Ali, Juma bin.

On the 12th August 1914, a man was crossing the Tana River, East Africa, by a rope hand over hand when he let go and was swept away by the current. Adawa and Ali went in and were successful in saving him.

Aldridge, W.J.L. Case 41420

On the 20th February 1915, a youth named Edge fell down an old shaft at Bucknall, the distance to the water being 40 feet and the water 75 feet deep. With a rope round him Aldridge, aged 15, was lowered down, and twisting his legs round him they were drawn up.

Alexander, Thomas. Case 42168

On the 1st November 1915, a seaman was washed overboard from the SS Stanislas, in the English Channel, the weather being too rough to launch a boat. Alexander went overboard with a line and caught him, and they were then pulled on board, but the man did not recover.

Arjun, Kirshna. Case 41364

On the 22nd July 1914, a boat with four men on board capsized when crossing the Maneri River, Bombay, the river being in flood and 30 feet deep. Arjun repeatedly went to the help of a comrade and eventually succeeded in saving him.

On the 27th March 1915, owing to the capsize of a boat, a man was thrown into Dundrum Bay, the night being dark and the depth 20 feet. Armstrong swam out 30 yards and brought him to land.

Bailey, Ernest W. Assistant Paymaster. Case 41589

On the 27th May 1915, a man fell overboard from one of HM ships in harbour with a strong flood tide. Bailey jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

Bakhsh, Ahmed. Police Constable. Case 41495

On the 14th December 1913, a boy fell down a well 53 feet deep with 18 feet of water in it at Noushara, India. Bakhsh jumped in and held him till they were got out with a rope.

Barron, Jonathan. Case 41925

On the 21st August 1915, a boy fell into a deep gulley at the foot of a cliff at Mevagissey, the depth being 12 feet. Barron slid down the steep cliff for 60 feet and going in rescued him.

Basnyat, Nain B. Jamadar 2nd Rifles Nepalese Contingent. Case 42200

On the 4th October 1915, a man accidentally fell into the Jumna at Lakwa, India, and was being carried away by the current. Basnyat went in and succeeded in saving him.

Batt, A.M. Case 42101

On the 7th September 1915, Patty Hickman, aged 11, was bathing in the sea at Drigg and was carried out some 300 yards holding to a lifebuoy. There was no boat to hand and after the girl had been an hour and a half in this position Miss Batt swam out and was successful in bringing her to shore.

On the 16th October 1915, a man in trying to swim across the river at Nagoman Camp, N W India, got into difficulty. Beard went in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 28th December 1914, a woman was seen floating in the Wuri River, Cameroons, West Africa. Beauchamp, although he knew the river was infested with crocodiles, jumped in and rescued her.

Belcher, Percy. Boy Training Brig King Alfred. Case 41861

On the 8th August 1915, a man accidentally fell into the Thames at Reading owing to the breaking of a punt-pole. Belcher, aged 15, jumped in and supported him till a boat reached them.

Belither, Sidney. Case 41922

On the 12th August 1915, a boy accidentally fell overboard from a steamer on the Thames off Sunbury, the depth being 16 feet. Belither went after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

Bell, W.B. Capt. 12th Royal Lancers. Case 41879

On the 16th August 1915, Dudley Bond while bathing in the sea at Westgate was carried out some distance. Bell, who was suffering from the effects of wounds, swam out and succeeded in saving him.

On the 11th August 1914, a girl accidentally fell into the sea at Portsmouth. Bell jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

Blake, Fred. Case 41348

On the 2nd January 1915, two men, in trying to cross the flooded road at Amesbury were swept into the Avon and were carried down for 100 yards, when they were caught in the branches of a fallen tree. Geo. Abrahams, W.Barclay and Blake, aged 15, went out along the submerged tree and after 30 minutes work in the dark got both out.

On the 28th September 1915, Pte. J W Jameson, who cannot swim, walked into the Lys River, France, in the darkness. Boagey jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

Bonanud, Alphonse. Trumpeter, 145th Territorial Regt., French Army. Case 41352

On the 10th January 1915, a man of the Military Police fell into the dock at Marseilles, the depth being 26 feet and very cold. Bonanud plunged in and kept him afloat till they were got out, but the man did not recover.

