Andrews, James P. Police Constable. Case 41291

On the 21st November 1914, a girl of 18, in attempting suicide, threw herself into the Clyde near Rutherglen Bridge, Glasgow, the depth being 10 feet and the night cold and frosty. Andrews undressed, swam out 25 yards, and succeeded in saving her.

On the 17th August 1913, during a typhoon a Chinese junk was driven on the rocks near Hong-Kong the sea being very rough at the time. Ashton, with a line round him, went out and succeeded in saving a number of men as they jumped from the junk.

Atkins, George P. Case 41024

On the 20th July 1914, Robert Waring, aged 10, fell from a boat into the Lee at Glenbrook, Co. Cork, the depth being 8 fathoms. Atkins, aged 13, at once plunged in from another boat and was successful in saving him.

Bapty, Philip B. 3rd Engineer. Case 40593

On the 29th September 1913, a child accidentally fell into the Tavoy River, Burma, there being a strong ebb tide and the depth 2 to 4 fathoms. Bapty, 3rd Engineer on the British India Steam Navigation Co.'s SS Bhadra, jumped in from that vessel and caught the child and they were picked up by a boat about half a mile from the ship.

On the 3rd April 1914, George Robinson while at work in the Easington Colliery, Co. Durham, was overcome by a flow of gas liberated by a fall of coal which also caught him. Barker, McGorrigan, McManus and Moody all went to his help and after several attempts he was eventually reached and got out but did not recover.

Beal, Victor H. Boy HMS Ganges. Case 41097

On the 21st August 1914, a boy accidentally fell from the quay into the Stour at Harwich, the depth being about 18 feet with flood tide. Beal jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 25th December 1913, a seaman fell from a boat into the harbour at Portsmouth, the depth being 8 fathoms and the night dark. Benson pluinged in and kept the man afloat until a boat reached them and picked them up.

Bentheim, Emile. A Belgian. Case 41285

On the 18th November 1914, a man accidentally fell into the inner harbour at Ramsgate, there being no lights and the water deep. Bentheim plunged in and held him till further help came and they were got out.

Bevan, William J. Case 41139

On the 1st September 1914, a man named Pearce threw himself into the Usk at Brecon and was carried out some 30 yards, the depth being about 12 feet. Bevan swam out and caught him but owing to his struggles was unable to bring him in.

On the 18th January 1914, a man fell into the sea at Bombay and was carried out about 150 yards. Bhiku swam out and succeeded in bringing him to shore.

Booth, Lionel H. Doctor West African Medical Staff. Case 40726

On the 6th January 1914, Booth and his native dispenser were in a canoe which capsized in the Warri River, Southern Nigeria, the water being deep and alligators present. Dr Booth swam to the help of the man and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Botting, Henry. Petty Officer Torpedo Boat 22. Case 40602

On the 19th January 1914, Henry Gow fell overboard from a boat half a mile from shore in the Stour at Parkstone, the night being dark and cold. Botting jumped in but failed to reach him, both men being picked up by a boat.

On the 4th September 1913, a man in the course of his work went down the well at the waterworks Kensington Gardens to a platform 130 feet below the surface and was there overcome by carbon monoxide gas. Messrs Brown, Herbert, Wilcocks and Coleman went to his assistance and between them succeeded in saving him.

On the 20th November 1914, a man in the darkness fell into the Dock Lock at Grangemouth, there being no lights and the depth 20 feet. Brown plunged in and caught him, and they were got out with ropes.

On the 5th August 1914, shortly after the German mine layer Konigen Louise had been sunk in the North Sea a German officer was seen in the water in an exhausted state. Bury and Haycroft plunged overboard and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 19th May 1914, a boy accidentally fell into 18 feet of water in the Clyde at Whiteinch Ferry. Campbell, fireman on the ferry steamer, plunged in and was successful in saving him.

