Alderson, Wm.   Case 40537

At 3.30 p.m. on the 20th November, 1913, a lad named Haddow, in trying to recover a football from the Aden at Appleby, fell in and was swept away, the river being in flood. Wm. Alderson plunged in and caught him, but after being carried 50 yards further down had to let go and save himself, Haddow being drowned.

On the 23rd February, 1912, two men were on a raft which capsized on the river Dilli, Upper Assam, the depth being 15 feet and very cold. Abad Ali, of the Survey Department, went to their help and rescued them one at a time.

On the afternoon of the 19th April, 1913, a man fell overboard from a boat in Durban Bay, which is infestd with sharks. Chief Petty Officer G. Ambler, of the Natal Naval Corps, jumped in and supported him till they were picked up.

At 10.50 a.m. on the 24th December, 1912, a woman threw herself into the Thames at London Bridge, the depth at the time being 11 feet and the place very dangerous. Robt. Armstrong, constable, City Police, plunged in and succeeded in saving her.

Between 10 and 11 p.m. on the 25th December, 1912, a woman threw herself into the Granville Dock at Dover. Harry Barber, P.O., H.M.S., Minerva, plunged in and supported her till a boat picked them up.

At 2.45 p.m. on the 12th August, 1913, a man named Nicholson, while at work inside a gasholder at Leeds, was overcome and became unconscious. At 11 a.m. on the 12th November, 1913, two men in the course of their employment went down a manhole into a sewer at Leeds, and were overcome by foul gas. Harry Baxter, Isaac Worfolk, W. Carswell, Walter Turner, Police Inspector A. E. Waterhouse, R. Scurrah, P.C., W.B. Plummer, P.C., and W. Brindley, P.C., all went down and eventually got the men out, but they did not recover.

At 2.10 a.m. on the 14th December, 1912, a woman threw herself into the Thames at Charing Cross, there being a depth of 10 feet with a strong tide. Thomas H. Bean plunged in and supported her till they were picked up by a boat.

At 10 a.m. on the 23rd July, 1913, F. Noble, while bathing in the sea at Aberdovey, got into difficulty 60 yards from shore in deep water. Richd. R.G. Bell swam out from shore and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

At 1 p.m. on the 25th June, 1913, a girl while paddling in the Irrawaddy at Mankin, Burma, was swept out into 40 feet of water. John Bennie went in and at great risk succeeded in bringing her out.

At 3 p.m. on the 8th October, 1913, a child while at play on the pier fell into the harbour at Wei-hai-Wei, China. Cecil J. Bickle, aged 9, went in and kept him afloat till they were pulled out.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 30th June, 1913, a boy while bathing in the lake at North Minns, Herts., got into difficulty in 6 to 7 feet of water. Margaret Binnion went in and was successful in saving him.

At 10.10 a.m. on the 6th May, 1913, a man threw himself overboard from the R.M.S. Majestic in the Atlantic. David Blair, first officer and Lieutenant R.N.R., went after him, but a boat which had been got out reached the man first.

At 5 p.m. on the 7th July, 1913, Richd. Purdy fell into Eyemouth Harbour, the depth being 12 feet. Alexander Borthwick, who cannot swim, jumped in and held him till they were pulled out.

At 5 p.m. on the 18th July, 1913, a seaman fell overboard from the picket boat into 20 feet of water at Grimsby. Major F.R. Boyle, R.M.L.I., jumped in and with a lifebuoy kept him afloat till they were got on board the boat.

At 6.45 p.m. on the 2nd June, 1913, Robert Moon fell from a bridge into the Taff at Cardiff, the depth being 12 feet. Geo. Brinkworth jumped in from a yacht and swam with him to a mud-bank in mid-river whence they were taken by a boat.

At 3 p.m. on the 8th January, 1913, two ladies who were unable to swim got out into deep water while bathing in the sea at Barbados, W.I. Alfred L. Browne swam out and brought them to shore one at a time.

