On the 6th August, 1907, F. Curnow was bathing in the sea at Penzance, when he got into difficulty 30 yards out in 10 feet of water. C.G.W. Adson, aged 13, swam out fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

Ali, Zaman, Sapper, 1st P.W.O. Sappers and Miners   Case 35456

On the 9th October, 1906, Captain R.M. Elles, Royal Engineers, in an attempt to save a man who had got into difficulty in the Ganges Canal at Roorkee, India, got into a whirpool and eventually lost his own life. Sapper Zaman Ali 1st P.W.O. Sappers and Miners, gallantly went to his help but was unable to save him.

On the 10th March, 1907, a man in trying to get on board the ferry steamer from a boat, fell into the Irrawaddy at Saigaing, Upper Burma. Annar Ally, B. Tindal, A. Jubbar and S. Ahmed all went into the river and were success ful in saving him.

On the 26th July, 1907, Arthur Jones, while bathing in the sea at Traethsaith, was carried out some 40 yards, the sea being too rough to launch a boat. Elliott Armstrong swam out and succeeded in bringing him to land.

On the 30th November, 1906, a Kaffir, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into a rough sea at Hoetjee, Cape Colony, and was carried out, 100 yards from shore. Sergeant Charles Baker, Mounted Police, swam out and succeeded in rescuing him.

On the 18th July, 1907, a boy fell into the sea from the slope in front of Southsea Castle. J.W. Barnes Gunner, R.G.A., went in and was successful in landing him.

On the 23rd September, 1907, G.A.Smith, A.B., was thrown into the sea off the Longsands by the capsizing of a target. A.C. Barrett, H.M.S. Vindictive, and D. Brown, H.M.S. Bulwark, plunged in, but were unable to rescue him, and he was drowned.

Battacharjee, S.K., aged 8   Case 35719

On the 6th July, 1907, a girl fell down a well at Bhatpara, India, the depth being 16 feet with 5 feet of water in it. S.K. Bhattacharjee, aged 8, went down, and succeeded in bringing her to the surface.

On the 23rd July, 1907, a man named Prior was testing gas syphons in a well, or pit, at the Manchester Gas works, when he was overcome by an escape of gas. J.H. Bell and W. Surry went to his assistance, but being also struck down failed to save him, they themselves being got out in an unconscious state.

On the 18th September, 1906, during a typhoon, a coolie was blown into the water at Hong Kong, a number of Chinese being also in danger on a mass of wreckage. H.S. Bevan went in and rescued the coolie, while David Gourlay was successful in saving several lives.

On the 13th September, 1907, E. Kermode, belonging to the R.N.R., fell overboard from the Harwich steamer into the Scheldt at Baarland, there being an ebb tide and the night dark. Egide Bogaert, a Belgian Pilot, plunged in and managed to get him into a boat.

On the 31st October, 1907, a man named Fellick fell from his barge into Wapping Basin, London Docks, the depth being 20 feet. Edward Boss, Lockman, jumped in, and succeeded in keeping him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 30th March, 1907, a man named Bryant was overcome by foul gas in a well which he was sinking at Bramshaw, Hants. The well was only 4 feet in diameter and 57 feet deep. William Boyce, a fellow workman, was lowered in the bucket and remained at the bottom while Bryant was being pulled up and was then himself drawn up.

On the 10th October, 1907, Thos. Smith fell into the sea from the South Parade Pier at Southsea, the sea being very rough with baulks of floating timber. Lieutenant A. Bromley H.M. Yacht Victoria and Albert and L. Richardson, Coastguardsman, went in, but were unable to save him, and he was drowned.

Paterson, J.

On the 8th August, 1907, a party of boys were bathing in the sea at Shanklin, when three of them were carried away, as well as F.C.C. Longmore, who was also bathing. The Reverend R.W. Bullock and J. Paterson went in and rescued Longmore, while Arthur Chapman lost his life in an attempt to save the boys.

Shortly after midnight on the 7th October, 1907, a man in an attempt at suicide threw himself from Blackfriars Bridge into the Thames. Thos. Burns, ship's fireman, jumped from the bridge and was successful in saving him.

Cameron, John, Constable Metropolitan Police   Case 35105

On the 3rd December, 1906, a woman named Andrews threw herself into the Lea at Bow Bridge and sank, the depth being 7 feet and the water very foul. John Cameron, Constable Metropolitan Police, dived in, and finding her at the bottom got her out in an unconscious state and then restored her.

