On the 12th August 1914, a man was crossing the Tana River, East Africa, by a rope hand over hand when he let go and was swept away by the current. Adawa and Ali went in and were successful in saving him.

On the 20th February 1915, a youth named Edge fell down an old shaft at Bucknall, the distance to the water being 40 feet and the water 75 feet deep. With a rope round him Aldridge, aged 15, was lowered down, and twisting his legs round him they were drawn up.

On the 1st November 1915, a seaman was washed overboard from the SS Stanislas, in the English Channel, the weather being too rough to launch a boat. Alexander went overboard with a line and caught him, and they were then pulled on board, but the man did not recover.

On the 22nd July 1914, a boat with four men on board capsized when crossing the Maneri River, Bombay, the river being in flood and 30 feet deep. Arjun repeatedly went to the help of a comrade and eventually succeeded in saving him.

On the 27th March 1915, owing to the capsize of a boat, a man was thrown into Dundrum Bay, the night being dark and the depth 20 feet. Armstrong swam out 30 yards and brought him to land.

On the 27th May 1915, a man fell overboard from one of HM ships in harbour with a strong flood tide. Bailey jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 21st August 1915, a boy fell into a deep gulley at the foot of a cliff at Mevagissey, the depth being 12 feet. Barron slid down the steep cliff for 60 feet and going in rescued him.

On the 4th October 1915, a man accidentally fell into the Jumna at Lakwa, India, and was being carried away by the current. Basnyat went in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 7th September 1915, Patty Hickman, aged 11, was bathing in the sea at Drigg and was carried out some 300 yards holding to a lifebuoy. There was no boat to hand and after the girl had been an hour and a half in this position Miss Batt swam out and was successful in bringing her to shore.

On the 16th October 1915, a man in trying to swim across the river at Nagoman Camp, N W India, got into difficulty. Beard went in and rescued him in an unconscious state.

On the 28th December 1914, a woman was seen floating in the Wuri River, Cameroons, West Africa. Beauchamp, although he knew the river was infested with crocodiles, jumped in and rescued her.

On the 8th August 1915, a man accidentally fell into the Thames at Reading owing to the breaking of a punt-pole. Belcher, aged 15, jumped in and supported him till a boat reached them.

On the 12th August 1915, a boy accidentally fell overboard from a steamer on the Thames off Sunbury, the depth being 16 feet. Belither went after him but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 16th August 1915, Dudley Bond while bathing in the sea at Westgate was carried out some distance. Bell, who was suffering from the effects of wounds, swam out and succeeded in saving him.

On the 11th August 1914, a girl accidentally fell into the sea at Portsmouth. Bell jumped in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 16th June 1915, Sapper Cross RE fell from a pontoon bridge into the creek at Brightlingsea, the depth being 18 feet and the tide strong. Bonner and Edmunds went in and were able to bring him to land.

On the 29th November 1914, a man in trying to board the SS Nagoya, fell into the harbour at Kobe, Japan, the night being very dark. Boyle jumped in and supported him till further help came and they were got out.

On the 11th April 1915, a girl accidentally fell into the Tyne at Wallsend, the depth being 14 feet with a strong ebb tide. Brewester at once plunged in and caught her and they were got out with a rope.

On the 17th February 1915, the lifeboat capsized in the sea at Worthing, one of the men being washed away. Brockey went in and succeeded in landing him, but he did not recover.

On the 17th November 1914, a sepoy was on a barge which sank in the Shatt el Arab in Mesopotamia during a storm. Brown swam out and eventually succeeded in saving him.

On the 1st December 1915, a lad accidentally fell into the Victoria Dock, the depth being 17 feet and dark at the time. Brown, aged 15, went in and caught but was unable to hold him and he was drowned.

On the 13th May 1915, two men were in a wagon which was backed over the bank into the La Bassee Canal, France. Bruce went in and succeeded in saving both men, bringing them out one at a time.

On the 19th January 1915, a seaman accidentally fell overboard from his ship in Suva Harbour, Fiji, there being great danger from sharks. Burrows and Kemsley jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 5th November 1915, a man accidentally fell into the harbour at Portsmouth, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. Burton plunged in and caught him, and they were got out with a rope.