At 12.30 a.m. on the 27th April, 1913, a woman, in attempting suicide, threw herself into the Lea at Bromley, there being a depth of 9 feet. F.J. Cade, P.C., went in but failed to save her, and A.F. Eade then went in and got her out.

At 1 p.m. on the 19th August, 1913, A. McLaren, an old man of 64, in attempting suicide, threw himself from the Albert Bridge into the Clyde at Glasgow, the depth being 12 to 30 feet. J.W.S. Campbell, police constable, swam out from the side, and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

At 1.15 p.m. on the 11th January, 1913, a man fell from the boom ladder of H.M.S. Achilles into the sea at Spithead. Lieutenant A.F.B. Carpenter, Herbert F. Bundy, A.B., and E. Hollingsworth, A.B., went in and between them, managed to save the man.

At 8 p.m. on the 2nd November, 1913, Richard Cobley accidentally fell into the harbour at St. John's, Antigua, W.I., and sank in a depth of 10 feet. J.H. Carter, artificer engineer, H.M.S. Suffolk, dived in where the bubbles were rising and rescued him.

At 8.20 p.m. on the 2nd October, 1913, a man in attempting to swim ashore from a boat, got into difficulty in Achill Sound, co. Mayo, the night being very dark. Hugh Carty, constable R.I.C., went in and caught him, and they were then towed ashore by a boat.

At 10 p.m. on the 30th September, 1913, a boy fell from the Trinity road quay into the harbour at Weymouth, the water being deep and the night dark. Lieutenant Eric H. Chapman, 107th Pioneers, Indian Army, plunged in and succeeded in bringing him out.

At 9.20 a.m. on the 14th October, 1913, a woman, in attempting suicide, threw herself into the Tyne at Wallsend, the depth being 20 feet and the water foul. Councillor H.W. Clothier plunged in, and after a hard struggle succeeded in bringing her out.

At 4.45 p.m. on the 2nd October, 1913, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the harbour at Leith, the depth being 9 feet and the water foul. Alexander Dawson, P.C., plunged in and swam with her 20 yards to the landing.

At 10.15 p.m. on the 7th September, 1912, a man, in trying to board his ship from a boat, fell into the harbour at Hong Kong, the night being dark and a strong tide running. Patrick Delaney, A.B., H.M.S. Newcastle, plunged in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat

At 4 p.m. on the 13th August, 1912, a girl threw herself from a boat into the Banjar river, India, there being a depth of 10 feet and the river in flood. Bora Dhimar plunged in and caught her, both being picked up by a boat 50 yards lower down the river.

At 9.30 p.m. on the 21st December, 1912, Francis Hill fell overboard from H.M.S. Colossus in Devonport harbour, the depth being 43 feet with a strong tide. P.J. Donovan, Leading Seaman, plunged in and caught him, but could not retain his hold, and Hill was drowned.

At 4.7 p.m. on the 5th September, 1913, the whaler belonging to H.M.S. Syren was run down by a steamer off Granton Harbour, and one of the men, named Field, got into difficulty. W. Dorman left the upturned boat, and swimming to Field kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 3rd November, 1912, A. McConnell was in a boat which capsized at Taveuni, Fiji, but managed to reach a rock some 50 yards from shore. James Douglas swam out and succeeded in taking him to land.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 20th August, 1913, a girl fell into the harbour at Whitby and was carried out some distance, the depth being 10 feet. John R. Dryden plunged in and succeeded in bringing her to the side.

At 5.30 a.m. on the 6th Junuary, 1913, a man was thrown into the harbour at Trinidad by the capsizing of a lighter. Catherine E. Durant, who was also on board, caught him and swam with him to another lighter where he was pulled on board.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 21st August, 1913, a man named Murphy was bathing in the sea at Bundoran and got into difficulty 150 yards from shore. Eric Eadie swam out, and after a 15 minutes' struggle got him to shore.

At 6 p.m. on the 24th December, 1912, three girls accidentally fell into the floating harbour at Bristol, the depth being 12 feet and the water 10 feet below the quay level. Theodore Enwright slid down a rope, and with the greatest difficulty rescued them.