On the 8th November, 1907, an A.B. fell overboard from H.M.S. Euryalus, at the entrance to Marsa Scirocco harbour, Malta. C.W. Capelin, A.B., and Commander J.W.L. M'Lintock, jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Carberry, Michael, Constable Royal Irish Constabulary   Case 35137

On the 7th December, 1906, Patrick Keane, aged 70, fell from the pier into 15 feet of water at Kinavarra, co. Galway. Michael Carberry plunged in and brought him back to the pier where they were pulled out.

On the 25th December, 1906, an old man called Williamson fell into the Old Dock at Leith, there being a depth of 13 feet of water at the time. William Carrick at once jumped in and kept him afloat till they were pulled out by means of a rope.

On the 17th March, 1907, Frank Hopwood accidentally fell into the sea at Sea Point, Cape Colony, the place being very dangerous. George P. Casse ran to the place, and at once plunging in succeeded in saving him.

On the 26th February, 1907, Miss L.E. Griffith, being of unsound mind, threw herself into the Mawddach river, near Barmouth, the depth being about 12 feet. Mrs L.J. Casson went in and succeeded in bringing her to the side.

Cattley, Harold   Case 35160

On the 9th February, 1907, two boys named Clark and Taylor fell through the ice on Hornsea Mere. Clark got out, and in trying to save Taylor got in again and was drowned. Geo. and Ernest Taylor in trying to save them also fell in, and were in danger. E. Coulson went in to try and save them but failed. Harold Cattley then succeeded in saving Ernest Taylor, George Taylor being got out with the help of a ladder.

Chapman, R.A.B., Civil Servant   Case 35457

On the 30th April, 1907, a youth went into a tank at Seoni, Central India, in order to recover some cocoa-nuts, and became entangled in the weeds 15 to 20 yards from the bank. R.A.B. Chapman, Civil Servant, went in, and was successful in saving him, and also brought out two other men who had gone in to help the lad.

On the 8th Februay, 1907, a stoker belonging to H.M.S. Haughty fell overboard in the basin in Chatham Dockyard, the time being 2.15 a.m. and the night very cold. Lieutenant G.K. Chetwode plunged in from the ship and supported him till the ropes were got and they were pulled aboard.

On the 11th July, 1907, a boat with seven persons on board was upset by a squall in the Gulf of Georgia, British Columbia. Jacob Chipps made a gallant attempt to save a woman and her child but failed, and only reached land after being nine hours in the water.

Clarkson, John   Case 35697

On the 11th Serptember, 1907, a girl, while punting a boat on the river at Knaresborough, fell overboard, the depth being 8 to 10 feet with a running stream. John Clarkson went in, and, after diving, succeeded in saving her.

Clegg, Jacob, Police Constable   Case 35517

On the 14th August, 1907, a man named Sharples went down a manhole into a culvert at Bolton to clear away some obstruction, and was struck down by foul gas. Jacob Clegg, Police Constable, went down, and with much difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 22nd August, 1907, two ladies, while bathing in the sea at Woolacombe, were swept out 200 yards by the strong undercurrent. Maurice Cohen swam out twice, and was successful in saving both.

On the 2nd September, 1907, a girl after landing from a pleasure steamer at Blairmore, Loch Long, walked over the pier, the night being very dark. E.H. Collinge plunged in, and was successful in saving her.

On the 25th January, 1907, a boat with six men on board which was being towed by H.M.S. Wizard, capsized at sea, near the Tongue Lightship; three men kept themselves afloat till picked up. G.E. Cotton jumped from the ship and rescued one man. Neil M'Queen and G.T. Bentley also jumped in, but failed to reach the other two men, who were drowned.

Cundy, Claude W.   Case 35303

On the 2nd June, 1907, J. Geldart was in a boat which was jammed on the weir in the Trent at Nottingham. In trying to save himself he was carried over the weir, the river being in flood and 20 feet deep. Claude W. Cundy plunged in and caught him, but was carried 60 yards down stream before he could reach the bank.

On the 2nd September, 1906, a woman threw herself into a tank at Dumka, India, and sank in 10 feet of water. Abani M. Das, Sub-Inspector of Police, dived in, and at the third attempt succeeded in saving her.

Derker, H.C.G., Constable, S.A.C.   Case 35205

On the 4th February, 1907, Thos. Kroon, of the S.A. Constabulary, in attempting to cross the Juski river, Transvaal, was washed from his horse and was being carried away by the stream. Constable H.C.D. Derker, who had also been unhorsed in the river but had got out again, plunged in and rescued his comrade.

