At 10 p.m. on the 29th October, 1910, a man named Chase, owing to the darkness, walked over the wharf into the sea at Castries, St. Lucia, W.I. Thos. St. Aime plunged in and got him back to the wharf, where they were pulled out.

Aitchison, Robt., jun. Case 38570

At 11.30 a.m. on the 15th August, 1911, Thos. Craig fell overboard from a fishing boat about 15 miles north of Berwick, and did not come to the surface. Robt. Aitchison, jun., at once sprang after him, and, diving, brought him to the surface, after which they were picked up.

At 6 a.m. on the 6th June, 1911, E. Guy, Petty Officer, H.M.S. Venus, was accidentally knocked overboard from a collier alongside the ship at Berehaven. Lieutenant J.B. Bateman plunged in and caught him, and they were got on board with a rope.

Beattie, James Case 38786

At 3.50 p.m. on the 25th October, 1911, a woman fell from the protection wall into the sea at Arbroath. James Beattie jumped in and with difficulty managed to get her out.

Bell, Richard M. Case 38180

At 4.15 p.m. on the 8th June, 1911, a passenger threw himself overboard from the s.s. Golden Eagle off the mouth of the Thames. Richard M. Bell plunged in from the vessel and caught him, but when picked up by a boat the man was dead.

Blatcher, E., Gunner, R.H.A. Case 38118

At 6.15 p.m. on the 12th March, 1911, a boy fell down a well at Meerut, India, the well being 26 feet deep with 10 feet of water in it. Gunner E. Blatcher, R.H.A., jumped down with a rope, which broke, and he then dived several times, but failed to find the boy, who was drowned.

At 12.30 p.m. on the 14th August, 1911, two boys were bathing from the causeway at Portsmouth, and were swept away by the tide. Alfred Branscombe swam out to their help, but was clutched, and got into danger. R.W.H. Robinson, aged 14, swam out and succeeded in saving both the boys, and Edward J. Regan went in and brought Branscombe to shore.

At 11 a.m. on the 21st July, 1911, J.C. Burton was bathing in the sea at Amanzimtoti, Natal, and got into difficulty. W. Brokensha went to his help but could not save him, and was himself washed ashore half an hour after.

Buchan, Arthur Case 38083

At 2.45 p.m. on the 19th April, 1911, two boys named McPherson were on the rocks at South Bay, Peterhead, watching the surf, when both were swept off, the elder being carried out some distance. Arthur Buchan and Geo. Buchan went in, Arthur saving the elder lad and George the younger.

At 11.15 p.m. on the 1st June, 1911, a boat belonging to H.M.S. Penguin with six men on board was capsized in Sydney Harbour, the night being dark and the water cold. Private C.A.Burrows, R.M.L.I., and W.H. Colmer, A.B., who were of the party, exerted themselves to help their comrades, and succeeded in saving three of them, the fourth being drowned.

At 10.40 p.m. on the 22nd October, 1911, a man fell into Harwich harbour in a dangerous position between the pier and a tug, the night being dark and the sea choppy. G.F. Congdon, Writer, H.M.S. Ganges, plunged in and held him till they were got out with ropes.

Thos. C. Hurn, police constable, and James J. Lawrence attempted to rescue W. Miller from the Usk at Newport, and S. Cullimore, police constable, succeeded in saving him, on the 21st June, 1911.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 8th August, 1911, a boy and girl while bathing in the sea at Llangenneth Sands were carried away by the tide. William David and J.W. Howard swam out and succeeded in saving both.

At 2 p.m. on the 2nd September, 1911, a woman was washed from the rocks into the sea at Portrush, and was carried out about 40 yards. Joseph Davis plunged in and succeeded in bringing her near the shore but could not land, when H. McAllister went in and assisted him and she was safely landed.

Dean, John Case 38782

At 10 p.m. on the 8th October, 1911, an old man fell into the lock connecting the Prince's and Queen's Dock at Hull, the depth being 18 feet and the night dark. John Dean plunged in and caught him, but when got out he did not recover.