On the 20th August 1915, G Somerfield was accidentally knocked overboard from the SS Abrosso into the Calabar River, West Africa, there being danger from crocodiles and sharks. Cail plunged in and caught him and they were picked up by a boat.

On the 27th July 1914, six persons where thrown into the Coleroon River, Madras, owing to the capsizing of a boat, the depth being 30 feet and the current strong. Chetti jumped from his boat and assisted in getting all six on board two other boats which were put out to the rescue.

On the 20th July 1915, a man accidentally fell into the harbour at Ayr, the depth being 8 to 10 feet. Clark went in and held him till they were picked up.

On the 21st December 1914, a youth slipped and fell into the harbour at Genoa in a dangerous position between two vessels. Clayson and Denby went in and supported him till they were got out with ropes.

On the 24th December 1914, a man slipped into the dock at Grimsby between a ship and the quay, the night being dark and bitterly cold. Coe, on one of HM ships, at once went in and got a rope round him and he was pulled out.

On the 2nd December 1914, a boy fell into the the canal at Barnsley and his mother went in to try and save him but failed. Dr. Collings went in from the opposite side and rescued the woman. Again going in he brought the boy out but he did not recover.

On the 29th March 1915, a lad accidentally fell into the Aire at Castleford, the depth being 16 feet. Connell, aged 12, jumped in fully clothed and effected his rescue.

On the 2nd August 1915, a man took cramp while bathing in the sea at Blackrock. Conway, who was suffering from wounds received in action swam out and rescued him.

On the 17th July 1915, J H Bromley went into Devonport Harbour to try and save another man and was himself carried away. Cothey went in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 1st December 1914, a man accidentally stepped from a lighter 1500 yards from the shore at Sheerness, there being a strong tide and the night dark. Coughtrey jumped overboard but did not succeed in finding him.

On the 19th February 1915, a special constable from a patrol boat fell into the Tees at Middlesborough, there being a strong tide and the night dark. Coultas plunged in, but in the darkness failed to find him.

On the 18th September 1915, a man while fishing from the wharf fell into Milbay Dock, Plymouth, there being a strong tide running out. Coupland jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 27th September 1915, a man accidentally fell overboard from a lighter at Port Said, the night being very dark and the current strong. Coupland went in but failed to effect the rescue.

On the 10th July 1914, a man while bathing in a strong current at Kowloon, China, became exhausted when 300 yards from shore and called for help. Cowan swam out and with difficulty brought him to shore.

On the 14th April 1915, an insane man jumped from one of HM ships in an open harbour. Cresswell jumped in and towed him to a trawler when they were got on board, but the man was then dead.

On the 21st April 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the sea at Penzance. Curnow swam out and succeeded in saving her.

On the 29th September 1914, a man who was painting the side of a ship missed his footing and fell into the harbour at Wellington, New Zealand. Dennistoun plunged in from his ship, swam 50 to 60 yards, and rescued the man.

On the 3rd April 1915, a man fell into the Wellington Dock, Dover, the depth being 9 feet. Derrick jumped in and caught him, but as they were being pulled up the line broke four times, letting them back into the dock and they were eventually got into a boat.

On the 3rd July 1915, a man while bathing in the sea at Fort Albert, I. of W., was caught by the current and carried out 80 yards. Diaper was called from his bed and swimming out he brought the man to shore.

On the 23rd May 1915, a coolie who was demented jumped into the Irrawaddy in Upper Burma, the depth being 15 feet with a dangerous current. Din plunged in and was successful in saving him.

On the 20th November 1915, a youth fell through the ice on a pond at Dalton-in-Furness and went under the ice, the depth being 7 feet. Green, with a rope round him went in and dived under the ice, but he could not find him and was himself got out in an exhausted state.

On the 25th July 1915, a man was washed overboard from a submarine in the Mediterranean, the sea being choppy. Greene went after him and succeeded in saving him.

On the 3rd January 1915, a man, while crossing the Mathioya River, East Africa, missed his footing and was carried into deep water. Higgins went in fully clothed and got him out.