Edmunds, W.B. Sapper.

On the 16th June 1915, Sapper Cross RE fell from a pontoon bridge into the creek at Brightlingsea, the depth being 18 feet and the tide strong. Bonner and Edmunds went in and were able to bring him to land.

Boyle, George. Quartermaster. Case 41343

On the 29th November 1914, a man in trying to board the SS Nagoya, fell into the harbour at Kobe, Japan, the night being very dark. Boyle jumped in and supported him till further help came and they were got out.

Brett, Alfred E. Case 41822

On the 8th August 1915, Geo. Bloomfield, aged 8, got into difficulty while bathing in the Lea at Ponders End. His elder brother, F H Bloomfield, went in to his help but also got into difficulty and lost his life. Brett, aged 10, then went in and was able to save the younger boy.

Brewester, Charles. Case 41547

On the 11th April 1915, a girl accidentally fell into the Tyne at Wallsend, the depth being 14 feet with a strong ebb tide. Brewester at once plunged in and caught her and they were got out with a rope.

Brockey, W.G. Pte. West Kent Regt. Case 41421

On the 17th February 1915, the lifeboat capsized in the sea at Worthing, one of the men being washed away. Brockey went in and succeeded in landing him, but he did not recover.

Brown, H.C. Second Officer SS Erinpura. Case 41440

On the 17th November 1914, a sepoy was on a barge which sank in the Shatt el Arab in Mesopotamia during a storm. Brown swam out and eventually succeeded in saving him.

Brown, Walter. Case 42195

On the 1st December 1915, a lad accidentally fell into the Victoria Dock, the depth being 17 feet and dark at the time. Brown, aged 15, went in and caught but was unable to hold him and he was drowned.

Bruce, W.F. Lieut. 47th Div. Signal Co. Case 41554

On the 13th May 1915, two men were in a wagon which was backed over the bank into the La Bassee Canal, France. Bruce went in and succeeded in saving both men, bringing them out one at a time.

On the 14th May 1915, a man fell overboard from one of HM ships at sea. Burke jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 19th January 1915, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from his ship in Suva Harbour, Fiji, there being great danger from sharks. Burrows and Kemsley jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 5th November 1915, a man accidentally fell into the harbour at Portsmouth, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. Burton plunged in and caught him, and they were got out with a rope.

Cail, W. Quartermaster. Case 42028

On the 20th August 1915, G Somerfield was accidentally knocked overboard from the SS Abrosso into the Calabar River, West Africa, there being danger from crocodiles and sharks. Cail plunged in and caught him and they were picked up by a boat.

On the 17th December 1914, a woman with her horse and cart when crossing the river at Gardenblake, Co. Galway, was swept away by the current, the river being in flood. Carty plunged into the swollen stream and managed to get her out.

Chetti, Seurman. Fisherman. Case 41935

On the 27th July 1914, six persons where thrown into the Coleroon River, Madras, owing to the capsizing of a boat, the depth being 30 feet and the current strong. Chetti jumped from his boat and assisted in getting all six on board two other boats which were put out to the rescue.

On the 20th July 1915, a man accidentally fell into the harbour at Ayr, the depth being 8 to 10 feet. Clark went in and held him till they were picked up.

On the 21st December 1914, a youth slipped and fell into the harbour at Genoa in a dangerous position between two vessels. Clayson and Denby went in and supported him till they were got out with ropes.

Coe, Bertie. AB. Case 41371

On the 24th December 1914, a man slipped into the dock at Grimsby between a ship and the quay, the night being dark and bitterly cold. Coe, on one of HM ships, at once went in and got a rope round him and he was pulled out.

Collings, E.B. Doctor. Case 41311

On the 2nd December 1914, a boy fell into the the canal at Barnsley and his mother went in to try and save him but failed. Dr. Collings went in from the opposite side and rescued the woman. Again going in he brought the boy out but he did not recover.

Connell, John. Case 41473

On the 29th March 1915, a lad accidentally fell into the Aire at Castleford, the depth being 16 feet. Connell, aged 12, jumped in fully clothed and effected his rescue.