Carlton, George E. A.B. HMS Terror. Case 40756

On the 26th October 1913, a sapper belonging to the R.E. fell overboard from a boat one and half miles from land at Bermuda, the night being dark and the sea rough. Carlton at once went after him and with a lifebuoy kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Caufield, Thomas. Case 41293

On the 3rd November 1914, a child accidentally fell into the Braid River, Ballymena. Caufield went in and succeeded in saving him.

Chichester, Cecil. Commander HMS Hornet. Case 40852

On the 14th June 1914, a man named Ness, while bathing in the Forth at South Queensferry was carried away by the tide. Chichester ran a quarter of a mile and then swimming out 150 yards caught the man and was bringing him in when E C Finlay, a boy on HMS Woolwich, went out and assisted in landing him.

Civil, Herbert G. E.R.A. 3rd Class HMS Lark. Case 41286

On the 22nd October 1914, a stoker accidentally fell overboard from HMS Lark in the Stour at Harwich, there being a two and a half knot tide and the night dark. Civil went after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat 15 minutes after.

On the 28th March 1914, a boy, while at play, fell into the Ouse at Godmanchester, the river being in flood and 30 feet deep. Cross plunged in and managed to reach him and then hold him up till a boat reached them.

On the 5th October 1913, the district of Ratnapura, Ceylon, was visited by heavy floods and many persons took refuge in trees and on the roofs of houses. de Hoedt went out with a rescue boat from which he went in and swimming from place to place was the means of saving twelve persons.

Dodd, John Colin. Leading Seaman. Case 40633

On the 12th February 1914, a man accidentally fell overboard from HMS Hindustan at Spithead, there being a two-knot tide and the water very cold. Dodd at once jumped after him but failed to reach him before he sank and was himself picked up a quarter of a mile from the ship.

On the 14th March 1913, a boy of 9 fell into the sea at Langebaan, Cape Colony. Enderstein, aged 12, plunged in and rescued him. On the 31st October 1913, a girl fell into a depth of 15 feet and was carried away by the tide. On this occasion also Enderstein went in and rescued her.

On the 2nd January 1914, a seaman belonging to HMS Cadmus fell from a boat in the river at Shanghai. Farquhar jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat from the ship.

On the 20th September 1914, a man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the river at Satara, India, the river being in flood and 12 feet deep. Festing and Gade plunged in and between them succeeded in saving him.

Fleming, David H. Boatswain. Case 41156

On the 26th August 1914, a boy accidentally fell overboard from HMS Iron Duke while that vessel was being coaled at sea. Fleming at once went after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

Fredericksen, Christian. Of the Danish SS Helga. Case 41277

On the 9th November 1914, a man named Boswell was accidentally knocked into the harbour at Granton. There was a strong gale blowing, and the depth 15 to 20 feet. Fredericksen went in and rescued him.

Fryer, John. Case 40932

On the 3rd July 1914, a man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth being about 30 feet. Fryer plunged in and kept him afloat till a boat came and they were landed.

Gunnery, Aleyn N. 2nd Officer on P. and O. SS Osiris. Case 40629

On the 7th February 1914, A G Lundholm, who was insane, jumped overboard from a boat in the harbour at Brindisi. Gunnery, who was in the boat, at once went after him and in spite of his struggles kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 18th November 1913, a man was in a boat which capsized in 14 feet of water 150 yards from shore in the harbour at Bataiba, crocodiles being numerous. Hamisi swam out from shore and succeeded in saving him.

Harbert, Bertram. Boatman H.M. Coastguard. Case 40757

On the 1st May 1914, a boat with seven men on board was capsized near Aldeburgh, the night being dark and the sea rough. Harbert, who was one of the men, was swimming for land when hearing cries for help he returned and succeeded in taking one man to shore.

On the 15th October 1914, two ladies fell from the mole into the sea at Gibraltar, the night being dark and the mole 12 feet above water level. Harris and Spencer at once jumped in and caught them and lifebuoys being got they were pulled out.

On the 20th February 1914, a man named Hudson fell overboard from a barge in the Thames off Charlton, the depth being 25 feet and the weather very cold. Hart plunged in and kept him afloat for 15 minutes when they were picked up.