On the 21st June 1915, a man fell overboard from a barge into a canal in France, the depth being 14 feet and the water very foul. Higgins went in and succeeded in getting him back to the barge, where he was pulled back on board.

On the 26th July 1915, a boy while bathing was carried out into deep water in the sea at Southsea. Hildred, who was suffering from wounds, having lost an eye in action, swam out and was successful in saving him.

On the 25th April 1915, an old man of 60 fell into the Tyne at Jarrow, the depth being 30 feet. Hiley jumped in from the ferry boat and held him till they were picked up.

On the 9th August 1915, a woman accidentally fell into the canal at La Bassee and was seen struggling in deep water. Hopkins went in and succeeded in bringing her out.

On the 25th May 1915, HMS Triumph was sunk at Gaba Tepe and a seaman named Wall was seen to be in difficulty in the sea. Hully jumped in from another ship and supported him till both were picked up.

On the 21st April 1915, a man threw himself into the Mersey at Warrington, the depth being 10 to 12 feet and very treacherous. Jackson plunged in, but being clutched was unable to save him.

On the 18th March 1915, a man when returning to his ship fell into the Dock Lock at Avonmouth, the night being dark. Jacobs went in and found him, but on being pulled up he fell back into the Lock, and Jacobs could not find him a second time.

On the 8th July 1915, Ruby McIntyre while bathing in the sea at Kinghorn was swept out 30 yards into 10 feet of water, the sea being rough. Kyle swam out and succeeded in bringing her to shore.

On the 12th November 1915, a man of the RMLI fell overboard from one of HM ships in a dangerous position between the vessel and the quay, the night being very dark. Leary went in and caught him, and they were then got on board with ropes.

On the 8th July 1915, two men were bathing in the Lys River, France, and got into difficulty in 12 feet of water. Leggett and Chambers went in and succeeded in saving them.

On the 18th November 1915, a man fell overboard from a launch in Stangate Creek, River Medway. Legh and Powell went in and got him to a mooring buoy, where they held him till a boat picked them up.

On the 16th November 1914, a man fell in between one of HM ships and the jetty at Gorleston the depth being 15 feet, the tide strong and the night dark. Leviton jumped in but was unable to get a rope round him before he sank.

On the 4th March 1915, a man who was being taken out of a ship fell overboard from a boat in Mostyn Deeps Estuary of the Dee. Levitt jumped in from the boat and gave him an oar, but could do no more and he was drowned.

On the 7th January 1915, a woman while bathing in the sea at Hermanus, Cape Colony, was swept out 40 to 50 yards, the sea being very rough. Luyt, ages 15, swam out and succeeded in bringing her to land.

On the 29th April 1915, a man named McPhail fell from the quay into the Clyde at Glasgow, the depth being 14 feet and the water foul. MacDonald jumped in and caught him and they were got out with a rope.

On the 3rd December 1914, Corpl.Forsyth, The Royal Scots, fell into the dock at Leith, the night being dark and stormy. Mackenzie plunged in and held him up till they were got out with ropes.

On the 7th April 1914, a boy accidentally fell into a well at Shahjahanpur, the depth being 13 feet. Makka jumped in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 15th October 1915, a man in the darkness and thick fog walked into the Milwall Dock, the water being foul and 24 feet deep. Maloney jumped in from his ship and swam about for some time, but failed to find him.

On the 1st August 1915, a man and a boy were bathing in the sea at Boulogne and got out of their depth. The boy was saved without any risk, but the man was carried out 150 yards. Mason swam out and brought him to shore, but he did not recover.

On the 1st May 1915, a man trying to board the picket-boat from one of HM ships fell into the Firth of Forth. McGrath at once jumped after him and supported him till they were picked up.

On the 6th February 1915, a vessel was driven onto the rocks at Peterhead bottom up, when it was found that a man was inside. McRobbie and Baird, at the risk of being swept away, went to the wreck and cutting through the plates got the man out.

On the 4th August 1915, a boat with four persons on board was capsized on the Gareloch off Clynder. Monteith succeeded in supporting the two younger until a boat reached them, the other being drowned.