At 6.45 p.m. on the 27th December, 1912, a man named Poole was thrown into the Medway at Sheerness owing to his boat being swamped. W. Eversfield, acting E.R.A., and Thomas Connolly, P.O., both of H.M.S. Intrepid, plunged in, but failed to reach him before he sank.

At 6 p.m. on the 25th February, 1913, a boy fell into the harbour at Wick, the depth being 8 to 10 feet and the water 17 feet below the quay level. John Farmer plunged in fully clothed and rescued him.

At 10.30 a.m. on the 28th November, 1912, Private R.C. Bailey, Hampshire Regiment, was bathing in the sea at Mauritius, and was swept over the reef by the heavy surf. Private Henry Ferre swam out to his help, and at great risk attempted to save him, but failed, and he was drowned.

At 6 p.m. on the 25th October, 1913, a man in some way fell into the Lake of Geneva at Territt, the depth being 30 to 40 feet and the water very cold. J.E. Findlay-Hamilton, student, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

At 9.45 p.m. on the 30th January, 1913, an old man, while waiting for the steamer, fell into the Liffey at Dublin, the water being cold and very foul. A. Finlayson and P. Murray both went in, and together succeeded in saving him.

At 3 p.m. on the 4th March, 1913, a man was washed overboard from a trawler in Broad Bay, Hebrides, the sea being very rough. Alexander Flett went after him with a line but failed to save him, and he was drowned.

At 1.30 p.m. on the 4th September, 1913, Miss F.M. Vaughan was bathing in the sea at Kingstown and got into difficulty in 12 feet of water. Kathleen Flynn, aged 15, schoolgirl, plunged in fully clothed and succeeded in saving her.

At 4 p.m. on the 19th September, 1912, a man belonging to the Royal Munster Fusiliers, who was under observation for insanity, broke away and threw himself into the sea at Port Blair, Andaman Islands. Privates J. Gallagher and M. Moynihan swam out and succeeded in bringing him to shore.

At 4.30 p.m. on the 30th May, 1913, a man in a fit of insanity threw himself into the Clyde at Glasgow. James Gibbons jumped in from the Albert Bridge, a height of 35 feet, and with much difficulty was successful in saving him.

At 11.30 p.m. on the 14th January, 1913, R. Austin, when going on board his barge, fell into the Ouse at Lewes. Edwin Glanfield plunged in but failed to find him and he was drowned.

At 7.15 p.m. on the 19th June, 1913, Thomas Reader fell into the Thames at Ratcliff Stairs, the depth being 12 feet with an ebb tide. Jas. Glendening went in and succeeded in saving him .

At 4.30 p.m. on the 24th May, 1913, F. Brooker fell into the Medway at Rochester, the depth being 7 to 8 feet. Albert Gold, aged 13, plunged in fully clothed and swam with him to the pier where he was got out.

At 8 p.m. on the 4th December, 1912, a man accidentally fell into the canal at Galway, the depth being 12 feet and the canal walled 15 feet above the water. Sergeant John Golden, Royal Irish Constabulary, plunged in and swam with him to a small island, whence they were rescued by a rope.

At 5.16 p.m. on the 27th August, 1913, a man named Holmes was killed in a well at Newton Valence by the explosion of a podwer charge, the shaft being filled with fumes. In the hope of being able to give some help H. Gostelow went down, but the man was then dead.

At 7.10 p.m. on the 8th October, 1913, a man in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the river at Exeter, the depth being 9 feet and the night dark. H. Guppy and F.W. Youlden, postmen, both went in and between them saved the man.

At 1 p.m. on the 10th September, 1913, a lad in trying to jump ashore from a ferry steamer, fell into the Tyne at Hebburn in a very dangerous position between the boat and the landing stage. Arnold Hadaway jumped in and succeeded in saving the boy, but was himself badly crushed and had one leg broken.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 28th August, 1913, an old man of 65 threw himself into the canal lock at Upper Mill, Yorks., the depth being 10 feet and the water foul. Lance- Corpl W. Hall, 7th Battalion West Riding Regiment, jumped in and caught him but failed to get him out, and he was drowned.