Ditton, Thos., aged 13 Case 38007

At 5 p.m. on the 15th January, 1911, R. Webb fell through the ice on a brick-pond at Norbiton, the depth being 7 feet and the distance from the side 30 yards. Thos. Ditton, aged 13, went to his help, and, after being under water several times, managed to get Webb out and then got himself out.

At 1 a.m. on the 1st July, 1911, a stevedore fell into the dock at Montreal, the water being very foul. Patrick J. Doyle, First Officer R.M.S. Teutonic, plunged in from a height of 25 feet and rescued him.

At 6.20 a.m. on the 13th December, 1910, a boy belonging to the Training Ship Mercury wa sliding down a rope in order to reach the cutter, and fell into the Hamble at Southampton, it being dark at the time with half a gale blowing. A.M. Driver and F.W. Yateman, both aged 15, plunged in from the ship, but although Driver held him for some time they could not effect his rescue, and he was drowned.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 2nd December, 1910, a man named Wheatcroft, in trying to pass through the flood caused by an overflow of the Derwent at Derby, was swept away, but managed to grasp a fence about 200 yards from the water's edge. A. Edwards went in, and tying a rope round him, he was dragged to land.

At 3 p.m. on the 4th June, 1911, Geo. Fisher was bathing in an old quarry at Arlecdon and became entangled in the weeds in 9 feet of water. M.Fitzwilliams went in, and at great risk effected his rescue.

At 1.10 p.m. on the 14th August, 1911, a boy named Sweeney was bathing in the Usk at Newport when he was carried away by the tide. John Foley, aged 15, went in, but was clutched and also got in danger. John Sullivan then plunged in and brought them out one at a time.

At 5.20 p.m. on the 4th August, 1911, a child fell overboard from a pleasure steamer on the Bure, near Yarmouth. E.J. Fozzard, schoolmaster, at once jumped after him and succeeded in effecting the rescue.

At 12 noon on the 15th November, 1911, F. Lockwood fell from a barge into Shadwell Basin, the depth being 28 feet. Wm. L. Fuggle jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Galloway, Peter M. Case 38780

At 7.10 p.m. on the 10th October, 1911, a girl accidentally fell into the dock at Dundee, the depth being 16 feet and the night dark. Peter M. Galloway plunged in and succeeded in saving her.

At 6 a.m. on the 10th May, 1910, John Gowans was accidentally knocked overboard from a fishing boat about one mile off Peterhead, the sea being choppy at the time. James Gowans, Jun., went over with a line and caught him some 30 yards from the boat, and they were then pulled on board.

Bronze Clasp

On the afternoon of the 5th July, 1911, a boat was run down by a steamer in Swanage Bay, and one of the passengers, a woman, was in danger. Richard S. Grant, the boatman, swam to her help and kept her afloat till they were picked up.

At 11 p.m. on the 4th November, 1911, a man in trying to board a tug fell into the harbour at Whitby, striking his head and becoming unconscious. Edward Griffin plunged in and kept him afloat till a boat came and they were picked up.

Hale, W.H. Case 38548

At 4.45 p.m. on the 7th July, 1911, two lads, when bathing in the canal at Blacklake, near West Bromich, got into difficulty. Mr Whitehouse went to their help, but was dragged down and lost his own life. W.H. Hale then went in and rescued one lad, and then tried to save Whitehouse and the second boy, but failed.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 16th July, 1911, a small boat with two men on board was capsized near the pier at Southend, the tide being very strong at the time. F.C. Hammond plunged in from the pier, but failed to reach them in time, and they were both drowned.

At 7 p.m. on the 21st July, 1911, two boys while bathing in a brick-pond at Leatherhead got into difficulty. F. Hampton, aged 14, plunged in and succeeded in saving both.

Harden, Francis L., Surgeon, San Francisco Case 38026

At 4.30 p.m. on the 16th August, 1909, a man while mad with drink jumped overboard from a vessel some half a mile from shore in the harbour at Acapulco, there being a choppy sea and danger from sharks. Francis L. Harden, Surgeon, San Francisco, jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Hatton, Maurice Case 38416

At 3 p.m. on the 9th August, 1911, a boy, while bathing in the Stour at Cattawade, got out into deep water. Owen Brooks, aged 11, went to his help, but failed to save him. Maurice Hatton then swam out 100 yards and brought him in, but he did not recover.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 4th September, 1910, Sergeant Messam of the Calcutta Police, in trying to get into a boat, fell into the Hooghly, the current being strong and treacherous. Sergeant W.G.K. Haydon plunged in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat 10 minutes after.