On the 10th December, 1906, a boy fell down a well 31 feet deep with 18 feet of water in it, at Ladha, India. Imam Din jumped in and supported him till a rope was got, by which they were drawn up.

Dooley, Patrick, only able to use one hand   Case 35229

On the 27th March, 1907, John Nolan accidentally fell into the river Barrow at New Ross, co. Wexford, and was carried out 40 yards into 25 feet of water. Patrick Dooley, who could only use one hand, plunged in and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 20th October, 1907, R. Morgan fell from the quay into the Tees at Stockton, the depth being 22 feet with a strong tide running. Francis Dunn plunged in, and supported him till they were picked up by the ferry boat.

Earle, Allan, Gunner, H.M.S. Adventure   Case 35257

On the 8th April, 1907, a stoker, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself from H.M.S. Adventure into the harbour at Sheerness. Allan Earle, Gunner, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Elliott, Newlyn M.   Case 35574

On the 9th September, 1907, Ellen A. Parker, while bathing in the sea at Southbourne, was carried out 200 yards into deep water. Newlyn M. Elliott swam out and caught her, and with some help got her to land.

Everson, Henry   Case 35683

On the 12th September, 1907, Samuel Barrett, while at work on a scaffold some 30 yards from the bottom of the shaft at the Penalta Colliery, near Cardiff, was thrown down into 12 feet of water. Henry Everson went down the shaft, over 90 yards clinging to a 4-inch pipe, and got Barret into a barrel, by which they were drawn up.

On the 27th Februay, 1907, a man jumped overboard from the s.s. Britannia, in the Forth, off Boness. W.M. Finnie, Chief Officer, at once sprang after him and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Fowler, Robt.   Case 35148

On the 19th January, 1907, a man accidentally fell into Burrard Inlet, Vancouver, British Columbia, the depth being 30 feet with a strong tide. Robt. Fowler plunged in, and after diving, succeeded in bringing him to the bank.

Frater, Henry E.   Case 35119

On the 1st January, 1907, a boy named Robinson fell through the ice on a pond at Epsom, the water being deep and 12 yards from the side. Henry E. Frater went on the ice and got him out, when another break took place and both fell in. Frater then got the boy out on to the ice and afterwards got out himself.

On the 27th February, 1907, two boys fell into the river at Daspoort, near Pretoria, Transvaal. W.L. Gandy, Constable, South African Constabulary, went in and was successful in saving them both.

On the 7th August, 1907, a youth fell into the Thames at Putney, where the strong tide soon carried him out into deep water. Geo. Gibson swam out, and, after being clutched, was successful in saving him.

Gibson, R.B.   Case 35154

On the 3rd February, 1907, Richard Jordan, while skating on the Lune at Lancaster, fell through the ice 25 yards from the side, the depth being 20 feet. Harry Etchells, in trying to save him, also fell through the ice and lost his life. R.B. Gibson also tried to save Jordan and was himself only got out with difficulty by Gordon Riding, who managed to throw him a rope. Jordan in the end was also drowned.

Godden, John R., Leading Seaman, H.M.S. Terrible,   Case 35192

On the 14th February, 1907, Richard Smith, O.S., fell from a stage on H.M.S. Terrible into No. 5 Basin in Portsmouth Dockyard. John R. Godden Leading Seaman of the same ship, jumped in from a torpedo boat, and having caught Smith swam with him to the boat, where he was hauled aboard.

On the 18th September, 1906, the s.s. Hengshau was driven on shore on San Chan Island, Hong Kong, during a typhoon. E.H. Grainger and A. Harvey exerted themselves in the saving of life, the passengers to the number of nearly 600 being, with two exceptions, landed in safety.

On the 13th July, 1907, Henry W. White was thrown into the sea off Swanage owing to his yacht being run down by a steamer. Richard Grant, who was also on the yacht, swam to his help and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Stevens, Albert B.

On the 6th May, 1907, Geo. Bowler went down a manhole 24 feet deep into a sewer at Burnham, Bucks, and was struck down by foul gas. Richard Grantham went down to his help but was also overcome by the deadly gas. Albert B. Stevens then descended and succeeded in saving Grantham. He then managed to bring Bowler out, but he was dead.

On the 14th September, 1906, a man fell from a gangway into the harbour at Hong Kong, the night being dark and the depth 40 feet. Ernest M. Hawkins, 4th Officer R.M.S. Empress of Japan jumped in from a height of 20 feet and succeeded in saving him.