At 11.20 a.m. on the 23rd November, 1912, a boy fell into the harbour at Bermuda in a dangerous position between a vessel and the quay. Herbert Hans, a pilot, plunged in and caught him, and they were got out with a rope.

At 3 p.m. on the 6th October, 1913, Arthur Boffey, who was fishing near No Mans' Fort, Portsmouth, accidentally fell into the sea and was being carried away by the strong tide. Alfred Harris and J. Seymour, gunners, R.G.A., went in, and between them supported him till they were picked up.by a boat.

At 6 a.m. on the 24th December, 1912, a man, in trying to jump from the steamer, fell in the harbour at Rosslare, there being a depth of 26 feet with a rough sea. Patrick Hayes plunged in and caught him, but when got out he did not recover.

At 3 p.m. on the 20th June, 1913, a man, while painting the side of H.M.S. Bulwark, fell into the sea at Stokes Bay. Ernest Hearfield, A.B., plunged in fully clothed, and supported him till they were picked up.

At 3 p.m. on the 12th October, 1913, a child fell from the lock gates into the canal at Rochdale, the depth being 12 feet and no means of getting out. Geo. W. Heys, P.C., plunged in and supported him till further help came and they were got out.

At 6 p.m. on the 29th August, 1913, an A.B. named Barnes, fell overboard from H.M.S. Dwarf at Calabar, Southern Nigeria. Frederick C. Hoare, A.B., at once dived after him and caught him, but could not retain his hold and he was drowned.

On the afternoon of the 1st October, 1912, two men were swept away while bathing in the Nile at Mongalla. Mohammed Ibrahim, 12th Sudn. Bttn., Egyptian Army, plunged in and, after a hard struggle, saved one of the men.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 27th May, 1913, William Prior was overcome by foul gas 40 feet below the surface in a well at Birmingham. H. Jackson and C. Drakeley went down but failed to save him, and A. Partridge then went down and was successful in saving him.

Jefferson, Thos.   Case 40186

At 2.40 p.m. on the 3rd August, 1913, two youths got into difficulty while bathing in the Wear at Washington, the depth being 10 to 12 feet. Charles E. Devine went to their help, but was clutched and lost his life. Thos. Jefferson then went in and succeeded in saving both.

At 4.38 p.m. on the 14th April, 1913, a man fell overboard from H.M.S. London off Margate. Jas. Joyce, Ship's Corporal, plunged in after him, but, although he caught him twice, failed to save him.

At 5 p.m. on the 26th July, 1912, a man and woman in trying to cross a submerged bridge over the Nala at Garmajor were swept off into 12 feet of water. Badal Khan, P.C., plunged in and succeeded in saving both.

At 7.30 a.m. on the 19th November, 1912, a man was thrown into the Jumna Canal at Jagadhari by the capsizing of a raft, the depth being 30 feet with a strong current running. Ressaidar M.A. Khan, 9th Hodson's Horse, swam out 50 yards, freed him from the raft and held him till they were picked up.

King, Walter, aged 15   Case 40270

At 7 p.m. on the 18th August, 1913, a boat with six children on board was capsized in a creek at Warsash, Southampton. Walter King, aged 15, who was one of the number, was successful in landing three of them; the other two got out unaided.

On the 24th April, 1913, a man in trying to push off a launch fell into the Niger, Southern Nigeria, the current being strong and crocodiles present. Gunner Ali Kukawa, Southern Nigerian Regiment, went in and held him till a boat reached them.

Lamb, L. Mortimer First Mate, s.s. Darce Castle

At 1.30 p.m. on the 15th October, 1912, some workmen were overcome by foul gas in the hold of the s.s. Darce Castle at Keelung, Japan. L. Mortimer Lamb, first mate, went down and got a rope round one man, when he was overcome, both being afterwards got out, but the man died forty-eight hours later.