At 6.50 a.m. on the 1st February, 1911, Wm. Harris, while carrying coal ashore from a vessel, fell into the harbour at Devonport, the depth being 15 feet and the weather frosty. Chas J. Hearn jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

At 8 a.m. on the 28th October, 1911, John Thomas fell overboard from the s.s. North Wales in the Weser at Bremen, the depth being 22 feet with a strong tide. Ralph Hedley plunged in after him, but failed to reach him before he sank.

At 6.30 p.m. on the 11th May, 1911, a boy accidentally fell into the Ouse at Goole, the depth being 10 to 12 feet with a very strong tide. Jack Hewitt, aged 10, plunged in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 21st October, 1911, John Akers fell into the dock at Grimsby in a dangerous position between the quay and a ship. Timothy Higgins, aged 14, plunged in and supported him till they were got out.

At 10.45 p.m. on the 23rd October, 1911, a woman threw herself into the dock at Hull, the depth being 22 feet. E. Hilliard, police constable, plunged in and caught her, and they were got out with ropes.

At 5 p.m. on the 28th February, 1911, a bandsman of the South Staffs. Regt. fell from a rock into the sea at Gibraltar, the depth being 12 feet and no means of landing. Gunner Geo. Hodgson, R.G.A., plunged in, but was unable to effect the rescue, and was himself got out with a lifebuoy.

At 10 a.m. on the 26th June, 1911, J.H. Howarth was thrown into the sea at Spithead owing to Torpedo-Boat 86 running down a cutter from H.M.S. Achilles. E. Hollingsworth, A.B. on the Achilles, plunged in and rescued him.

Hopkins, Frederick, Pierman, Westminster Pier Case 38446

At 3.05 p.m. on the 12th August, 1911, a man, In an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Thames at Westminster, the depth being 30 feet with a strong tide. Frederick Hopkins, Pierman at Westminster Pier, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

At 8.15 a.m. on the 2nd July, 1911, a man in a fit of insanity threw himself overboard from H.M.S. Tyne. R.B. Hosking, Fleet Paymaster, J. Lawrence, Leading Signalman, and W.F. Manaton, Sick Bay Steward, all jumped after him, and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

At 6.50 p.m. on the 27th June, 1911, Hugh Owen was bathing in the sea at Amlwch Port and sank in 12 to 14 feet of water. Jean Jaffres went in and, after diving, got him out , but he did not recover.

Jenkins, A.S. Case 38805

At 7 p.m. on the 29th October, 1911, a man belonging to H.M.S. Illustrious, in getting out a launch, fell into the sea at Weymouth. A.S. Jenkins jumped in to his help, but was too late, as the man had been got out, and he himself got into difficulty. E.W. Endicott went in with a rope and rescued him.

Jones, Albert, aged 13 Case 38619

At 6.30 p.m. on the 7th September, 1911, two lads while bathing in the Regent's Canal, Bethnal Green, were sucked out into deep water by a passing barge. Albert Jones, aged 13, plunged in and succeeded in saving both, and Frederick Knowles restored one of them who was unconscious.

On the 15th April, 1911, an aeroplane on which were two men collapsed and fell into the sea off Nice. Lieutenant T.C. Jones, Connaught Rangers, supported his companion, Jean Dufour, until they were picked up by a boat.

At 7 p.m. on the 16th July, 1910, a woman threw herself into the river Moa, Sierra Leone, there being a strong current running. Privates Morlai Kambia and Senneh Kamara, of the West African Frontier Force, plunged in, and between them landed her after being carried down 200 yards.

Kerley, Wm. Case 38053

At 5 a.m. on the 23rd March, 1911, a man named Thompson went down a manhole 20 feet deep at Cullybackey, co. Antrim, to look for an escape of gas, and was overcome by the fumes. Wm. Kerley went down with a rope, which he got round him, and he was drawn up in an unconscious state. Sergeant R. McMinis and Constable Thos. Hegarty, R.I.C., used artificial respiration and restored him.