On the 7th August, 1907, a man named Hugo threw himself into the Mersey at New Brighton, there being a depth of 10 to 15 feet with a strong ebb tide. W.H. Hawkins, O.S., H.M.S. Triumph, plunged in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Henderson, Ralph, 2nd Officer, s.s. City of Glasgow   Case 35324

On the 12th March, 1907, Mrs F. Lovell threw herself overboard from the s.s.City of Glasgow in the Indian Ocean. Ralph Henderson, 2nd Officer of the steamer, jumped in and caught her, but owing to the suction from the screw had to let go, and was with difficulty picked up.

On the 14th August, 1907, G.R. Byron was on the abutment of a bridge which gave way, throwing him into the flooded river at Trichur, India. R.B. Hewson, Assistant Engineer, Madras Railway, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 21st June, 1906, a native girl accidentally fell down a well at Telnal, India, the well being nearly 30 feet deep with 9 feet of water in it. Govind Hiraji, P.C., jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 22nd September, 1907, a man in some way fell into the river Aare at Thonne, Switzerland. Major H.C. Holman, Indian Army, who was present, at once jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

Houghton, Frederick, Petty Officer 1st Class,Torpedo-Boat Destroyer Ferret   Case 35118

On the 12th December, 1906, J.V. Rundle fell overboard from the Torpedo-Boat Destoyer Ferret off Berry Head, the sea being rough and the vessel steaming 6 knots at the time. Frederick Houghton, Petty Officer 1st Class jumped in and brought him back to the ship, but he did not recover.

On the 6th June, 1907, during a cyclone at Karachi, India, a sailing boat was in extreme danger of being dashed under a pier. Francis Joseph, a Lascar, jumped with a line on to a floating buoy, thus securing the boat and saving life.

On the 7th January, 1907, two men belonging to the Royal Army Medical Corps., when bathing in the Vaal river, near Standerton, Transvaal, got into difficulty in 10 feet of water. Private Thos. Kerr, Royal Army Medical Corps, who was also bathing, went to their help and was able to rescue both.

On the 3rd February, 1907, A. Harrison, while skating on the Lune at Lancaster, fell through the ice, the river being here very deep and treacherous. John A. Kitchen went out on the ice to try and rescue him when another break took place, and he himself fell in. Harrison was drowned and Kitchen was with difficulty got out.

On the 2nd July, 1906, C. Reveler was in a bark canoe which capsized on the Columbia river, British Columbia, the depth being 20 feet with a strong current running. Victor Kootenay and Victor Sk-kum, Indian Youths, both plunged in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 5th August, 1906, a child fell from a boat into the Narbada river, Mandla Dist., India, the depth being 50 feet with a strong stream running. Seth Badde Lal jumped in, and with some help from Jhitu, who also went in, succeeded in saving him.

On the 28th September, 1907, W.J. Pullen, Petty Officer, H.M.S. London, fell from a boat into the sea off Margate. There was a strong tide and the night was dark. Lieutenant C.C. Lambert plunged in, but failed to find him, and he was drowned.

On the 5th July, 1907, a native child fell from a bridge into the river at Gurias, Kashmir, India, the river being in flood from the melting snow on the hills. Mrs M.A.M. Laverton plunged in from the bank and was successful in saving the child.

Shortly after midnight on the 20th July, 1907, a man named Beer fell into the harbour at Plymouth, there being a depth of 15 feet at the time. Charles Leat, P.C., plunged in and supported him till they were taken into a boat.

Lebbe, Uduma L.M.   Case 35742

On the 28th October, 1906, the river Mahaweliganga overflowed its banks at Gampola, Ceylon, and many persons were in great danger. Uduma L.M. Lebbe and P. Pinhamy exerted themselves in the saving of life, and succeeded in taking Ninety-six persons to safety.

On the 12th June, 1907, Jesse Hunt fell from a barge into the Thames at Wapping, there being at the time a strong tide and a depth of 25 feet. Geo. S. Lewis swam out 50 yards, and, getting into a boat, picked up Hunt and put him on his own barge.

On the 6th October, 1907, a man threw himself into the Medway from the esplanade at Stroud, there being a depth of 10 feet. W.A. Mackay, private R.M.L.I., plunged in and rescued him.