At 6.20 p.m. on the 11th June, 1913, a boy named Dennis fell into the Thames at the College steps, Chelsea, there being a depth of 10 feet with a strong flood tide. Jas. A. Lawrence jumped in and held him till they were picked up by a boat.

At 4.40 p.m. on the 30th May, 1913, an old woman of 61 fell into the Thames at Temple Stairs, there being a depth of 12 feet with a flowing tide. Thomas J. Leek plunged in and succeeded in bringing her back to the steps

Levine, David, aged 10   Case 40044

At 7.15 p.m. on the 19th June, 1913, H. Murrell fell into the Regent's Canal, Bethnal Green, the canal being 40 feet wide and 6 feet deep. David Levine, aged 10, went in from the opposite side, swam across, and rescued him.

At 1 p.m. on the 23rd December, 1912, Chas. Turrell fell into the Trawl Dock at Lowestoft, the depth being 15 to 16 feet. Jack Lowe, fisherman, jumped in fully clothed and was successful in saving him.

At 11.50 p.m. on the 24th September, 1913, a man named Forsyth fell into the basin near the entrance to the lock at Grangemouth. Angus Mackenzie plunged in, but failed to find him and he was drowned.

Mardon, F.S.C., A.B., H.M.S. Agamemnon   Case 39808

At 8.40 p.m. on the 15th March, 1913, a man fell from the lower boom of H.M.S. Agememnon into the sea at Berehaven, the sea being rough at the time. F.S.C. Mardon, A.B., plunged in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat, but he did not recover.

McLeod, Donald, Police Constable   Case 40548

At 11.50 p.m. on the 29th November, 1913, John Laird, an old man of 70, accidentally fell into the Queen's Dock, Glasgow, the night being dark and the depth 25 feet. Donald McLeod, police constable, plunged in and caught him, but when got into a boat he did not recover.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 24th March, 1913, a boy fell into the Trent at Nottingham, there being a depth of 18 feet. W.H. Lowe went in, but failed to save him, and Thomas Meakin then went in and got him out in an unconscious state.

At 8.15 a.m. on the 13th May, 1913, a man named Slack was overcome by the fumes from damaged grain in the hold of a vessel in Liverpool Docks. William Mealor went to his help but was also struck down. C.P. Metcalf and J.W. Gerrard then went down and were successful in saving Mealor, but Slack was dead when got out.

At 5 p.m. on the 19th November, 1912, a boat with a large number of persons on board was capsized on the Hooghly at Sibpen Ghat, India. W.A. Milner, B.K. Gupta, P.K. Ghosh, S.K. Haldar, A.R. Barua, R.R. Barua, and P. Ghosh all went in and exerted themselves in saving or attempting to save life.

On the afternoon of the 11th October, 1913, a man got into difficulty while bathing in the canal at Panama, Captain W.H. Morgan, s.s. Ecuador, jumped from the bridge, a height of 40 feet, and rescued him.

At 3 p.m. on the 26th August, 1913, two boys were bathing in a ballast pit at Edmonton and got out into deep water. Charles Morris, aged 12, went in and got one of them out, and then, with H. St. John Ellis, attempted to save the other but failed.

At 9.30 p.m. on the 14th July, 1913, a woman, in attempting suicide, threw herself into the canal at Birmingham. James Mountney, aged 14, went in and with difficulty succeeded in saving her.

At 2.40 p.m. on the 12th July, 1913, a boat was capsized in the Bosphorus at Constantinople 400 yards from shore and the current strong. Major V.A. Nye, Cheshire Regiment, jumped from a passing steamer and kept a woman afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

At 7.15 p.m. on the 21st July, 1913, a boy named Reed fell into the Thames at Wapping, there being a strong tide at the time. Michael O'Brien, aged 11, jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

At 6 p.m. on the 21st April, 1913, a boy fell into the river at Cork and was carried out 10 yards into 7 feet of water. John C. O'Flynn plunged in fully clothed and rescued him.