Harvey, John D. Sub-Lieut HMS Phoenix. Case 40557

On the 5th October 1913, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from a boat some 200 yards from shore at Longhope, Orkney. Harvey at once plunged in but being clutched and dragged under was unable to save the man, who was drowned.

Harwood, William. Bandmaster SS Columbia. Case 41140

On the 8th August 1914, an unknown man threw himself overboard fron the SS Coloumbia in the Ambrose Channel, New York. Harwood went after him but failed to find him and he was drowned.

Hattersley-Smith, G.A. Lt. Case 40718

On the 16th February 1914, A F Hodge, Stoker P.O., was knocked overboard owing to the cutter from HMS Pegasus being run into by a dhow in Lamu Harbour, British East Africa. Hattersley-Smith and Assistant Inspector E S Higgins, Somaliland Police, both jumped in and between them succeeded in saving the man.

Holland, Stephen. Case 40780

On the 14th April 1914, a woman threw herself into the Liffey at Dublin and a man on going to help her by means of a lifebuoy line also got into difficulty. Holland then went in and succeeded in rescuing both.

On the 4th January 1914, a man named Mattey fell into the Roath Dock, Cardiff, in a dangerous position between a vessel and the quay. Thomas W Harvey and PC Hunt went in and between them succeeded in saving the man.

On the 11th March 1914, a boat with two men on board was capsized in a narrow passage between some rocks and the mainland at Masqat, Arabia. Isri who had got out himself went back and succeeded in saving his companion who was in difficulty.

Jackson, Joseph. Case 41267

On the 18th September 1914, a man accidentally fell into the Liffey at Dublin, the depth being 12 to 15 feet and the tide running fast. Jackson plunged in and caught him and with the help of a rope got him out.

On the 13th April 1914, two girls and a man were thrown into the sea about one mile off Hastings owing to their boat capsizing when alongside a smack. James at once jumped in from the smack and kept them afloat till they were picked up.

On the 27th December 1913, a man named Gray accidentally fell into the Tidal Basin at West Hartlepool, the depth being 28 feet and the night dark and cold. Johnson was lowered into the Basin and brought Gray to the side, and he was pulled out.

Jones, L.J. Lieut. Case 40600

On the 25th October 1913, Lieut. G E J Wills, West India Regt., was bathing in the sea at Sussex, Sierra Leone, and got into difficulty 100 yards from shore. Lieut. Jones went to his help but being twice clutched was unable to save him and he was drowned.

On the 12th December 1913, a seaman while returning to his ship fell into the dock at Portland, Oregon, USA. Jubb left his bunk and plunged in held him till a rope was got and he was pulled out.

Khan, Leng. Case 40569

On the 12th September 1913, three men who were at work in a coke scrubber in the gas works at Singapore were overcome by the fumes, the scrubber being 16 feet deep and 4 feet in diameter. Khan went down and got them one by one into a basket and they were pulled out.

Kitwatschinski, R. Fireman on SS Swindon of London. Case 40560

On the 19th November 1913, a man, who was returning to his ship in the harbour at Ancona, accidentally fell in between the vessel and the quay. Kitwatschinski jumped in but failed to find him and he was drowned.

On the 2nd October 1913, the ferry boat with a number of passengers on board was struck by a tornado and capsized half a mile from shore at Addah on the Gold Coast, the water being 6 to 10 feet deep and abounding with sharks and crocodiles. Kotey, Nyan, Dadzie, Kwemin, Botchey, Kumi and Anmah went in from canoes and saved ten persons three being drowned.

Lappin, Archibald. Case 40564

On the 21st November 1913, R McCormick fell into the harbour at Belfast and a companion, in going to his help, also got into difficulty. Lappin, a youth of 16, plunged in and kept both afloat until they were got into a boat.

Lauder, Albert. Case 41012

On the 9th July 1914, Eddie Reeves who cannot swim was bathing in the sea at Portsmouth and was carried out some distance into deep water. Lauder, aged 13, swam out and brought him to shore.