On the 4th May, 1907, a boat with nine men on board was capsized on the Tyne at Hebburn, 30 yards from the side, in 15 to 20 feet of water. W.T. Martin, Isaac Neilson and D.R. Blaylock jumped in from the ferry steamer and supported all the men till they were picked up.

On the 30th April, 1907, a boat with six men on board was capsized in Portsmouth Harbour. C.F. M'Culloch, Leading Seaman, H.M.S. Vulcan, jumped in and supported a man named Macdonald till they were picked up.

On the 20th May, 1907, W.T. Davies, while bathing in the Tivy, St. Dogmaels, Cardigan, got into difficulty 30 yards from the side and 12 feet deep. W.T. Morgan went in, and after being clutched, was successful in saving him.

On the 20th July, 1907, R.H. Alford, while bathing in the Avon at Downton, Wilts, was seized with cramp 9 yards from the bank in 7 feet of water. Doran H. Morris, aged 14, went in, and after being pulled under was successful in bringing him to land.

On the 16th May, 1907, J. Gillard threw himself from H.M.S. Antrim into No. 3 Basin in Chatham Dockyard, the depth being 35 feet and the water very cold. Jas Murray, Stoker 1st Class, went in and tried to save him but failed, and he was drowned.

At 2 a.m. on the 13th March, 1907, an A.B. named Brookling fell overboard from H.M.S. Ostrich in Stokes Bay, the night being dark with heavy rain. Sub-Lieutenant W.M. Nash jumped in and succeeded in keeping him afloat till they were picked up.

Shortly after midnight on the 11th November, 1907, a woman threw herself into the Regent's Canal, Hoxton, there being a dense fog at the time. Charles Palfrey jumped in, and, after a hard struggle, rescued her.

On the evening of the 23rd May, 1907, a cyclone broke over the Port of Bahrein in the Persian Gulf, wrecking many native craft whose crews were being swept seaward. C.S. Penny and M.E.S. Thompson, belonging to the British India Steam Navigation Co's s.s. Ula, which was anchored in the Port, went over the side with life-buoys, and between them saved 25 Arabs from the rough shark-infested sea.

On the 7th August, 1907, Nellie Morton, while bathing in Cemaes Bay, Anglesey, got into the strong undertow and was carried out 50 yards, the sea being rough. Benjamin A. Peters swam out, and with much difficulty brought her to land.

Phillips, Frederick G.   Case 35339

On the 11th July, 1907, a boy named Derrick fell into the mill race at Pateley Bridge, there being great danger of being drawn under the mill wheel. Frederick G. Phillips went in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 27th May, 1907, Gunner J. Roberts, R.G.A., went to bathe in the sea at Cross Island, Bombay, and was carried away by the strong tide. B. Sambhoo and D. Balu swam out and were successful in saving him.

On the 7th May, 1907, a woman fell down a well at Manguna, India, the depth being 20 feet with 9 feet of water. A. Samji, P.C., jumped down and supported her till a rope was got, and they were pulled up.

On the 2nd November, 1906, Sergeant Thos. Cooling, 2nd Battn. King's Royal Rifles, was bathing in the Kosi river, India, and got into difficulty owing to the strong current. Lance Sergeant E. Saunders of the same Bttn., plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 3rd May, 1907, A.P. Truscott, an A.B., threw himself from a boat into Portsmouth harbour. Henry Sayce, Petty Officer, H.M.S. Excellent, jumped in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

Scantlebury, H.M., Customs Officer   Case 35193

On the 16th March, 1907, a small boat was capsized in the harbour at Queenstown, throwing two men of the R.G.A. into the sea, which was very rough. H.M. Scantlebury, Customs Officer, jumped in from his launch, and with the help of a lifebuoy kept both men afloat till they were picked up.

On the 26th March, 1907, Jennie Hill was thrown into the Surrey Canal at Rotherhithe by her sweetheart, the time being nearly midnight and the water very foul. Conrad Scott, Police Constable, went in fully clothed and succeeded in saving her.

On the 2nd June, 1907, W. Mathers was washed overboard from H.M.S. Garry in the Bristol Channel, the sea being rough. W.M'Donnell jumped after him, but could not effect the rescue and lost his own life, F.R. Scrutton then plunged in and supported him till they were picked up, but he was then dead.

On the 27th October, 1907, a boy fell from a landing stage into the Thames at Southwark, the depth being 12 feet with a strong tide. James H. Setter, Constable, Metropolitan Police, jumped in and rescued him.