On the 22nd October 1914, fitter Reeves, of the ASC, fell into the canal at St Omer, France, the night being very dark. Pte. S Shaw went in to his help but got into difficulty. Morris and Aldred then went in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 7th July 1915, a man while bathing in rough sea at Seabrook got into difficulty in 15 feet of water 20 yards out. Nixon swam out and caught him but was unable to bring him to shore and he was drowned.

On the 7th April 1915, while a convoy was crossing the Gomal River, N W India, one of the men was swept away, the river being in high flood. Nur went in and succeeded in bringing him to the bank.

On the 11th February 1915, owing to the breaking of a spar while bridge building, a man was thrown into the river at Newbridge, Somerset. Parry-Jones plunged in fully clothed and succeeded in saving him.

On the 16th March 1915, a man fell overboard from one of HM ships in an open harbour. Paterson jumped in and kept him afloat till they were picked up, but the man did not recover.

On the 8th April 1915, James Evans was accidentally knocked overboard from one of HM ships at sea. Pearson jumped in to his help and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 9th April 1915, a man accidentally fell when climbing on board one of HM ships in open harbour. Perry jumped in and brought him to the ship's side and they were got on board.

On the 15th May 1915, a man in an attempt at suicide threw himself overboard from a launch in Bombay Harbour, the sea being rough. Reeves and Bocha both went in but owing to the heavy sea failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 29th October 1914, a woman fell into the Seine at Rouen, there being a strong current running. Rider went in and supported her till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 9th October 1915, an old man walked into the harbour at Eyemouth in the darkness, there being no lights and raining hard. Robertson plunged in and caught him, and they were got out with a rope.

On the 19th April 1915, owing to the capsizing of a boat five men were thrown into Church Bay, Rathin Island. Robinson and Pratt rescued one man and attempted to save a second, who was drowned.

On the 18th November 1915, a man fell into the dock at Liverpool in a dangerous position between a ship and the quay. Rogers went in and with difficulty got a rope round him and he was hauled on board a lighter.

On the 1st November 1915, a man accidentally fell into the dock at Goole, the night being very dark. Rose went in but failed to find him, and he was drowned.

On the 26th March 1915, a boy fell from from some piles into the harbour at Newlyn. Rowles plunged in and caught him, and they were then got on board a fishing boat.

On the 18th August 1915, three young women were bathing in the sea at Seapoint, Co. Dublin, and got into deep water. Ryan, aged 14, went in twice and got two of them out, and going in a third time tried to save the remaining one but failed.

On the 22nd January 1915, a man threw himself into the harbour at Fiji, the night being dark. Well knowing that sharks frequent the harbour, Saula jumped in and supported him till a boat reached them.

On the 10th August 1915, Violet and Harold Houghton were bathing in the sea at Abbotsham and got into a gully in a dangerous position. The Rev. Sealy went in and at great risk rescued the girl but failed in his attempt to save the boy.

On the 2nd April 1915, owing to the capsizing of a boat, a man was thrown into the Ouse at York, the depth being 20 feet. Seargent jumped in and rescued him.

On the 20th September 1915, a man accidentally fell from a launch into the harbour at Queenstown, the sea being choppy. Shaw jumped in from the launch and kept him afloat till they were picked up by a boat.

On the 6th February 1915, a man accidentally fell overboard from HMHS Gascon in Southampton Water, the weather being rough. Simmons and Street at once went after him and got him back to the gangway where they were got on board.

On the 16th May 1915, a man fell from a raft while crossing the Kerkhah River, Persia, the depth being 15 feet and the current strong. Singh swam out and held him up till a boat reached them.

On the 16th July 1915, several persons were bathing in the Suez Canal near Port Said when two of them got into difficulty. Singh went in and saved one of them and attempted to save the other but failed.

On the 19th February 1915, a man fell into the Princess Dock, Glasgow, the night being dark and cold. Smedley jumped in from his ship and succeeded in saving him.

On the 20th February 1915, owing to the slipping of a wire rope a man was thrown from the Forth Bridge into the river below. Smith jumped from the bridge, a height of 40 feet, and caught him, but when got on board a launch he did not recover.