At midnight on the 22nd May, 1913, a man accidentally fell into the harbour at Galvaston, U.S.A. Captain James O'Neill, s.s. Bloomfield, jumped in and supported him for ten minutes, when they were got out with a rope.

At 12.30 p.m. on the 5th July, 1913, a child fell into the Thames at the Bell Wharf stairs, Shadwell, the depth being 8 feet with a strong tide. W.J. Penfold jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

At 10.55 a.m. on the 9th August, 1913, a man in attempting suicide threw himself overboard from the s.s. Paddington in the English Channel. Although the steamer was going 10 knots at the time, Gwilym Phillips, an apprentice, went after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

At 2.30 p.m.on the 7th November, 1913, a youth while painting the outside of H.M.S. Theseus, fell into the harbour at Queenstown, the depth being 10 fathoms with a strong flood tide. Horace Payne jumped in but could not hold him, and J.H. Quick then went in and held him till a boat picked them up.

On the morning of the 4th July, 1912, a man, while bathing in a pond at Myilkyina, Burma, got into an old well in the centre over 7 feet deep. Havildar Jerong-Kanche Rai, Burma Military Police, went in and got him out, but he did not recover.

At 1 p.m. on the 26th October, 1913, a man, in attempting suicide, threw himself into the Regent's Canal, Haggerston, and sank. After a man had tried to find him without success, Thomas Ribbans, aged 14, went in and got him out, and he recovered.

At 11.30 a.m. on the 25th April, 1913, Lieutenant F.A.L. Smith accidentally fell overboard from H.M.S. Vanguard off Pladda Arran. Lieutenant H.H. Rogers plunged in and caught him, but he did not recover after being got on board.

At 11 a.m. on the 8th July, 1913, J. Sullivan jumped overboard from H.M.S. Suffolk in the harbour at Devonport. Reginald Rowse, Leading Seaman, plunged in after him, and with difficulty got him to the ship's gangway.

At 3.30 p.m. on the 17th March, 1913, a man named Carty was crossing the river at Dromahair, co. Leitrim, by means of a plank and fell in, the river being in flood and 6 to 8 feet deep. Daniel Ryan, schoolboy, plunged in and managed to land him some distance down.

At 2 p.m. on the 3rd June, 1913, a youth named Carter was bathing in a lake at Edmonton, the depth being over 10 feet, and got into difficulty. Lawrence Sailing, who has only one leg, went in, and after diving many times found him and got him out, but he did not recover.

At 2 p.m. on the 5th November, 1912, a man, in attempting suicide, threw himself into the river at Lewella, Ceylon. Mana Seyadu, at great risk, swam out 30 yards, and was successful in saving him.

On the morning of the 10th January, 1913, it was found that a schooner had been driven on shore near Carnoustie during the night, and a man was seen clinging to the rigging, there being a heavy surf running. Arthur Simpson and A.J. Lamont went out into the surf and at great risk rescued the man, who had jumped from the wreck.

At 6.15 a.m. on the 25th November, 1912, a man named Kelly fell overboard from a steamer in Plymouth harbour, there being a strong ebb tide and the morning dark. Walter H. Skinner, A.B., jumped after him and caught him, when Cyril Cross also went in, and together they got him back to the steamer.

At 6.30 p.m. on the 10th May, 1913, two girls, while picking flowers, fell into the Lea at Edmonton, the depth being about 10 feet. Albert Sleet jumped in from a boat, and landing, ran along the bank to the place, and again going in succeeded in saving both.

At 8 .a.m. on the 4th August, 1913, a youth named Keeling got into difficulty while bathing in a rough sea at Roker. F.W. Robson went to his help but was drowned. Jas. Slimin and John Coates swam out and attempted to rescue both but failed.