On the 14th November, 1906, a man in an attempt to escape from custody, jumped into the harbour at Port Antonio, Jamaica, the depth being 3 to 4 fathoms, and the place aboundig with sharks. Coporal C.A. Smith, Water Police, at once plunged in and succeeded in landing him.

On the 29th August, 1907, two men went down a well, 54 feet deep, at Umballa, India, in order to try and save a boy who had fallen down. Ram Summon and G. Singh went down, and were successful in saving them, but the boy was dead when got out.

On the 16th November, 1906, H. Sydenham was swept overboard from the s.s. Alleghany at sea, there being a heavy gale blowing at the time. S. Sydenham chief officer of the steamer, took a lifebuoy, and jumping in kept him afloat for half an hour when they were picked up by a boat.

On the 15th May, 1907, a woman in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Liffey at Dublin, the tide being full and the depth 20 feet; James Synnot plunged in fully clothed, and was successful in saving her.

On the 15th November, 1907, a man threw himself into the harbour at Karachi, India, the night being dark, a strong tide, and danger from sharks. Captain C.H. Taylor, York and Lancaster Regiment, and D.F. James, 2nd Officer, Transport Rewa, jumped in, and with the aid of a lifebuoy got him on board, but he did not recover.

Thomas, Charles H., A.B. s.s. Royal Sovereign   Case 35476

On the 5th August, 1907, a man named Jerman was knocked overboard from his barge in the Thames off Rotherhithe, the tide being very strong at the time. Charles H. Thomas, A.B. on the s.s. Royal Sovereign, jumped from the steamer, but failed to find him and he was drowned.

Thomas, Owen, Corporal, South African Constabulary   Case 35167

On the 11th January, 1907, T.E. Turner with his horse was swept away while trying to cross the Mabola river at Wakkerstroom, South Africa, the river being in flood and 12 to 14 feet deep. Corporal Owen Thomas, S.A.C., went in fully clothed, and at the second attempt succeeded in saving him.

On the 7th October, 1906, Alam Khan went into the Ganges Canal at Roorkee to liberate a fishing hook which had become fast when he got into a whirpool 16 feet deep. Captain M.R. Elles, R.E., went in to try and rescue him but got into difficulty and was drowned. Lieutenant D.A. Thomson went in to try and save Captain Elles but failed, Alam Khan being also drowned.

On the 6th October, 1907, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from a trawler S.W. of Rockhall, there being a heavy swell at the time. Chas.Tidbury at once jumped after him, but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 24th August, 1906, a man fell from a bridge which was being repaired at Burki Nulla, India, the river being in full flood. J.S. Trench plunged in to his help, but, owing to the strong current, failed to reach him and he was drowned.

Whyte, M.F.B., Lieutenant, H.M.S. Vengeance   Case 35605

On the 17th September, 1907, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from H.M.S. Vengeance, off Portland, the ship being under steam and going 10 knots at the time. Lieutenant M.F.B. Whyte jumped from the ship with a lifebuoy, but failed to reach the man before he sank, and was himself 20 minutes in the water before being picked up.

On the 27th December, 1906, J.R. Spong fell from the Pier into the Thames at Shadwell, there being a strong tide with a depth of 15 feet and freezing at the time. R. Wilders, who was on a Tug Boat, at once jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a police boat.

On the 4th February, 1907, Lady Wilson was skating on the canal at Tiverton and fell through the ice 7 to 8 yards from the side in 6 feet of water. Her daughter, Miss Nora K. Wilson, crawled up to the hole when the ice again broke, but she succeeded in supporting and taking her mother within reach of the bank where she was pulled out.

On the 29th August, 1907, a man, while assisting to coal the G.E.R. s.s. Chelmsford at Parkeston Quay, fell overboard, there being a depth of 20 feet with a strong flood tide. George Winks, A.B., at once jumped in fully clothed, and supported him till further help came and they were both got out.

Worfolk, A.J.   Case 35104

On the 28th November, 1906, Arthur Pound, while at work on the new riverwall at Hull missed his footing and fell into the river, there being a strong tide and the depth 16 to 18 feet. A.J. Worfolk plunged in fully clothed and kept him afloat till ropes were got and they were pulled out.

On the 8th February, 1906, a cart with four persons on it was swept away while crossing the Groenvlie Sluit, at Fauresmith, Orange River Colony. Harold P. Wright, Sub-Inspector S.A.C. and C.F. Atkinson went in and succeeded in saving two women and a child; the fourth person, a native, got out unaided.