Conway, Peter. Lce.-Corpl. Leinster Regt. Case 41939

On the 2nd August 1915, a man took cramp while bathing in the sea at Blackrock. Conway, who was suffering from wounds received in action swam out and rescued him.

Cothey, John R. Case 41774

On the 17th July 1915, J H Bromley went into Devonport Harbour to try and save another man and was himself carried away. Cothey went in and succeeded in saving him.

Coughtrey, Thomas H. Case 41317

On the 1st December 1914, a man accidentally stepped from a lighter 1500 yards from the shore at Sheerness, there being a strong tide and the night dark. Coughtrey jumped overboard but did not succeed in finding him.

Coultas, Harry P. Police Constable. Case 41425

On the 19th February 1915, a special constable from a patrol boat fell into the Tees at Middlesborough, there being a strong tide and the night dark. Coultas plunged in, but in the darkness failed to find him.

Coupland, E. Quartermaster-Sergt. RMLI. Case 42122

On the 18th September 1915, a man while fishing from the wharf fell into Milbay Dock, Plymouth, there being a strong tide running out. Coupland jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

Coupland, William. AB Royal Fleet Reserve. Case 42157

On the 27th September 1915, a man accidentally fell overboard from a lighter at Port Said, the night being very dark and the current strong. Coupland went in but failed to effect the rescue.

Cowan, A.G. Captain 74 Punjabis. Case 41307

On the 10th July 1914, a man while bathing in a strong current at Kowloon, China, became exhausted when 300 yards from shore and called for help. Cowan swam out and with difficulty brought him to shore.

Cresswell, Thomas H. Temporary Surgeon RN. Case 41535

On the 14th April 1915, an insane man jumped from one of HM ships in an open harbour. Cresswell jumped in and towed him to a trawler when they were got on board, but the man was then dead.

Curnow, John. Police Constable. Case 41707

On the 21st April 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the sea at Penzance. Curnow swam out and succeeded in saving her.

Deighton, A. Private. Case 41523

On the 7th May 1915, a Frenchman fell into an underground crater caused by the explosion of a shell at Armentieres, where he was overcome by foul gas. Pte. J.Smith, Royal Fusiliers, went in to his help but was also overcome. Pte. Deighton then went in and got a rope round both men and they were pulled out , but Pte. Smith did not recover.

Dennistoun, G.H. Lieut.-Commander RN. Case 41451

On the 29th September 1914, a man who was painting the side of a ship missed his footing and fell into the harbour at Wellington, New Zealand. Dennistoun plunged in from his ship, swam 50 to 60 yards, and rescued the man.

Derrick, Clifton P. Case 41500

On the 3rd April 1915, a man fell into the Wellington Dock, Dover, the depth being 9 feet. Derrick jumped in and caught him, but as they were being pulled up the line broke four times, letting them back into the dock and they were eventually got into a boat.

Diaper, W.C. Gunner RGA. Case 41814

On the 3rd July 1915, a man while bathing in the sea at Fort Albert, I. of W., was caught by the current and carried out 80 yards. Diaper was called from his bed and swimming out he brought the man to shore.

Din, Emam. Sepoy Military Police. Case 42198

On the 23rd May 1915, a coolie who was demented jumped into the Irrawaddy in Upper Burma, the depth being 15 feet with a dangerous current. Din plunged in and was successful in saving him.

Dodds, R.J.E. Sub-Lt. RNR. Case 41306

On the 17th November 1914, a seaman was accidentally knocked overboard from the SS Peshawar at Scapa Flow, Orkney, it being nearly dark at the time. Dodds and David Sutherland both went after him and supported him until a boat reached them.

On the 12th September 1914, owing to the boat fall slipping, J S Newton was thrown into the sea from one of HM ships. Donnelly at once jumped in and supported him till they picked up.

Duncan, Alexander. Case 41812

On the 27th July 1915, a lad accidentally fell into the Gartmore Dam, Alloa, in a dangerous position near the sluice, the depth being 14 feet . Duncan plunged in and rescued him.