At 11 a.m. on the 25th May, 1910, two women were bathing in the Indus at Rohi and were being carried out into deep water, the place being very dangerous. D. Kanmahomed, Police Constable, went in fully clothed, and was successful in saving both.

Khattri, J.S., Rifleman, 9th Gurkha Rifles Case 38150

At 4.15 p.m. on the 8th February, 1911, a man belonging to the 9th Gurkha Rifles in a fit of insanity threw himself into the Chitral River, which was full of snow water. Rifleman J.S. Khattri plunged in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

At 1.20 p.m. on the 5th July, 1911, a seaman fell overboard from H.M.S. Britannia off Kingstown. Geo. King, A.B., and J.E. Higgins, Signalman, H.M.S. Dominion, jumped in after him, but failed to reach him before he sank.

Lane, F.E., Customs Officer Case 38612

At 8.50 a.m. on the 15th August, 1911, a native boy who could not swim fell into the harbour at Swatow, China. None of the Chinese present would try to save him. F.E. Lane, Customs Officer, plunged in fully clothed and rescued him.

Lanyon, John Case 37977

On the 22nd December, 1910, a boat with eight men on board was capsized by a steamboat at Devonport, one of the men being jammed under the boat. John Lanyon dived under the boat and brought him to the surface, when they were picked up.

At 11 a.m. on the 7th May, 1911, a seaman belonging to the s.s. Glenfinlas was bathing at Akyab, Burma, and got into difficulty, the depth being 40 feet. Cyril W. Last, Second Officer, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

Between 5 and 6 p.m. on the 27th June, 1911, a woman fell from a cliff a height of some 40 feet into the sea at Alderney. William Le Cocq went in and succeeded in bringing her to shore.

Lewis, Edward, Police Constable Case 37964

At 9.30 p.m. on the 15th December, 1910, an old man in trying to go on board his vessel fell into the harbour at Bridgewater, Somerset, the depth being 7 feet. Edward Lewis, Police Constable, plunged in, and was successful in saving him.

Lipscombe, Chas. Case 38031

At 1.30 p.m. on the 22nd February, 1911, a seaman, who had got on to a buoy for the pupose of mooring a vessel got into difficulty. Lieutenant H.F. Alderton, R.N., went to his help, but both were washed from the buoy. Chas. Lipscombe, Stoker, jumped in to help Lieutenant Alderton, but failed to reach him before he sank. The seaman was afterwards picked up.

At 3.45 p.m. on the 9th April, 1911, a man named Gannan fell from a boat into the dock lock at Port Talbot, the depth being 37 feet and the water rushing into the lock. Wm. Jas. Lloyd plunged in and was successful in saving him.

Lyons Sampson Case 38828

At 2.50 p.m. on the 7th November, 1911, a boy fell into a lodge at Nelson and was carried out 40 feet into a depth of 10 to 15 feet. Sampson Lyons plunged in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

At 5 p.m. on the 25th March, 1911, Private Fells, of the 17th Lancers, was bathing in the river near Sialkot, India, and got into difficulty in 18 feet of water. Private W.H. Makin plunged in and effected his rescue.

At 11 a.m. on the 28th March, 1911, a steam launch sank in the Niger at Lkoja, and Jikko, the engine-driver, was in danger of drowning. E. Manuel, a fireman, plunged in and was successful in saving him.

At 5 p.m. on the 20th March, 1911, Jas Stevens accidentally fell from a boat in the harbour at St. Helena. R.C. Marsh, Boatswain's Mate on the cable ship Britannia, who had his right hand bandaged, jumped inn and succeeded in saving him.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 13th January, 1911, Private E. Taylor, R.M.L.I., accidentally fell into Dover harbour, the depth being 31 feet, the tide strong, and the weather very cold. E.E. Marston, A.B., H.M.S. Black Prince, plunged in fully clothed and rescued him.