On the 31st December 1914, a girl fell into the Stour at Cradley Heath, the water at the place being held up by a culvert. Smith went in and managed to get the girl out, but was himself sucked into the culvert and carried through a distance of some 50 yards.

On the 24th July 1915, a man while bathing in the sea at Hong Kong was carried out half a mile from shore clinging to a boat's grating. Spillane swam out and succeeded in saving him.

On the 2nd March 1915, a pinnace was run down by a torpedo boat in the Gulf of Salamis throwing all on board into the water. Stanton supported one man until they were picked up by the boats from some ships near.

On the 12th February 1915, 5 men were in a boat which was capsized by a sudden squall and sank off the coast of Nevis, W.I. One man swam away and reached land. Stapleton got the other three men on a plank and after a swim of ten hours succeeded in landing them.

On the 28th March 1915, two men fell overboard from a submarine at the mouth of the Tyne, the tide being very strong. Stephenson and Farrell went overboard from one of HM ships and saved one man, the other being drowned.

On the 1st January 1915, a man in trying to land from a boat at Lyme Regis fell down and was being carried out to sea. Stockley went in and succeeded in bringing him to land.

On the 24th May 1915, Pte. Thomas McHugh fell into a resevoir at Dearnley. Stone, who could only use one hand, went in and rescued him.

On the 12th April 1915, a boy fell into the Thames at Mortlake, the depth being 10 feet and the tide strong. Street jumped in and held him up till further help came and they were got out.

On the 3rd May 1915, a man got into difficulty while bathing in the Lohit River, India. Suba went in and succeeded in bringing him out.

On the 14th December 1914, a man in the darkness walked into the harbour at Kirkwall, the depth being 20 feet and the sea choppy. Sutherland plunged in from a steamer and effected his rescue.

On the 11th May 1915, a man fell overboard from a steamer in the harbour at Fishguard, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. Swan jumped in and held him till a boat reached them.

On the 27th February 1915, a man fell into the Liffey at Dublin, between a steamer and the quay, the depth being 36 feet. Knowing the risk of being crushed, Sweeney jumped in and effected his rescue.

On the 15th May 1915, a child fell into the harbour at Stonehouse, the depth being 10 to 12 feet. Taylor, aged 12, jumped in and kept him up till they were got out with a rope.

On the 15th January 1915, a man was accidentally knocked overboard from a barge into the dock at Bootle, there being a gale blowing at the time. Thomas jumped in, but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 20th August 1915, a man of the R.E. accidentally fell from a transport into the sea at Havre. Thomas jumped in and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

At 5.30 p.m. on the 10th October 1915, 2nd Lieut. E R King, Warwickshire Regt., in trying to climb the cliff at Swanage got into a position from which he could not move. Thomas volunteered to be lowered over the cliff by a frail rope and after six hours' work succeeded in reaching him, the rescue being effected at 4 a.m. on the morning of October 11th.

On the 9th September 1915, a man while bathing in the sea at Skegness was carried out a third of a mile by the strong current. Thomason swam out and kept him afloat till a boat reached them.

On the 2nd March 1915, three men went into the harbour at Kirkwall to help another man got into difficulty in 16 feet of water. Thomson went in and got them out one at a time.

On the 12th August 1915, Owen Scully, aged 9, fell into the Thames at Chelsea, the depth being 8 feet. Thompson, aged 12, plunged in and succeeded in saving him.

On the 2nd August 1915, a man accidentally fell overboard from a monitor at sea. Thornton at once jumped in but failed to reach him before he sank.

On the 26th June 1915, an insane man threw himself into the Clyde at Glasgow, the depth being 27 feet. Tilley jumped in and supported him for fifteen minutes, when a boat reached them.

On the 8th February 1915, a sapper of the RE in trying to recover a pontoon which had broken away, fell into the Trent at Newark, the river being in flood and 20 feet deep. Tolworthy jumped in from a boat and held him till they were picked up.

On the 7th August 1915, a boy accidentally fell into the Tyne at North Shields and was being carried away by the tide. Turner went in fully clothed and was successful in saving him.

On the 22nd June 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the river at Yarmouth, the depth being 16 feet, and the night dark. Turrell went in and took her to a boat where she was got on board.