Duthie, John. Mate RNR. Case 41332

On the 2nd November 1914, a man accidentally fell overboard from a vessel in the Moray Firth, there being an easterly gale blowing at the time. Duthie jumped after him and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

East, Michael E. Lieut. RN. Case 41976

On the 28th April 1915, a man fell overboard when trying to moor some lighters to a steamer at sea near the Dardanelles. East jumped in and swam with him to the ship, where he was got on board.

Eden, Ethleen Irene. Case 42173

On the 22nd May 1915, three boys were fishing from a small boat about 100 yards from the shore at Grand Cayman, B.W.I., when the boat capsized, throwing all into the water. Eden swam out and caught two of them, when H Bodden also went out and assisted in bringing them to shore. Miss Eden again went, but failed to save the third boy.

On the 30th April 1915, a man fell down an old pit 60 feet deep at Lostwithiel. Emery and Mather made their way down and at great risk rescued him.

On the 11th December 1914, a man in trying to board his ship fell into the Dock Basin at Swansea, the depth being 25 feet. Evans swam in between a ship and the quay and at great risk rescued him.

On the 9th July 1915, a man threw himself overboard from the hospital ship Syria in the Red Sea. Fargher jumped in to his help, but the man was picked up by a boat before Fargher reached him.

On the 3rd July 1914, a man fell from the ferry boat into the River Indus, India, there being a very strong current running at the time. Farida plunged in but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 1st April 1915, a man who was bathing in the sea at Alexandria got into difficulty 100 yards from the shore, the sea being very rough. Ferguson went to his help and got him ashore in an unconscious state.

Finnegan, Charles. Case 42049

On the 8th September 1915, a man fell from the pier head into the sea at Roundstone, the night being very dark. Finnegan jumped in and swam with him to a fishing boat , where he was pulled on board.

Firebrace, A.N.G. Lieut.-Commander RN Case 41424

On the 10th March 1915, a man accidentally fell overboard from one of HM ships at sea. Firebrace plunged in and kept him afloat till they were picked up by the cutter.

Fisk, W.W. Sub-Lieut. RNR. Case 41588

On the 16th April 1915, a man fell into the Princess Dock, Glasgow, in a dangerous position between the ship and the quay. Fisk went in and supported him till they were got out with a rope.

Foubister, T. Lce.-Corpl. H.M.B. Field Ambulance. Case 42134

On the 25th September 1915, a seaman fell overboard from a transport in Mudros Bay. Foubister plunged in and held him till a boat reached them.

Franks, K.F. Capt. 117th Mahrattas. Case 41938

On the 14th August 1915, a woman while bathing in the sea at Malahide was carried out 30 to 40 yards. Franks, who was suffering from wounds received in action, swam out and rescued her.

Freeman, Sam. Case 42181

On the 21st November 1915, a number of lads were on the ice on a clay pit at St Helens when a break took place and three of them fell in. Two of them sank at once and Freeman then jumped in and caught the third one. The ice was then broken and John Barnes, aged 14, swam out with a rope by which they were pulled in.

On the 28th March 1915, two boys accidentally fell into the sea at Jersey, the depth being 10 feet and the sea rough. Gallichan went in and with difficulty got the elder boy out, but he did not recover. Marcel Lefranc went in and rescued the younger boy.

On the 13th August 1915, a boy accidentally fell into the harbour at Buckpool, the depth being 9 to 10 feet. Gibb, aged 11, went in and effected the rescue.

Gibson, W. Case 41688

On the 5th April 1915, two men were thrown into the sea off Donibrisste owing to the capsizing of a boat. Gibson swam to their help and kept both afloat till they were picked up fifteen minutes after.

On the 11th January 1915, a soldier fell from the quay into the dock at Havre. Giddings went in and supported him till they were got out with a rope

Gillespie, Alfred. 2nd Officer SS Durham. Case 41797

On the 17th July 1915, a French soldier while bathing in the Seine at St Gobain got into difficulty. Gillespie went in but failed to reach him before he sank.

Grant, S.T. Lance-Corpl. Sussex Regt. Case 41888

On the 16th August 1915, a boy fell from the pier into the Arun at Littlehampton, the depth being 12 feet with a strong tide. Grant went in and kept him afloat till a boat reached him.