May, John R.B. Case 37969

At 9.15 p.m. on the 28th December, 1910, a youth, named Stedman, fell from the pier into the sea at Southwold, the night being dark and the depth 15 feet. John R.B. May climbed down the pier and, jumping in, held him up until a rope was got and they were drawn up.

McClelland, J. Case 38808

At 11.30 a.m. on the 2nd November, 1911, A. McKay was in a boat which was capsized about 50 yards from shore at Ballintoy, co. Antrim, the sea being rough. J. McClleland swam out and succeeded in saving him.

McEwan, Patrick C., Natal Police Case 37968

On the morning of the 25th August, 1910, a boat with four men and a boy on board was capsized 150 yards from the side on Lake Sabayi, Northern Zululand. Two men were drowned in trying to reach land, the water being very cold. Patrick C. McEwan, Natal Police, left the fourth man and a boy clinging to the boat, and swimming ashore made a rough raft, and paddling out rescued them one at a time.

McIntosh, R.H. Case 38469

At 4.30 p.m. on the 13th August, 1911, a woman fell into the Thames at Charing Cross, the depth at the time being 18 feet. R.H. McIntosh jumped in and, diving, got her up, and she was taken into a boat and landed at the pier, where T.J. Mabey restored her.

At 12.55 on the 26th June, 1911, two lads when wading in the Tay at Perth were carried away by the current into a deep pool. D. McLauchlan plunged in and succeeded in bringing both out.

Mellon, Percy H. Case 38020

At 9.45 p.m. on the 24th February, 1911, a woman accidentally fell into the Thames at Iffley, and was carried down some 40 yards, the depth being 10 feet and the night dark. Percy H. Mellon nd H.A. Mellon both went in and, guided by a lantern held on the bank, succeeded in saving her.

Middleton, James Case 38774

At 6.30 a.m. on the 27th September, 1911, Joseph Taylor accidentally fell overboard from a fishing boat outside Scarborough harbour, the sea being choppy. James Middleton jumped after him and kept him afloat till they were got on board half an hour after.

Milligan, H.W., Civil Servant Case 38454

At 12.30 a.m. on the 19th April, 1911, a fishing boat with two men on board was capsized off Negombo, Ceylon, the night being dark and the water cold. After clinging to the boat for five hours their cries were heard, and H.W. Milligan, civil servant swam out and was successful in savig them.

At 10 a.m. on the 8th February, 1911, Hy. Parrish went into an ale-vat for the purpose of cleaning it at the brewery, Romford, and was struck down by foul gas. Wm. Moir went to his help, but was also struck down, and was drawn out. J.M. Hawkins then went in and got a rope round him, but when got out he did not recover.

At 9 a.m. on the 29th May, 1910, a man was riding a horse which got into a quicksand and backed out into the Ganges at Bijnor, India. Jas. C. Moore, Civil Servant, plunged in and swam with him to the side.

At 6 p.m. on the 5th September, 1910, a canoe, in crossing a swollen river at Nabugo Gold Coast (sic), was capsized and a native carrier was carried away, the depth being from 10 to 20 feet and infested with alligators. Awudu Moshi went in and caught him but was unable to bring him in. Major A.H. Festing, D.S.O., Royal Irish Rifles, then went in and brought both to land.

Naseb, Yacoob Case 38300

At 8 a.m. on the 5th March, 1911, two men belonging to the York and Lancaster Regiment were in a small boat which capsized in 15 feet of water at Karachi, India. Yacoob Naseb at once jumped in and managed to save both men.

At 7 p.m. on the 24th November, 1910, a man was seized with a fit and fell from the quay into the dock at Southampton, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark and cold. James A. Osborne, Customs Officer, plunged in and caught him, and they were got out after being 20 minutes in the water.

At 1.30 a.m. on the 11th June, 1911, a man named Gartside fell into Holyhead harbour between the s.s. Hibernia and the quay. Lewis Owen plunged in and, having caught him, brought him to the surface, and they were then helped out.

At 9 a.m. on the 22nd September, 1911, a girl was swept from the wall into the harbour at Karachi by a high swell. Pascool plunged in and succeeded in swimming with her to the landing steps.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 24th June, 1911, W. Brown while crossing the Whiladder at Cranshaws, was carried away, the river being in flood. Robt. Paterson plunged in and succeeded in rescuing him.