On the 20th November 1915, Beatrice Turvey fell into the Aire at Castleford during a dense fog. Her sister, Hilda Turvey, swam to her help and succeeded in saving her.

On the 7th April 1915, a man fell from the gangway into the dock at Tilbury, the depth being 30 feet and the night dark. Ulyatt jumped in and got him to the dock wall, where they were pulled out.

On the 11th August 1915, Pte. Bentley, Yorkshire Regt., while bathing in the Tees at Darlington got into difficulty in 15 feet of water. Uzzell plunged in and got him out, but he did not recover.

On the 26th December 1914, the lifeboat which had put out to the wreck of a trawler at Peterhead was dashed on the rocks, all the crew being thrown into the sea, which was running high. Wales plunged into the surf and caught one man, but the sea tore him away and he was drowned.

On the 13th November 1914, a soldier fell in between one of HM ships and a transport at Suez, the space between the vessels being 2 feet, the wind being high and the sea rough. Walls at the risk of being crushed went down but did not find him.

On the 18th July 1915, two children, aged 4 and 6, fell into a clay pit at Wolverhampton, the depth being 7 feet. Ward, aged 9, went in and held up the younger till help came, the elder being drowned.

On the 5th April 1915, a man in trying to recover a pole went into the Kiln Creek at Kurna, Mesopotamia, and became fast in the weeds in 9 feet of water. Ward and Evans went in but were unable to rescue him.

On the 6th May 1915, two Chinese were thrown into the East River, China, owing to the capsizing of a boat. Watling went in and got both on to the bottom of the boat whence they were picked up.

On the 4th September 1915, two men while bathing in the sea at Broadstairs got into difficulty 70 yards out in deep water. Wells swam out and rescued them one at a time.

On the 17th February 1915, a man in trying to swim to shore from a wrecked vessel at Goring got into difficulty in the rough sea. Wheeler and Hutchings swam out and between them succeeded in saving him.

On the 23rd February 1915, a man, when crossing by a plank from one of HM ships to another, was knocked overboard. Whitelocke jumped in and was successful in saving him.

On the 3rd August 1915, a man in a fit of insanity threw himself overboard from one of HM ships. Whitmore jumped in and kept him up till a boat reached them.

On the 7th May 1915, Lance-Sergt. A.Varvel, Norfolk Regt., fell from a boat into a creek at Busra. Wilkinson at once jumped in and with difficulty succeeded in saving him.

On the 4th August 1915, a girl was washed from a boat slip into the Clyde at Inverkip, the depth being 8 feet. Williamson went in fully clothed and brought her out.

On the 7th December 1914, a fishing boat was driven ashore at Boulogne. Three of the crew reached land, the fourth, an old man of 63, being left on board. Willis swam out through the heavy sea, but was unable to save him and was himself got out in an unconscious state.

On the 2nd June 1915, a man fell overboard from a steamer on the River Tigris and was carried away by the current. Wilson and Zair both went after him but failed to reach him and were picked up half a mile down the stream.

On the 21st June 1915, owing to engine breakdown, an aeroplane on which two officers were flying fell into the sea. Wilson got the only lifebuoy carried, but on seeing his comrade, Lieut. Samson, in difficulty gave the buoy to him and thus enabled him to keep afloat till they were picked up.

On the 21st February 1915, a woman in an attempt at suicide threw herself into the Thames at Barnes, the depth being 14 feet and the night dark. Winter went in and succeeded in saving her.

On the 29th June 1915, a boat manned by Sepoys was capsized in the Hakeka Channel of the River Euphrates. All the occupants except one, who could not swim, reached the bank. Wormleighton went in and kept him afloat till they were picked up.

On the 16th June 1915, two men were bathing in the sea at Whitley Bay and were swept out 150 yards by the current and could not return. Wright swam out and supported them till a boat reached them.

On the 26th August 1915, a man and his daughter got into difficulty while bathing in the sea at Llanfairfechan. Yeoman, aged 13, went to their help and was successful in saving them.

On the 25th April 1915, two girls were bathing in a tank at Birbhum, India, and got into difficulty. Zalil jumped in and saved one, but failed to save the second who was drowned.