Green, William. Police Constable. Case 42188

On the 20th November 1915, a youth fell through the ice on a pond at Dalton-in-Furness and went under the ice, the depth being 7 feet. Green, with a rope round him went in and dived under the ice, but he could not find him and was himself got out in an exhausted state.

Greene, David J. Petty Officer. Case 42017

On the 25th July 1915, a man was washed overboard from a submarine in the Mediterranean, the sea being choppy. Greene went after him and succeeded in saving him.

Hall, R.C. 2nd Lieut. York and Lancaster Regt. Case 41878

On the 17th August 1915, a man got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Hornsea. Hall, with some help from 2nd Lieut. J L Napier, succeeded in bringing him to shore.

On the 16th August 1915, two men were fishing from a small boat which was swamped in the sea near Seaham. Halliday swam out and rescued both in an unconscious state.

On the 18th August 1915, a boy fell from the wall into the Thames at Temple Pier. Harris jumped in but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 17th July 1915, a man when going on board one of HM ships at sea from a tender fell from the ladder. Hart and Fowler plunged in and held him up till a boat reached them 200 yards from the ship.

Healey, James P. Student. Case 41909

On the 9th August 1915, a boy while fishing fell into the Shannon at Ruskey Bridge. Healey went in and with considerable difficulty got him out.

Tyrrell, P. Private.

On the 27th August 1914, Pte. Keane, Royal Munster Fusiliers, was washed from a jetty into a tributary of the Irrawaddy, in Burma, the depth being 12 feet, with a strong current. Heslam and Tyrrell jumped in, but failed to reach him and were picked up by a boat.

Higgins, Evelyn S. Asst.-Insp. of Police. Case 41453

On the 3rd January 1915, a man, while crossing the Mathioya River, East Africa, missed his footing and was carried into deep water. Higgins went in fully clothed and got him out.

Higgins, H.J. Coy. Sergt.-Major R.E. Case 41933

On the 21st June 1915, a man fell overboard from a barge into a canal in France, the depth being 14 feet and the water very foul. Higgins went in and succeeded in getting him back to the barge, where he was pulled back on board.

Hildred, W.D. Private Canadian L.I. Case 41892

On the 26th July 1915, a boy while bathing was carried out into deep water in the sea at Southsea. Hildred, who was suffering from wounds, having lost an eye in action, swam out and was successful in saving him.

Hiley, Edmund. Petty officer RN. Case 41637

On the 25th April 1915, an old man of 60 fell into the Tyne at Jarrow, the depth being 30 feet. Hiley jumped in from the ferry boat and held him till they were picked up.

Hopkins, H. Driver RFA. Case 41837

On the 9th August 1915, a woman accidentally fell into the canal at La Bassee and was seen struggling in deep water. Hopkins went in and succeeded in bringing her out.

Hully, Lewis F. Case 41724

On the 25th May 1915, HMS Triumph was sunk at Gaba Tepe and a seaman named Wall was seen to be in difficulty in the sea. Hully jumped in from another ship and supported him till both were picked up.

Richardson, J.H. Private.

On the 26th August 1915, Pte. McHowe and Corpl. M'Laren were in a mine at La Boiselle, France, when M'Laren was overcome by foul gas. McHowe at once went to his help but was also struck down. Sergt. Paterson then went to their help but was so affected that he had to come out. Humphreys then went down and rescued Corpl. M'Laren, Richardson doing a like service for Pte. McHowe.

Huntley, Charles. Case 41710

On the 6th July 1915, a child fell into the Thames at Woolwich and was carried out 20 yards into 10 feet of water. Huntley, aged 12, swam out and caught her, both being then picked up by a boat.

Jackson, J.F. Bugler RMLI. Case 41394

On the 26th February 1915, two men fell overboard from one of HM ships in Portland Harbour, one injuring his head and the other breaking his arm. Jackson jumped in and got a rope round one and held the other until a boat reached them.

Jackson, Thomas B. Case 41482

On the 21st April 1915, a man threw himself into the Mersey at Warrington, the depth being 10 to 12 feet and very treacherous. Jackson plunged in, but being clutched was unable to save him.