At 4.15 p.m. on the 30th May, 1911, two youths while bathing in the Tyne at Scotswood got into difficulty and went under in 12 feet of water. Thos. Paxton plunged in and, after diving, succeeded in saving both.

At 10.30 a.m. on the 26th August, 1911, a youth named Green fell into the Humber at Hull, and was carried out some 20 yards by the tide. John H. Peak and J.H. Quilligan went in and attempted to rescue him, but failed.

At 11.20 a.m. on the 22nd December, 1910, a boy fell overboard from the Training Ship Cornwall into the Thames at Purfleet, there being a dense fog at the time and the depth 24 feet. Geo. Peck jumped from the ship and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

Philips, Robt. Case 38025

At 9 p.m. on the 18th February, 1911, a man named Curry with a child in his arms walked over the landing into the Tyne at Hebburn, there being a very strong current running at the time. Robt. Philips plunged in from the ferry-boat, and twice caught the child, but could not hold it, and both father and child were drowned.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 4th November, 1911, S.E. Bryant was washed from the rocks into the sea at Porthcurnow. M.O. Pibworth plunged in to try and rescue him, but failed.

On the 30th June, 1911, three men were struck down by gas in the provision hold of H.M.S. Superb at Portland. Commandert A.D.P.R. Pound, M. O'Halloran, and George Bartlett went down and got straps round the men, and they were pulled up, but none of them recovered.

At noon on the 16th March, 1910, a man jumped from a steamer outside the harbour at Colombo, the depth being 40 feet and danger from sharks. Wm. Pritchard, Leading Diver, plunged in from a launch and caught him, and they were got on board with ropes.

At midnight on the 2nd November, 1911, a man named Beagles was thrown into the Thames at Tilbury owing to his boat being run down and smashed. A.E.J. Pusey plunged in from a tug and supported him till they were picked up.

At 9 p.m. on the 1st April, 1910, a young man and, young woman accidentally walked into the canal at Beeston, the night being very dark. Frederick Reavill went in and saved the man, again going in, he tried to find the woman, but failed, and she was drowned.

At 11 a.m. on the 30th December, 1910, a woman threw herself into the Nene at Wisbech, the river being in flood, 10 to 15 feet deep, with a dangerous current. R.W.R. Reeve plunged in and caught her, but after being carried down 300 yards, lost his hold and she wsa drowned.

At 12 noon on the 29th July, 1911, a man belonging to the 2nd Bttn. Lancashire Fusiliers, while bathing in the Taff near Cardiff, got into difficulty in a pool 35 feet deep. Captain H.B. Roffey, who had got two other men out, plunged in and rescued him.

At 1.35 a.m. on the 5th September, 1911, a woman either fell or threw herself into the Thames at the Victoria Embankment. Joseph Root, Police Constable, jumped in and caught her, and they were picked up by a boat.

At 1 p.m. on the 8th July, 1911, P.H. Spicer, while bathing in the Thames at Battersea, became exhausted in 18 feet of water 30 yards out. A. Shepperson, aged 13, swam out and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Ship, Frank, Third Officer, s.s. Tymeric Case 38099

At 7.30 a.m. on the 4th September, 1910, a boat which was being used in getting out an anchor from the s.s. Tymeric, which was stranded off the coast of Queensland, was upset, the sea being choppy and infested with sharks. Frank Ship, the Third Officer, got hold of a man and kept him afloat till they were picked up 300 yards from the ship.

About 6 p.m. on the 23rd August, 1911, three men belonging to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry were bathing in the sea at Minehead and got into difficulty 100 yards from shore. John Slade, an old man of 72, swam out to try and rescue them, but became exhausted. Private J.T. Spry, of the same Regiment, who had also gone out to their help, brought Slade to shore, the three men being drowned.

At 11 a.m. on the 13th January, 1911, a boat with three men on board struck a rock outside the harbour at Bressay, throwing all the men into the sea. James Stephen, being the only one who could swim, attempted to save his companions, but failed.