Lavery, John. Case 40724

On the 7th May 1914, a boy accidentally fell from the Training Ship Empress in the Gareloch at Row the depth being 7 fathoms and the tide very strong. Lavery, aged 15, plunged in from the ship and swam with him to the gangway where he was got on board.

On the 19th december 1913, J W Ivinson fell from the quay into the Tyne at Newcastle, the depth being 18 feet and the water foul and very cold. Leach plunged in from a ship and succeeded in getting him to the side, when George Ahlberg went down a pile and assisted until a boat came and picked them up.

MacLean, John M. Case 40655

On the 27th February 1914, a woman accidentally fell into the harbour at Stornaway, the depth being 22 feet and the night dark and stormy. MacLean plunged in and was successful in saving her.

MacLean, John N. 3rd Officer SS Clan Shaw. Case 40630

On the 16th February 1914, a man accidentally fell overboard from the SS Clan Shaw in the harbour at Dundee, the morning being very dark. MacLean plunged in and caught the man but could not hold him and he was drowned.

Maier, Henry. Case 40793

On the 21st May 1914, the Rev. F E Gray was bathing in the Dart at Buckfastleigh and got into difficulty 10 yards out in a depth of 12 feet. Joseph Zettel went in to his help but was clutched. Maier then went in and succeeded in saving both.

Malone, Peter. Sergeant. Case 40588

On the 23rd October 1913, three men belonging to the 1st Bn. Worcestershire Regt., while bathing in the sea at Chatby, near Alexandria, got into difficulty. Sergt. Malone went in and managed to save two men, the third being drowned.

Martin, Robert W. Gunner. Bronze Clasp. Case 40632

On the 3rd february 1914, the cutter Snipe while being towed by HMS Leda filled and sank in 40 feet of water three and a half miles off Clacton. Oswald C Abbott, AB, who was in the cutter, was at once in difficulty and seeing this Martin who was also in the boat went to his help and supported him till they were picked up.

Matthewson, J.M. Case 40716

On the 13th April 1914, a woman fell into the Earl Grey Dock at Dundee, the depth being 12 feet, the water foul, and the night dark and cold. Matthewson plunged in and by the light from a bicycle lamp found her and succeeded in saving her.

McAffer, Archibald. Telephone Linesman. Case 41016

On the 3rd August 1914, a man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself from the Victoria Bridge into the Clyde at Glasgow. McAffer swam out from the side and succeeded in saving him.

McCarter, John. Case 40620

On the 29th December 1913, a boat with three men on board was capsized in a rough sea outside the harbour at Ballintoy, Co. Antrim. Two of the men held on to the boat, the third, named Gault, being carried away. McCarter left the boat and with much difficulty got him back to it, holding him there till further help came and they were picked up.

On the 28th January 1914, a boy fell into the Tyne at Dunston, the depth being 15 feet and the water foul. McDonough plunged in and was successful in saving him.

McNeill, Archibald W. Case 40612

On the 16th January 1914, a youth named Chisholm fell through the ice on a pond at Oban, the break taking place 15 to 20 yards from the side and the depth 8 feet. Ian Menzies went to his help, but also fell in and lost his life. McNeill went out on the ice to try and reach them but also fell in and was only rescued with the greatest difficulty by means of a rope.

On the 3rd January 1914, a man named McLeod fell into the harbour at Greenock in a very dangerous position between a ship and the quay. M'Dougal went down and with the utmost difficulty succeeded in saving him.

Mkuwe, Native Constable. Case 40967

On the 1st March 1914, a man in attempting to cross the Umniate River, Southern Rhodesia, was swept off his feet by the current. Mkuwe went in to his help but being clutched and dragged under was unable to rescue him.

On the 7th September 1913, a man when returning to his ship fell into the harbour at Bahia Blanca. Morris went in and after diving found him and got him out, but he did not recover.

Muazim, Dafadar Boatman. Case 40641

On the 27th October 1911, driver Gammie of the RFA, accidentally fell into the Kabul River at Nowshera, the water being 12 feet deep and very cold. Muazim swam after him and with the help of a plank got him out after being 20 minutes in the water.