Jacobs, Percy J. RMLI. Case 41657

On the 18th March 1915, a man when returning to his ship fell into the Dock Lock at Avonmouth, the night being dark. Jacobs went in and found him, but on being pulled up he fell back into the Lock, and Jacobs could not find him a second time.

Jameson, W.K.E. Major RFA. Case 42024

On the 6th September 1915, a boy accidentally fell from the bridge into the Ouse at Brandon. Driver J Canham RFA jumped in and caught him but became exhausted. Jameson then plunged in and supported both till they were got out with a boat.

On the nights of March 9th, 11th, and 12th 1915, three men, owing to the absence of lights, fell into the harbour at Falmouth, the depth being 20 feet. On each occasion Jappy, of the drifter Thrive, plunged in and effected the rescue.

On the 12th January 1915, a soldier of the Manchester Regt. fell into the dock at Immingham, the depth being 35 feet, and the night dark and bitterly cold. Jefferson jumped in and supported him until the boat reached them.

On the 12th September 1915, a lad while bathing in the sea at Roker was swept out 60 yards by the current. Lce.-Corpl. G H Anderson, York and Lancaster Regt., went to his help but got into difficulty and was drowned. Jennings then swam out and caught him but could not bring him in and he also was drowned.

On the 8th July 1915, Ruby McIntyre while bathing in the sea at Kinghorn was swept out 30 yards into 10 feet of water, the sea being rough. Kyle swam out and succeeded in bringing her to shore.

On the 12th November 1915, a man of the RMLI fell overboard from one of HM ships in a dangerous position between the vessel and the quay, the night being very dark. Leary went in and caught him, and they were then got on board with ropes.

On the 7th January 1915, a woman while bathing in the sea at Hermanus, Cape Colony, was swept out 40 to 50 yards, the sea being very rough. Luyt, ages 15, swam out and succeeded in bringing her to land.

On the 29th April 1915, a man named McPhail fell from the quay into the Clyde at Glasgow, the depth being 14 feet and the water foul. MacDonald jumped in and caught him and they were got out with a rope.

On the 9th October 1913, two women got into deep water in the Gumti at Lucknow. Makka went in and brought both out, but they did not recover.

On the 7th April 1914, a boy accidentally fell into a well at Shahjahanpur, the depth being 13 feet. Makka jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 15th October 1915, a man in the darkness and thick fog walked into the Milwall Dock, the water being foul and 24 feet deep. Maloney jumped in from his ship and swam about for some time, but failed to find him.

On the 1st August 1915, a man and a boy were bathing in the sea at Boulogne and got out of their depth. The boy was saved without any risk, but the man was carried out 150 yards. Mason swam out and brought him to shore, but he did not recover.

On the 12th July 1915, Mrs A W Hyman while bathing in the sea at Alexandria was carried out 100 yards by the strong current. Mattinson and Smith swam out and with difficulty brought her to shore.

On the 5th July 1915, a man first cut his throat and then threw himself into the harbour at Charlestown, the depth being 15 feet. A Rowse jumped in with a lifebuoy but missed him. Maunder then went in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 21st November 1915, a number of persons were on the ice on a pond at Alderley Edge when a break took place and many of them were thrown into the water. McDougal jumped in and was successful in saving two lives. Elizabeth Mullins, Walter Barrable, George Davey and William Wyse unfortunately lost their lives in attempting to save others.

On the 1st May 1915, a man trying to board the picket-boat from one of HM ships fell into the Firth of Forth. McGrath at once jumped after him and supported him till they were picked up.

On the 6th February 1915, a vessel was driven onto the rocks at Peterhead bottom up, when it was found that a man was inside. McRobbie and Baird, at the risk of being swept away, went to the wreck and cutting through the plates got the man out.

On the 4th August 1915, a boat with four persons on board was capsized on the Gareloch off Clynder. Monteith succeeded in supporting the two younger until a boat reached them, the other being drowned.

On the 6th February 1915, a lad was caught by a wave and quickly carried out to sea at Aberystwyth. Price, Corpl. M Griffith, and Pte. B Evans, RAMC, and Pte. J.C.Westwood, ASC, all swam out, but in each case were beaten back by the waves and the boy was drowned.

