, went in, but was dragged under water by Peck, when Fitch jumped in and succeeded in landing both boys.

Follett, Thomas. Case 33899

On the 18th May 1905, a man named Freak went into a sewer at Rotherhithe and was overcome by foul gas. Follett, a fellow workman, tried to find him, but failed, and was also struck down at the bottom of the manhole. Thos. Bassett got a rope round him and he was pulled out. J.E.Coleman and T.Standen also tried to find Freak, but failed.

Ford, Edward C. Case 34020

On the 17th July 1905, a boy about 14, while bathing in the river at Hull, was carried away by the tide, the depth being some 10 feet. Ford, at great risk, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

Forster, A.F. Deputy Health Officer. Case 33792

On the 28th December 1904, owing to the capsizing of a sampan, two children were thrown into the harbour at Hong Kong. At great risk, Dr. Forster plunged in, and with much difficulty was able to rescue them in an unconscious state, from which he afterwards restored them.

On the 6th July 1905, Private W.F.Clarke, 4th Batt. Northumberland Fusiliers, got into difficulty while bathing 300 yards from shore in 25 feet of water at Feint, Co.Kerry. Forsyth, who was also bathing, succeeded in keeping him afloat till they were taken into a boat.

Gardner, John. Case 33841

On the 25th February 1905, an explosion took place in a room on the premises of the Co-operative Society at Blackley, near Manchester, liberating a quantity of ammonia fumes. Two men and a boy were in the room at the time. Gardner, one of the men, got out and then returned twice and at great risk rescued his two comrades, who had been struck down.

On the 8th September 1905, five persons were thrown into the sea at St. Helier’s, Jersey, owing to the capsizing of a boat. At great risk, Gatherer and Blandy supported Miss Blandy till they were picked up by a boat. Toms had meanwhile supported H.Goudge for some time and then left to get a lifebuoy, when he sank and was drowned.

Geary, Daniel. Case 33895

On the 3rd June 1905, two lads accidentally fell into the Lee at Lavitt’s Quay, Cork, there being at the time a depth of 10 feet. Geary, at great risk, swam out, and was able to bring both nearer the bank, where Andrew Murphy gave assistance in getting them out.

On the 14th August 1905, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from HMS Assistance when at sea. At great risk, Gibson jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

Gillett, Charles. Tug-boat Master. Case 33908

On the 16th June 1905, a boy named Thomas accidentally fell into the Cumberland Basin at Bristol, the depth being 18 to 20 feet, and the water some 16 feet below the quay level. Gillett, at great risk, jumped in and caught him, when a rope was thrown, by which they were towed to a landing.

On the 1st June 1905, a man named Pritchard, whilst under the influence of drink, fell into the Orwell at Ipswich. At great risk, Glading went in, and succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 10th April 1905, A J Freestone, Petty Officer, HMS Nymphe, fell overboard off Sheerness, the depth being five fathoms and the ship steaming nine knots. At great risk, Gofton-Salmon at once jumped after him, but failed to reach him, and he was drowned.

Gorman, Reginald. Case 34340

On the 12th August 1905, C.L.Crapp, while bathing in the Tamar at Saltash, slipped into 14 feet of water. Gorman, at great risk, went in, fully clothed, and succeeded in saving him.

Grech, Francis. Corporal Royal Malta Artillery. Case 34351

On the 29th September 1905, a youth, while bathing in the sea at Malta, lost a lifebelt he had taken with him and sank in 20 feet of water. Grech, at great risk, went in, fully clothed, and rescued him, and then restored him.

On the 14th July 1905, three youths, while bathing in the Thames at Deptford, got into difficulty, there being a depth of 10 feet at the time. Green, at great risk, went in and succeeded in rescuing all three.

On the 19th September 1905, C.E.Bembridge, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself from the pier at Aberystwith, with the depth being 20 feet, the night dark and the sea rough. At great risk, O and R Green jumped in and were successful in saving him.

On the 30th September 1905, a trawler was wrecked at Papa Westray, Orkney, there being a tremendous sea at the time. Groat and Hume, at great risk, went on the rocks and were successful in saving a man named Melin, who was washed within reach by the waves.

On the 31st July 1905, two lads were bathing in the lake at Crystal Palace and got into difficulty in 12 feet of water. Grogan, at great risk, went in, and saved one lad, and also attempted to save the other, who was drowned.

On the 10th July 1905, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Medway at Chatham, the distance from the landing being 80 yards and the depth 20 feet. At great risk, Gurton and Finnis jumped in, and were successful in saving her.

On the 18th January 1905, John Smith and his child accidentally fell into the Trent at Gainsborough, the night being dark and the depth 12 feet. At great risk, Hanks jumped in and supported them till further help came and they were got out.

Harris, Claire H. Miss. Case 34211

On the 16th August 1905, three young ladies were bathing in the sea at Greystones, Co.Dublin, when one of them, Miss M.MacDowell, got into difficulty in 30 feet of water. Florence Crawford tried to save her but failed. At great risk, Miss Harris then went to her help and with difficulty succeeded in landing her.

On the 18th March 1905, Frank Dear, stoker, HMS Good Hope, in assisting to hoist out a boat, was dragged overboard in Portland Roads. Harris jumped in from a height of 29 feet, and, at great risk, kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 12th April 1905, a milk-girl, in going ashore from a steamer at Swansea, fell from a ladder to the quay and then rolled into the dock in an injured state. Harris, at great risk, plunged in and succeeded in rescuing her.