On the 15th December 1913, a seaman named Geddes fell into the harbour at Linnton, Portland, Oregon, the weather being foggy. Nilson went in and caught him but failed to retain his hold and he was drowned.

On the 17th March 1914, Pte. Falkiner, Royal Munster Fusiliers, fell overboard from the R.I.M. SS Sladen into the Irrawady at Prome, Burma, the night being dark and the current strong. O'Reilly plunged in after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

Paddy, Servant. Case 40586

On the 17th September 1913, a man fell from a canoe into the Cross River at Oron, Southern Nigeria, the depth being 20 feet, the distance from the side 30 to 40 yards and danger from crocodiles. Paddy, aged 16, who knew the danger swam out and rescued him.

Parnell, J.B.M. Lieut. the Hon. Case 40578

On the 28th December 1913, a boat belonging to HMS Newcastle having on board Parnell and Leonard Stace was capsized in the harbour at Wei-hai-wei, the nearest help being about a mile away. While Stace clung to the boat Parnell swam to HMS Virago from which a boat put off and Stace was eventually picked up.

On the 12th July 1914, a woman while walking in her sleep fell down a well 25 feet deep with 10 feet of water at the bottom at Bombay. Patkar jumped in and kept her afloat till they were got out with ropes.

Pattison, John. Leading Stoker HMS Swift. Case 41244

On the 16th October 1914, after HMS Hawke had been blown up in the North Sea by a German submarine, Sergt. Hall RMLI, who had clung to a raft for 24 hours, was washed off and seen to be sinking. Pattinson plunged in from HMS Swift and kept him up till they were got on board.

On the 10th October 1914, a man accidentally fell overboard from Torpedo Boat 7 off the North Knock Buoy. Peake at once plunged in after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

Pederson, Svend. A Danish Seaman. Case 41288

On the 22nd November 1914, a man named Kay fell into the East Dock at Burntisland, there being no lights and the depth 20 feet. Pederson plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

Pell, Richard. Case 40721

On the 15th April 1914, a lad accidentally fell from a boat into the Weir at Sunderland, the depth being 30 feet and the tide half flood. W Dillon jumped in but was clutched and Pell then went in and held him till a boat came.

Phelps, John F. Case 40691

On the 13th April 1914, a woman in some way got into the Thames at Putney and was carried out 40 yards, the night being dark and the depth 11 feet. Phelps jumped in from the pier and succeeded in saving her.

On the 19th July 1914, a boy accidentally fell into an old marl pit 36 feet deep at Hill Top and his father on going down to his help also got into difficulty. Pincher went in fully clothed and rescued them one at a time.

On the 15th August 1914, two men were thrown into the Bure at Wroxham by the capsizing of a boat, the depth being 12 to 14 feet. Powles jumped in from a launch and rescued one man and attempted to save the other but failed.

Rahman, Abdul. Sowar 39th Central India Horse. Case 40581

On the 18th September 1913, a boy was bathing in the lake at Agar Malwa, India, and sank in a depth of 15 feet, 10 yards from the side. Rahman went in and after diving three times found him and brought him to the bank.

Rannard, John D. Chief Engineer on trawler Straton. Case 41202

On the 5th September 1914, after the SS Runo had been sunk by a German Mine in the North Sea, a Russian lady and her child were seen to let go an upturned boat to which they had been clinging. Rannard jumped in and caught both and they were got on board the trawler.

Saliba, Salvatore. Case 40711

On the 6th December 1913, two men were in a fishing boat which capsized in the sea at Malta. Both men held on to the boat till a launch came up and threw a rope which one of them, Saliba, put round his companion but he slipped from the rope and Saliba then dived and got him up and he was taken on board the launch.

On the 1st October 1913, a man named Glass fell overboard from a launch in the Tyne at Wallsend, the night being dark and the depth 25 feet. Scott plunged in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 4th January 1914, two men were engaged cleaning out a spirit tank at Eccles and were overcome by the fumes and became unconscious. Seddon and Cargill went in through the 18 inch manhole and were successful in saving both men.