On the 24th December 1914, a man named Lee fell into the Royal Albert Dock Basin owing to the dense fog then prevailing. Quinsee jumped in and supported him till they were got out with a rope.

On the 18th August 1915, three young women were bathing in the sea at Seapoint, Co. Dublin, and got into deep water. Ryan, aged 14, went in twice and got two of them out, and going in a third time tried to save the remaining one but failed.

On the 19th January 1915, a woman in the darkness walked over the pier head at Westcove, Kerry, the depth being 15 feet. Scorgie jumped in from his vessel and succeeded in saving her.

On the 6th April 1915, a boy was in a boat on the Forth at Musselburgh and was blown out half a mile. Scott, Anderson and Pte. Gilmour, Royal Scots, went out in a leaky boat to try and bring him in. Meanwhile the boy's boat became waterlogged. Gilmour jumped in to try and save the boy but lost his own life. Scott went in to try and save Gilmour but failed. Anderson then went in and swam ashore with Scott.

On the 10th August 1915, Violet and Harold Houghton were bathing in the sea at Abbotsham and got into a gully in a dangerous position. The Rev. Sealy went in and at great risk rescued the girl but failed in his attempt to save the boy.

Setter, Selwood, Bennett, Ward, Cape, Ballantyne and Eugene Murphy, PO, all jumped in from the ship and exerted themselves in saving or attempting to save live. Murphy unfortunately lost his own life after saving one man.

On the 20th September 1915, a man accidentally fell from a launch into the harbour at Queenstown, the sea being choppy. Shaw jumped in from the launch and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 16th May 1915, a man fell from a raft while crossing the Kerkhah River, Persia, the depth being 15 feet and the current strong. Singh swam out and held him up till a boat reached them.

On the 16th July 1915, several persons were bathing in the Suez Canal near Port Said when two of them got into difficulty. Singh went in and saved one of them and attempted to save the other but failed.

On the 20th February 1915, owing to the slipping of a wire rope a man was thrown from the Forth Bridge into the river below. Smith jumped from the bridge, a height of 40 feet, and caught him, but when got on board a launch he did not recover.

On the 31st December 1914, a girl fell into the Stour at Cradley Heath, the water at the place being held up by a culvert. Smith went in and managed to get the girl out, but was himself sucked into the culvert and carried through a distance of some 50 yards.

On the 2nd March 1915, a pinnace was run down by a torpedo boat in the Gulf of Salamis throwing all on board into the water. Stanton supported one man until they were picked up by the boats from some ships near.

On the 12th February 1915, 5 men were in a boat which was capsized by a sudden squall and sank off the coast of Nevis, W.I. One man swam away and reached land. Stapleton got the other three men on a plank and after a swim of ten hours succeeded in landing them.

On the 27th February 1915, a man fell into the Liffey at Dublin, between a steamer and the quay, the depth being 36 feet. Knowing the risk of being crushed, Sweeney jumped in and effected his rescue.

On the 15th May 1915, a child fell into the harbour at Stonehouse, the depth being 10 to 12 feet. Taylor, aged 12, jumped in and kept him up till they were got out with a rope.

On the 15th January 1915, a man was accidentally knocked overboard from a barge into the dock at Bootle, there being a gale blowing at the time. Thomas jumped in, but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 20th August 1915, a man of the R.E. accidentally fell from a transport into the sea at Havre. Thomas jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 10th October 1915, 2nd Lieut. E R King, Warwickshire Regt., in trying to climb the cliff at Swanage got into a position from which he could not move. Thomas volunteered to be lowered over the cliff by a frail rope and after six hours' work succeeded in reaching him, the rescue being effected at 4 a.m. on the morning of October 11th.

On the 26th June 1915, an insane man threw himself into the Clyde at Glasgow, the depth being 27 feet. Tilley jumped in and supported him for fifteen minutes, when a boat reached them.

On the 8th February 1915, a sapper of the RE in trying to recover a pontoon which had broken away, fell into the Trent at Newark, the river being in flood and 20 feet deep. Tolworthy jumped in from a boat and held him till they were picked up.

On the 7th August 1915, a boy accidentally fell into the Tyne at North Shields and was being carried away by the tide. Turner went in fully clothed and was successful in saving him.