On the 25th March 1905, R.Birkett, while at work at a lime-kiln at Dacre, Cumberland, accidentally fell in, and his feet became fast amongst the contents of the kiln. At great risk, Harrison went in and was successful in liberating him and getting him out.

On the 18th March 1905, a youth, while bathing at the mouth of the Salt River, Cape Colony, was carried out by the tide into 12 feet of water. Hengst swam out, and, at great risk, succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 15th March 1905, a Norwegian vessel was driven on shore at Pettycur, Fife. Her crew of seven endeavoured to land in their own boat, but this was capsized in the rough sea some distance from shore. Hinds, Goodier, Jones and Ward all went in and succeeded in saving all the men.

Hitchin, Horace H. Case 34016

On the 13th July 1905, a little boy named Hitchin, while fishing from the bank, fell into the Ouse at York. At great risk, his brother, Horace Hitchin plunged into deep water and rescued him.

Hogg, Robert. Case 33793

On the 21st March 1905, four children fell into the Tyne at Gateshead, owing to the fence giving way. Thomas Fenwick, aged 13, gallantly jumped in and tried to save one of them, but failed. Hogg then went in and rescued two of them, when a man who could not swim jumped in, and, being at once in danger, clutched Hogg, who with much difficulty freed himself and got the man out, the other two children being drowned.

On the 8th August 1905, L.W.Adkins fell overboard from the P & O tender off Woosung, China, it being dark at the time and a three-knot tide running. Holloway, at great risk, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 19th January 1905, a number of boys were in the ice on a pit at Leigh, when a break took place and 10 of them fell in, the depth being 7 feet. At great risk, Houghton went in and rescued 7 of the boys, the other 3 being drowned.

On the 19th June 1905, a boy accidentally fell into the reservoir at Hendon, the depth being 20 feet, with a strong undercurrent. Humphreys, at great risk, went in, fully clothed, and after swimming 50 yards, succeeded in saving him.

On the 15th November 1905, a man named Holley had in some way got into a limekiln at Burlescombe, Devon, the kiln being alight and 6 to 7 feet deep. Jarman, at great risk, went in and succeeded in getting him out, but life was extinct.

Jaycock, E.L.J. Case 34107

On the 20th July 1905, H.F.A.Beetham, while bathing in the sea at Ramsgate, got into difficulty. Jaycock swam out and rescued him. On 24th July J.W.Simpson, while bathing at the same place, got into danger. Morris Crow went to his help but was drowned, after which Jaycock went in, and, at great risk, tried to save him, but failed.

On the 8th August 1905, Charles Soper was washed off the rocks at Polperro, Cornwall, the sea being very rough. Jolliff plunged in and with much difficulty succeeded in landing him.

On the 27th June 1905, a man named Hesketh accidentally fell down a well at Bolton, the depth being 140 feet, with 10 to 15 feet of water at the bottom. At great risk, Jones and Edge went down and managed to get him out, but life was extinct.

On the 5th July 1904, two women got into difficulty in the Karli Canal at Taluka Tatta, India, there being a depth of 9 feet. Kadoo went in and, at great risk, succeeded in rescuing both.

Kavanagh, P. Able Seaman. Case 33733

On the 29th December 1904, N.McNamara, AB, HMS Emerald, fell into the harbour at Queenstown, the night being dark and a strong tide running. At great risk, Kavanagh jumped in, but was unable to effect his rescue.

On the 29th November 1904, two men fell overboard from a fishing boat in the dock at North Shields. Kay jumped in and attempted to rescue them, but failed, and they were drowned.

On the 9th January 1905, a boy named Ryan, while skating on the harbour at Canso, Nova Scotia, was blown into an open part where the depth was 24 feet. At great risk, Kennedy plunged in, and was successful in saving him.

On the 7th October 1905, a boy named Rose, while fishing fell into the sea at Gorleston. James Gill, HM Coastguard, went in to try and save him, but was swept away and drowned. At great risk, Keymer then went in and supported him till he was taken into a boat, Keymer himself swimming ashore.

On the 15th July 1905, a fall of roof took place in the Wood Farm Colliery, Bloxwich, by which a large quantity of sand and water was let into the workings in which a number of men were employed. On the 10th June 1905, four youths were in a boat which was capsized in a rough sea at Hayle. Two of them were drowned, the third kept himself up with an oar, the fourth, named Trythall, got into the boat, but was washed out. Spray then swam out, and, getting into the boat, kept her head to the wind till another boat came out and picked them up.

On the 21st April 1905, two boys named McRuvie and Swinton were washed from the pier at Anstruther by a heavy sea. Thomas Pratt at once let himself down by a chain and rescued McRuvie, but Swinton was carried out beyond the pier-head. Sutherland, after running a quarter of a mile, plunged in, and having caught him, kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 1st July 1905, a man fell into the sea from the pier at Kirkwall, Orkney. Wood, at great risk, jumped in, dislocating his arm in doing so, but he managed to hold the man till a rope was thrown, which he caught with his teeth and both were got out.

On the 23rd March 1905, a Customs guard was thrown into the harbour at Pernambuco owing to the capsizing of a boat. Knowing the risk from the sharks which infest the harbour, Woodworth jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.