At 1.40 p.m. on the 22nd September, 1913, a stoker belonging to H.M.S. Europa fell overboard from the vessel at Portsmouth. Commander Norman L. Stanley at once jumped after him, and, with a lifebuoy, kept him afloat till they were picked up.

At 6.45 p.m. on the 26th December, 1912, a seaman, when going on board his ship, fell into the Tyne at Dunston, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. John T. Storey jumped in fully clothed and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

At 7 p.m. on the 4th February, 1913, a woman accidentally fell from the quay into the harbour at Cork, there being a depth of 16 feet. Stewart F. Swan, chief Officer of the s.s. Kenmare, plunged in and caught her, and they were lifted out by a crane chain.

At 11 a.m. on the 28th June, 1912, a sailing boat with fourteen persons on board was capsized by a squall 4 miles from shore at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands. Teriakai, after a swim of 14 hours, managed to reach land, when help was got, and 13 persons who had held on to the boat were rescued.

At 4.40. p.m. on the 16th June, 1913, a young woman got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Villers Sur Mer, France. Gertrude L. Todd swam out and caught her, but after being carried out a long distance had to let go in order to save herself.

At 12.50 p.m. on the 1st October, 1913, a boy fell into the Thames from the Union Wharf at Greenwich, the depth being 15 feet. Frederick Tolfree went in and caught him and then held on to a ring in the wall till a boat reached them.

At 11.10 p.m. on the 4th August, 1913, a woman, in attempting suicide, threw herself into the Wensum at Norwich, the depth being 9 feet. Private E. Townshend, 12th Lancers, swam out and was successful in saving her.

At 12.15 p.m. on the 15th March, 1913, a man named Newman was thrown from his horse into the Kennet at Reading and was being carried away by the current. Sydney J. Turner plunged in and caught him, but could not retain his hold, and he was drowned.

At 1.30 p.m. on the 26th September, 1913, a child fell into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth at the time being 20 feet. Abraham Walker, aged 13, plunged in fully clothed and effected the rescue.

At 12.40 p.m. on the 13th May, 1913, two youths fell into the Wharfe at Bolton Abbey, the water being very deep at the place. Myles R. Walker went in and succeeded in saving one, but failed in his attempt to save the other, who was drowned.

At 7.30 p.m. on the 21st November, 1913, a boy accidentally fell into the harbour at Weymouth, there being a strong tide, the depth 15 feet, and the night dark. Samuel H. Wallis, aged 60, jumped in fully clothed and supported him for twenty minutes, when they were picked up by a boat.

At 1 p.m. on the 19th September, 1913, a man accidentally fell overboard from H.M.S. Sandpiper in the Canton River, China, there being a strong undercurrent and the depth 12 to 15 feet. Frederick C. Walter, A.B. went after him fully clothed but was clutched and dragged under, and although he afterwards dived repeatedly failed to save him.

On the morning of the 30th October, 1912, Private Hague, of the 8th Hussars, was crossing the Goomti River at Lucknow on his horse and got into difficulty, the river being 10 to 12 feet deep and very treacherous. Captain E.G. Weldon, Captain A.C. Curell, and Captain A.F. Henderson all went in and endeavoured to save him, but failed.

At 7 p.m. on the 22nd February, 1913, a man fell from a gangway into the harbour at Fiume, Hungary, there being a heavy sea running. W.B. Wheeler, seaman on the s.s. Brescia, plunged in, and, with difficulty held him till they were got out with a rope.

At 11.30 a.m. on the 7th March, 1913, two children fell into the Severn at Worcester, the depth being 14 feet and the river in flood. A. Williams and F. Norman plunged in, and at great risk saved both boys.

Woodruff, Grace, Miss   Case 40442

On the morning of the 19th September, 1913, Mrs Woodruff, her daughter Grace, and a boatman, were out in a small sailing boat at Mylor, Falmouth, and when about a mile from shore the boat capsized. Miss Woodruff caught her mother and started to swim ashore, but unfortunately she collapsed and died before land was reached, and Miss Woodruff then rendered help to the boatman, who was in a most exhausted state.