On the 22nd June 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the river at Yarmouth, the depth being 16 feet, and the night dark. Turrell went in and took her to a boat where she was got on board.

On the 20th November 1915, Beatrice Turvey fell into the Aire at Castleford during a dense fog. Her sister, Hilda Turvey, swam to her help and succeeded in saving her.

On the 7th April 1915, a man fell from the gangway into the dock at Tilbury, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. Ulyatt jumped in and got him to the dock wall, where they were pulled out.

On the 11th August 1915, Pte. Bentley, Yorkshire Regt., while bathing in the Tees at Darlington got into difficulty in 15 feet of water. Uzzell plunged in and got him out, but he did not recover.

On the 26th December 1914, the lifeboat which had put out to the wreck of a trawler at Peterhead was dashed on the rocks, all the crew being thrown into the sea, which was running high. Wales plunged into the surf and caught one man, but the sea tore him away and he was drowned.

On the 13th November 1914, a soldier fell in between one of HM ships and a transport at Suez, the space between the vessels being 2 feet, the wind being high and the sea rough. Walls at the risk of being crushed went down but did not find him.

On the 18th July 1915, two children, aged 4 and 6, fell into a clay pit at Wolverhampton, the depth being 7 feet. Ward, aged 9, went in and held up the younger till help came, the elder being drowned.

On the 5th April 1915, a man in trying to recover a pole went into the Kiln Creek at Kurna, Mesopotamia, and became fast in the weeds in 9 feet of water. Ward and Evans went in but were unable to rescue him.

On the 6th May 1915, two Chinese were thrown into the East River, China, owing to the capsizing of a boat. Watling went in and got both on to the bottom of the boat whence they were picked up.

On the 4th September 1915, two men while bathing in the sea at Broadstairs got into difficulty 70 yards out in deep water. Wells swam out and rescued them one at a time.

On the 17th February 1915, a man in trying to swim to shore from a wrecked vessel at Goring got into difficulty in the rough sea. Wheeler and Hutchings swam out and between them succeeded in saving him.

On the 23rd February 1915, a man, when crossing by a plank from one of HM ships to another, was knocked overboard. Whitelocke jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 3rd August 1915, a man in a fit of insanity threw himself overboard from one of HM ships. Whitmore jumped in and kept him up till a boat reached them.

Wilkinson, W. Lance-Serg. Case 42055

On the 7th May 1915, Lance-Sergt. A.Varvel, Norfolk Regt., fell from a boat into a creek at Busra. Wilkinson at once jumped in and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 4th August 1915, a girl was washed from a boat slip into the Clyde at Inverkip, the depth being 8 feet. Williamson went in fully clothed and brought her out.

On the 7th December 1914, a fishing boat was driven ashore at Boulogne. Three of the crew reached land, the fourth, an old man of 63, being left on board. Willis swam out through the heavy sea, but was unable to save him and was himself got out in an unconscious state.

On the 2nd June 1915, a man fell overboard from a steamer on the River Tigris and was carried away by the current. Wilson and Zair both went after him but failed to reach him and were picked up half a mile down the stream.

On the 21st June 1915, owing to engine breakdown, an aeroplane on which two officers were flying fell into the sea. Wilson got the only lifebuoy carried, but on seeing his comrade, Lieut. Samson, in difficulty gave the buoy to him and thus enabled him to keep afloat till they were picked up.

On the 21st February 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the Thames at Barnes, the depth being 14 feet and the night dark. Winter went in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 29th June 1915, a boat manned by Sepoys was capsized in the Hakeka Channel of the River Euphrates. All the occupants except one, who could not swim, reached the bank. Wormleighton went in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 16th June 1915, two men were bathing in the sea at Whitley Bay and were swept out 150 yards by the current and could not return. Wright swam out and supported them till a boat reached them.

On the 26th August 1915, a man and his daughter got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Llanfairfechan. Yeoman, aged 13, went to their help and was successful in saving them.

Zalil, Muhamad A. Case 41846

On the 25th April 1915, two girls were bathing in a tank at Birbhum, India, and got into difficulty. Zalil jumped in and saved one, but failed to save the second who was drowned.