Sims, A. Sergeant Army Ordnance Corps. Case 41265

On the 13th September 1914, two French ladies when landing from a small boat fell into the Loire at Chantenay, France, the night being dark and the current strong. Sims plunged in and was successful in saving both.

On the 1st September 1913, a man was crossing the river at Rangilpur, India, and was swept away by the current. Singh plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

Smith, Ronald C. Case 41146

On the 5th September 1914, two girls got into difficulty while bathing at Torquay, the sea being very rough at the time. Frank Dewdney went to their help but was drowned. On the 28th June 1914, three men were attempting to cross the Oliphants River, Cape Colony, in a boat when the boat was swept away by the current. Two men jumped from the boat and reached an island, the boat with the third man on board being jammed on the rocks just above the falls. Russell swam out with a rope but was swept over the falls and then got out. He afterwards saved the two men on the island and assisted in saving the third from the boat.

On the 18th December 1913, James Sharp, in attempting suicide, threw himself into the Humber Dock at Hull the depth being 21 feet and the water very cold. Spencer plunged in and with the greatest difficulty kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 10th February 1914, a pony and trap being driven along a quay at Waterford when the pony swerved and backed into the Pill throwing the two occupants of the trap into deep water. Sullivan ran 200 yards and plunged in fully clothed got them out one at a time.

On the 9th January 1914, Patrick Kane threw himself into the dock at Newport, Mon., the night being very cold and the depth 30 feet, Percy plunged in and in spite of his struggles got him to the side and he was pulled out.

On the 30th December 1913, two girls fell through the ice on a pond at Crewe, the depth being from 5 to 7 feet. Tudor, aged 14, threw of his jacket and going in got them out one at a time.

On the 29th June 1914, a woman accidentally fell into the Mula River, Kirkee, India, the river being in flood and 11 feet deep. Tulaskar plunged in and was successful in saving her.

On the 2nd May 1914, a boy of 7 fell into the Regent's Canal at Haggerston, the depth at the place being 7 to 8 feet. Walker, aged 12, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 4th January 1914, a boy fell through the ice on a pond at Newtown, Stockton-on-Tees, the depth of the water being about 9 feet. Walker went in and dived four times under the ice but failed to find him and he was drowned.

On the 19th September 1914, two soldiers of the Black Watch accidentally fell into the harbour at Cromarty, the depth being 18 feet with a strong tide, and the night dark. Watson plunged in and succeeded in saving both men.

On the 11th November 1914, a man accidentally fell from the pier into the harbour at Cromarty, and was carried 30 yards, the sea being choppy with a strong tide. Watson plunged in and with difficulty rescued him.

On the 9th December 1913, a man in attempting suicide threw himself into the Thames at Oxford, the depth being 16 feet and the current strong. Watts went in and succeeded in getting him out, but he died later from the effects of the immersion.

On the 21st January 1914, a woman accidentally fell into the Forth and Clyde canal at Firhill, Glasgow, the night being dark and cold. Weir plunged in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 19th January 1914, a seaman belonging to HMS Brisk accidentally fell from a boat at Saltash, the night being dark and cold. Wilkinson plunged in but in the darkness failed to find him and he was drowned.

On the 1st June 1914, a man, in an attempt at suicide, threw himself from the ferry boat in Millbrook Lake, Plymouth, there being a strong flood tide and the boat going 9 knots. Windle plunged in after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 14th August 1914, a woman, in an attempt at suicide, threw herself into the Thames at Charing Cross, the depth being 14 feet with a strong tide. Woodruff plunged in and kept her afloat till they were picked up.

On the 22nd March 1914, an old man of 73 fell into the harbour at Whitby and was carried out into 12 feet of water, the night being dark. Wray jumped in fully clothed, swam out 50 yards, and brought him to the side.

On the 1st March 1914, a boat with three men on board was capsized in the surf at Osmington, near Weymouth. Two of the men managed to reach the rocks and save themselves, but the third was washed away. Young and Bradfield swam out with lines and rescued him.