At 11.30 a.m. on the 25th July, 1911, two boys while at play accidentally fell into the dock at Hull. Hy. Stephenson, aged 12, plunged in and rescued them one at a time.

On the 24th July, 1911, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Lagan at Belfast. Jas. Stevenson jumped from the bridge, a height of 30 feet, into the river, and kept her afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

At 2 p.m. on the 28th February, 1911, a boy named Orr fell into the Tees at Blackwell, near Darlington, the river being in flood and 10 feet deep. A.E. Swainston went in and twice caught him, but could not retain his hold, and the boy was drowned.

At 2.45 p.m. on the 1st August, 1911, a man fell overboard from a steamer near the centre of the harbour at Portsmouth. Pte. A. Thompson, R.M.L.I., jumped from another vessel and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

At 7 p.m. on th 27th June, 1911, a girl accidentally fell into the Ouse at Goole, the depth being 12 to 13 feet. H. Thompson, aged 15, plunged in. and, after diving, succeeded in saving her.

At 3.20 p.m. on the 31st December, 1910, the Rev. C. Laisy accidentally fell into the reiver at New York, there being a strong tide and the river full of drift ice. Edward Tilbury jumped in, and after much difficulty succeeded in saving him.

At 4.45 p.m. on the 6th July, 1911, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from H.M.S. Roxburgh at sea. R.T. Travers, Petty Officer, and R.H. Jones, A.B., both went after him, and supported him for some time, but, becoming exhausted, had to let go and he was drowned.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 6th September, 1911, Geo. Newton went down a manhole to inspect a valve on the sewage main at Wollaston, Stourbridge, and was overcome by foul gas. Frederick Turner, Engine Driver, went down and got a rope round him, and he was pulled up.

At 4.p.m. on the 8th July, 1911, a boy while fishing fell into a pool at Christchurch, the depth being 25 feet. A.F. Warn plunged in, and dived repeatedly, but failed to find him.

At 4 p.m. on the 9th August, 1911, A.E. Barrow, who had assisted in saving a man from the sea at Mablethorpe, was himself washed away, but managed to hold on to a wooden culvert over which the sea was breaking. T.C. Waterland attempted to rescue him, but failed, and G.H. Fowler then went in and at great risk succeeded in bringing him to land.

At 9 p.m. on the 11th July, 1911, a man accidentally fell overboard from a launch on the Nile near Wadelai, the current being very strong and crocodiles present. Lieutenant W.T. Webb-Bowen, Middlesex Regiment, plunged in and rescued him in an exhausted state.

At 2.30 p.m. on the 29th July, 1911, a child fell into the mill pit, at Sandy. Florence Weeden, aged 13, plunged in and effected the rescue

At 6.30 p.m. on the 4th July, 1911, a boy fell into the Tyne at South Shields, the depth being 36 feet. Geo. W. Whale, aged 11, plunged in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

At 11 p.m. on the 23rd December, 1910, a man, in attempting to go on board his vessel, fell into the dock at Newport, the depth being 28 feet and the night very cold. C.R. Whitcombe, Police Constable, plunged in and supported him for ten minutes, when they were got out with a lifebuoy.

At 1.30 p.m. on the 5th June, 1911, three lads while bathing in the Severn at Slymbridge got into difficulty in 10 feet of water. Thomas W. White went in and succeeded in saving two of them, the third being drowned.

At 3 p.m. on the 29th July, 1911, a man got into difficulty in 8 feet of water in the baths at Merthyr Tydfil. Jas. A. Wilson, Chief Constable, plunged in, but was clutched, and was only got out in an unconscios state, the man being drowned.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 28th July, 1911, three men were bathing in the sea at Barry, and got into danger 30 yards out in 20 feet of water. Charles Woolley jumped in and succeeded in saving two of them, the third being drowned.

At 1.40 p.m. on the 7th June, 1911, a lad while bathing in the Thames at Woolwich was carried out 20 yards and sank in deep water. Chas. Young swam out and, diving, found him and brought him to land.

On the 21st August, 1910, a boat, with two men and a woman on board, was capsized on the Belize River, British Honduras. Uriah Young plunged in from a launch and succeeded in saving all three after diving for the woman.
